We use this expression to show we don't believe something, or to show we think something is a big surprise to us. You ca use this phrase i la guage. Spoken Informal Example 1 A: I saw Chuck Norris in the city centre this morning. In fact I had a coffee with him. B: With Chuck Norris! Give over! Example 2 A: In some countries it's normal to get married at thirteen. B: At thirteen! Give over! 1

3 Czenglish WRONG: RIGHT: Am I going to the party? I think yes. Am I going to the party? I think so. Yes and no are probably the first words you learn in English. Are you going to the party? Yes. Are you going to the party? No. But as your English develops a little, your sentence constructions expand to more than just one word answers. But whereas in Czech, you might answer the question, Are you goi g to the party? ith I thi k yes, i E glish it is ro g. I stead you eed to say I thi k so. To say the opposite - if you do t thi k that you ill go, you ha e to say, I do t thi k so. Sayi g, I thi k yes or I thi k o is Cze glish, and you should cut it out right away! 3

4 English at Work Useful Expressions for the Festive Season With the festive season upon us, let s look at some English expressions which are useful for saying how you feel. 1. I m absolutely... to bits to be Invited to the boss s Christmas party. I ve never been asked before. 2. My colleagues and I have been in... spirits since we were told about our end of year bonuses. 3. I m as pleased as... with the division s annual result. This will be reflected in your bonuses. 1.
