SECTION A: COMPREHENSION QUESTION 1: READING FOR MEANING AND UNDERSTANDING TEXT A 1.1 He is defiant because he did not run away from the tsunami but challenged it. (2) 1.2 The words bemused and embarrassed are effective as it emphasizes that he was not comfortable with all the attention he was getting. (2) 1.3 Oshima was once idu\yllic, in other words it was like a paradise, and a perfect place to live or to go on holiday; however, the tsunami destroyed everything and ruined the appearance of the place. (2) 1.4 He challenged the tsunami and steered his boat towards it, while other people were running for the hills. (1) 1.5 The learner should agree with this statement, these paragraphs show how two people sacrificed everything in order to assist the villagers. Susumu offered his boat to transport people at little or no cost, while Tadaomi gave away all the food in his supermarket to the victims of the tsunami. (3) 1.6 The writer s intention is to inform people of events that occurred after the tsunami and also to pay tribute to these two brave men. (2) TEXT B 1.7 One plate moves under another in the sea, leading to pressure. When one of these sections give way, an earthquake occurs and water is displaced, which leads to a tsunami. (3) 1.8 If the earthquake does not affect the surface, in other words it occurs deep within the earth s crust, and the plate does not snap back, there would not be a tsunami. (2) 1.9 These countries are located around fault lines, where the different plates that make up the earth s crust meet. Friction is caused when these plates move against each other, leading to earthquakes. (2) TEXT A and TEXT B 1.10 Passage A: the audience would be newspaper readers, as it contains current news. Passage B: the audience would be scholars of Geography, who have the necessary knowledge to interpret the diagramns. (4) Copyright reserved Page 2 of 6

TEXT A and TEXT C 1.11 TEXT A: the tone is neutral, giving an objective view of events TEXT C: the tone is subjective, giving a personal account of events. (4) 1.12 The style of these two passages differs vastly. Text A is more informative and therefore makes little use of adjectives and feeling words. TEXT C contains more adjectives and gives a personal response. The style of each passage is effective for its intended audience. Text A is aimed at newspaper readers while TECT C is for personal use. (USE DISCRETION WHEN MARKING THIS QUESTION MAKE SURE THE LEARNER IS LOOKING AT STYLE>) (3) TOTAL SECTION A: 30 Copyright reserved Page 3 of 6

SECTION B: SUMMARY QUESTION 2: SUMMARY Marking memorandum/marking the summary: Candidates must present the summary in the required format. o Summaries presented in the incorrect format will not be assessed. o If the learner has presented both advantages and disadvantages, deduct half the marks awarded. Award marks only for those points that are presented in full sentences. Planning/drafts must be clearly indicated. If not, mark the first summary presented. Candidates must indicate the word count correctly. Award marks as follows: 7 marks for 7 points 3 marks for language Penalties: o For summaries that are too long, read only up to 5 words beyond the required length and ignore the rest of the answer. o Summaries that are short but contain all the required main points should not be penalised. o Language errors (grammar, spelling, punctuation): deduct from the 3 marks for language as follows: 0-4 errors no penalty 5-10 errors subtract 1 mark errors subtract 2 marks 16 errors or more subtract 3 marks. o For direct quotations of whole sentences, penalise as follows from the total mark awarded for the points and language usage: 1-3 whole sentences quoted: no penalty 4-5 whole sentences quoted: deduct 1 mark 6-7 whole sentences quoted: deduct 2 marks o Subtract 1 mark from the total marks awarded for the points and language usage for not indicating the word count, or for an incorrect word count. NOTE: Abbreviations should not be used but should they appear in the summary, they must be counted as the number of words that they represent. TOTAL SECTION B: [10] Copyright reserved Page 4 of 6

SECTION C: LANGUAGE IN CONTEXT QUESTION 3: ANALYSING ADVERTISING TEXT E: MTN 3.1 The intention is to advise people that they need to be RICA d. (1) 3.2 The word stay emphasizes the importance of being RICA d. as cell phones would be disconnected if they are not RICA d. (2) 3.3 The diction in this advertisement is related to the services offered on cell phones, e.g. ing, chat, bundles. Words like poke and liking refer to Facebook, which is also available on many cell phones. These are services that allow us to communicate and stay in touch with other people, i.e. stay connected. (3) 3.4 ALLOW personal response. No mark is awarded for the Yes/No. Marks are only awarded for the reasons given. Learners may say No, because it seems cluttered, thereby confusing the reader. They may also say Yes, because it lists all the services that are offered in a cluttered way to emphasis how many advantages cell phones offer and how losing that connection could cut you off from your friends and family. (3) TEXT F: DSTV 3.5 In sport there are always at least two teams that are competing against each other, and the viewer has to take sides. On DSTV, programmes are also set against each other when they are shown at the same time. For this reason it is effective that the Proteas are set against Kim and Kourtney, as they might be shown at the same time. (3) 4.6 The need to be able to watch two programmes that are shown at the same time, is addressed in this advertisement, by showing the viewer that they can record one programme while watching another. (2) TOTAL QUESTION 3: [14] Copyright reserved Page 5 of 6

QUESTION 4: UNDERSTANFING OTHER ASPECTS OF THE MEDIA TEXT G: CARTOON 4.1 The word tic is repeated. (1) 4.2 The car had to brake quickly to avoid an accident. (2) 4.3 The cartoon is satirical because it uses humour to convey a serious message. The cartoon emphasises the dangers involved in using your cell phone while driving. (3) TOTAL QUESTION 4 [6] QUESTION 5: TEXTUAL EDITING TEXT H 5.1 It shows it is the title of the person. (1) 5.2 B possessive adjective.(accept letter or word.)
