1 DSP-1611 DIPLOMA IN SECRETARIAL PRACTICE SEMESTER I COMMUNICATIVE ENGLISH AND PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT Max. Marks:100 DURATION:3HRS MODEL QUESTION PAPER PART A I Answer any five of the following in two or three sentences. 1. What is special about the Pine Forest? 2. What was Mr. Oliver s attitude towards the boy? 3. A vision, long cherished materializes. What was the vision? 4. What was Nehru s pledge to the nations and peoples of the world? 5. Why do we celebrate Teachers Day? 6. Comment on the works of Dr. S Radhakrishnan. 7. What difference do we find between slow and fast reading? (5x2=10) II Answer any three questions from the following in about 50 words. 1. What would have happened if you were in Mr. Oliver s place? 2. Write in your diary about what had happened In the pine forest 3. Whom did Nehru want his people to remember of the great day of India s freedom? 4. Freedom brings us responsibilities and burdens, Discuss on the basis of The Appointed Day. 5. How did the broad mindedness of his parents help Dr. S. Radhakrishnan to acquire the best qualities required for becoming a great man? 6. How does critical reading make the task more enjoyable? 7. How do we choose the different methods of reading for different purposes? (5x5=25) III Construct meaningful sentences using the words given below. 1. Oversight 2. reverence 3. prejudice 4. outskirts 5. temptation (1x5=5) IV Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow. The newspapers have taken the place of the Gita, the Bible and the Quran witht the people. For them, the printed sheet is gospel truth. The fact throws a great responsibility on the editors and newswriters. Newspapers are a powerful influence. It is the duty of the editors to see that no false report or report likely to excite the public is published in their newspapers. The editors and their assistants
2 have to be extra careful about the news they give and the manner in which they dress it. In a state of independence, it is practically impossible for Governments to control the Press. It is the duty of the public to keep them on the right path. An enlightened public would refuse to patronise inflammatory and indecent newspapers. Newspapers which indulge in untruth or exaggeration harm the cause they profess to espouse. I admit that there is enough untruth in enough newspapers to warrant action. But my experience is that no amount of public criticism will affect the policy of newspapers which make their livelihood by such policy. But I write this in no way to condone untruths in newspapers. I am quite clear that if newspapers weighed every word that is printed therein, we should have a speedier removal of abuses whether in the States or elsewhere. 1. Whose place have the newspapers taken? 2. What is gospel truth for people? 3. What throws a great responsibility on editors and news writers? 4. What is the duty of the editors? 5. How far is it possible for the government to control the press? 6. What is the duty of the public? 7. How do newspapers harm their own cause? 8. How can we have a speedier removal of abuses? 9. Find words that have similar meaning from the passage. a. Provocative b. disregard 10. Give a suitable title to the passage. (1 x 10 = 10) PART B V Construct a readable story from the given outline. A miser loses a purse of a hundred pieces of gold in great distress goes to the Town Announcement Section - the announcer makes him offer a reward of 10 gold pieces A few days later a farmer finds the purse returns to the miser counts the money the farmer asks for the reward miser says there were 110 pieces in the purse and the farmer has already taken his reward they quarrel brings to the court the judge hears the case takes the purse and count the money it holds 100 pieces decides it cannot be the miser s purse so gives the purse to farmer the miser had over reached himself. (5) VI Read the following passage and give a note (five points) on the important points discussed. With the changing times come revolutionary changes in the tastes, styles and priorities of people. The teenagers of today are not what they used to be a few decades ago. They have more freedom and options to lead their own lives than ever before. They have more diversions and choices to spend their free time. The recent survey conducted by the Weekly Magazine clearly indicates that T.V is the biggest attraction for the teenagers. Boys spend 40% and girls spend 50% of their free time watching television programmes.
3 Sports programmes are the favourite of the boys. The girls prefer watching movies, songs and serials on T.V. Playing indoor and outdoor games is the favourite pastime of 30% boys. Only 5% girls spend their free time on games. More girls read Comics and General Knowledge Books than the boys. Girls spend 5% more of their free time talking to their friends than the boys. Very few teenagers pursue a constructive recreational activity or a hobby. Girls, unfortunately, don t spend enough time on sports and games. This doesn t augur well for the harmonious development of their personalities (5) VII Complete the given conversation. Gopal: Reghu, I am so happy that our exam ends today. Reghu: Yes Gopal,.. Gopal: I am going home tomorrow. I shall vacate the hostel next week. Reghu: Why should you pay for another week? Gopal: My father. What about you? Reghu: My uncle is on his way home. So he has promised to.. Gopal: How do you think about the results? Reghu:. Any way I will have to find a job first. Gopal: Reghu: See you later at the farewell party.
