1 NEWS FROM THE WOOD LAKEWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL ACADEMICS AT LAKEWOOD SPANISH CLASS By: Grace Trago-Richards In Spanish class, we recently took one of the biggest tests of the year, our mid-term. A mid-term by definition is an exam in the middle of an academic term. The mid-term had us watch a commercial, do a speaking activity, and compare and contrast Christmas here in America, and Christmas in Chile. We can tell you for a fact that Christmas in Chile is way different than Christmas in America. In Chile, they open their Christmas presents at 12:00 AM. However in America, we open our presents when we wake up on Christmas Day, or at least most of us do. Also, the weather is a big difference. It s cold and snowy here in most parts of North America, and in Chile, they are still able to swim do to the fact that Chile is below the Equator. The idea of taking midterms was intimidating at first, but once we completed the tests we realized that it was pretty easy. So, next time you have a big test you may not want to do, just remember, it s okay and you can do it!. STUDY TABLES By: Alyson Wonser & Ashley Poling Have you been struggling in your school work? Do you need extra help? Then you should consider going to LMS s study tables. They re after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week. They run from 2:30 to 3:30. Computers will be available. DUB By: Abigayle Thompson In history class with Mrs. Warthen we are learning about the great awakening and the enlightenment. We have done vocab words, watched videos, answered questions, read from the text, and heard lectures from Mrs.Warthen herself. The lectures are what I think are a key part in us learning the material. These lectures, rather than us just reading from a book and writing what s on the page, allows us to become engaged in the subject. We learn from the lectures very well because she teaches them with enthusiasm and emotions. It is like you are living during that time. These lectures are something that forces you to pay attention and follow along because she will not repeat the material and so you need to pay attention to get the right things written down. We talked with a student from different Social Studies class, Luke Snidach. We asked him a couple of questions. The first question we asked is What are you currently learning and working on right now? He replied by saying We just finished a project. The next question we asked was What did you do in the project? He replied by saying We had to make a slide presentation and it had to have at least six slides of information. We worked in groups of three. We then asked What did you guys do previously before the project? He replied Not to long ago we took a test. When we asked what information he was tested on, he replied...i believe it was on the causes of the American Revolution. LIFESTYLE BOOK TALK By: Shalee Lasure Today I am going to be telling you about a book you should read by the title of Windfall written by Jennifer E. Smith. In this book she writes about a character, who s name is Ali, and her two best friends Teddy and Leo. (Ali is in love with Teddy.) When she was younger her parents died and, she had to move in with her aunt, uncle and cousin Leo. Now, in the present, she is heads to Teddy s house with a lottery ticket in hand for his birthday. What is just a harmless lottery ticket now, will soon be 14.3 million dollars! No one knows that that harmless ticket will change everything. I believe this is one of the best books that I have read in my lifetime. It is realistic fiction and if you are into romance books it has some of that too. Ages that could read this are 10 and up. MOVIE THEATERS By: Aniya Kovach, Cameron Taylor, Alexis New Everyone knows about Netflix, seeing how in today's generation it seems we are always streaming. But of course everything has consequences and the one in this situation is a large drop in box office sales. Movie theaters have decided to put in new things to bring back the hype in the theaters. Recently our local theater installed recliner chairs in all of the viewing rooms. Some other theatres have put in bars and electronic ticket dispensers. But the streaming services TIDE PODS By: Alexis New, Aniya Kovach, Juli Dewitt, Cameron Taylor, Shaleah Wardrip Already almost 100 people have called poison control due consumption of Tide Pods through the Tide Pod challenge which has become a trend from the start of Though the bag says obviously on it not to consume it, people still are. The trend has taken off mostly from Youtube and Instagram. Youtube has started cracking down on the videos, removing them due to the dangerous nature. Health experts are saying that people need to take the risks of this challenge very seriously, This is what started out as a joke on the Internet and now it s just gone too far, Ann Marie Buerkle, with the Consumer Product Safety Commission told CBS News. The P&G CEO is actively working to figure out how to shut this challenge down. Until then, please listen to the warnings. This is no laughing matter and could seriously harm you. MUZZLELOADER SEASON By: Kiara Riley & Chase Inman It s 2018 and deer season is coming around. A Muzzleloader is a front loading rifle, uses gunpowder a musket ball or you can insert one bullet. If you missed Muzzleloader season in 2017, don t worry. The coming winter in 2018 will come around and Muzzleloader season will be back. The dates are December fifth and thirty first. That is if you own Private Land. State Land however, is Dec. 15th - Dec 18th. The bag limit for Private Land is one either sex and one antlerless. HIGHLIGHTS SLEEP- HOW CAN IT AFFECT YOUR HEALTH? By: Hailie Perkins We all love it, sleep, we think it is the most amazing thing ever! But have you ever asked yourself, How can sleep affect my health? Well you came to the right place! Today, I will be telling you interesting facts about and how sleep can affect your health. Poor sleep equals big consequences. I know what you re thinking, How in the world can sleep give me bad things!? and let me tell you it can give you bad conditions. For example, according to researchers at Harvard University, bad sleep can lead to weight gain, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, immune functions, and your simple common cold SAFETY IN WINTER WEATHER By: Coralyn Sager There are a few things that will keep you safe from cold weather and holiday theft. First is frostbite, its when your fingers or other parts of the body get cold, hard, numb, and pale. These places include fingers, toes, ears, and the tip of your nose. If you feel this way then go inside and run cold water. Put your fingers under the water until you have feeling again. Then turn on warm water and repeat. Then you should regain feeling, in extreme cases you can have your frostbitten body part amputated because it can't be saved. There was theft over the holidays, packages left on porches and even the Amazon cam which was proved Lack of sleep can cause early death by 12%. Crazy as it may sound, it is very ture. According to a review of 16 studies, if you do not get your 6 to 8 or 8 to 10 hours of sleep it can cause a increase of 12% of early death. Yikes! Better stop having movie nights on school weeks! Your sleep can affect your central nerve system. Your central nerve system is like the highway of your body since it sends information to you to do the most basic things. Anyways, when you don t get enough sleep a mental illness comes into place called Chronic Insomnia. Now you may ask How does this have to do with the subject of sleep? Well according to Healthline.com, During sleep, pathways form between nerve cells (neurons) in your brain that help you remember new information you ve learned develop. Sleep deprivation leaves your brain exhausted, so it can t perform the most basic things as well. You may also find it harder to concentrate or learn new things. There is actually a good side about sleep- Don t get me wrong I didn t say I hated sleeping I was saying these facts just to warn you about if you don t get enough sleep. Now I am going to tell you about some good things about sleep according to Health.com Sleep can actually improve your memory, curb information, spur creativity, especially improve your grades, sharpen attention (or you pay attention more.), have a healthy weight, lower stress, avoid accidents ( e.g. car accidents especially high schoolers and adults out there.) and steer clear of depression (or sleep helps you stay away from depression.) 4 hackable. The safest way to do this is to request the package on a day you will be home. Other thefts include break-ins while you re away. The best thing you can do is install security cameras, leave a few lights on and lock up all valuables with only one key that stays with you. Also avoid going into dark allies and any places that raise suspicion as precaution. You can never play it too safe in unfamiliar places also travel in groups late at night. It s like fish, safety in numbers. If you happen to be caught alone in a suspicious place and dark the just try to walk faster without drawing attention to yourself. Stay on main roads. I hope these tips are very helpful during this winter season. ENTERTAINMENT BAKING COOKIES By: Autumn Blakenship Ingredients : 3 cups all-purpose flour, 3/4 teaspoon baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1 cup unsalted butter, softened, 1 cup sugar, 1 egg, beaten, 1 tablespoon milk, Powdered sugar, for rolling out. Directions: Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. Place butter and sugar in large bowl of electric stand mixer and beat until light in color. Add egg and milk and beat to combine. Put mixer on low speed, gradually add flour, and beat until mixture pulls away from the side of the bowl. Divide the dough in half, wrap in waxed paper, and refrigerate for 2 hours. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Sprinkle surface where you will roll out dough with powdered sugar. Remove 1 wrapped pack of dough from refrigerator at a time, sprinkle rolling pin with powdered sugar, and roll out dough to 1/4-inch thick. Move the dough around and check underneath frequently to make sure it is not sticking. If dough has warmed during rolling, place cold cookie sheet on top for 10 minutes to chill. Cut into desired shape, place at least 1-inch apart on greased baking sheet, parchment, or silicone baking mat, and bake for 7 to 9 minutes or until cookies are just beginning to turn brown around the edges, rotating cookie sheet halfway through baking time. Let sit on baking sheet for 2 minutes after removal from oven and then move to complete cooling on wire rack. Serve as is or ice as desired. Store in airtight container for up to 1 week.
