Cookie Contest Results Well that was some amazing baking for the people who entered in the cookie contest. And we have our three winners. In first place we have... Elaine Andrews with her delicious pumpkin pie cookies. Great job Elaine. In second place we have... Kylie Kolacki with her unique jolly rancher cookies. In third we have... Julia Elmosa with her cool decorating sugar cookies. Good job to everyone who entered, if you didn t win, try again next year. If you want to see their recipes or ingredients, then keep on reading... Kylie Kolacki Preparation Time: 30 minutes Start to Finish Time: 60 minutes Yield: 3 to 4 dozen Ingredients: 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 tablespoon molasses 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 egg, 2 cups flour, 1/4 teaspoon kosher or sea salt 3/4 teaspoon baking powder, 20 hard candies (such as Jolly Ranchers or LifeSavers), Elaine Andrews fluffy whipped white frosting - salted Carmel frosting - food coloring - sugar cookie mix (2 bags) - and love for baking!! Directions: Heat oven to 375. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, cream together butter and sugars until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Add molasses and vanilla extract. Add egg and mix until light and smooth, about 1 minute on medium speed. Sift flour, salt, and baking powder over mixture; then, using a rubber spatula, fold dry ingredients into mixture. Use electric mixer to blend just until flour is incorporated. Divide dough in half and flatten into two disks. Wrap one disk in waxed paper and refrigerate while you work with the other disk. Place disk between two large sheets of waxed paper and roll to 1/4-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut dough into desired shapes, such as stars, snowflakes, diamonds, or circles. Transfer cookies to prepared baking sheets, about 1/2 inch apart. Using a smaller cookie cutter or a knife, cut shapes into the centers of cookies, reserving these center bits to add into extra dough. Remove any wrappers on candies and separate them by color into plastic bags. Using a mallet of the side of a rolling pin, crush candies. Use a spoon to sprinkle the crushed candy into the hollowed out centers of the cookies, filling to the edges. You can mix colors for a mottled effect. If cookies will be hung as ornaments or decorations, poke a small hole in the top of each cookie before baking. (Once cookies have cooled, thread string or festive ribbons through holes.) Bake 9 to 10 minutes. The candy should be melted and bubbling and the cookies just beginning to brown and firm to the touch. Remove baking sheets from ovens and place on wire racks to cool. Allow cookies to cool on pans at least 10 minutes; otherwise, the candy centers may separate from the dough. When cookies are completely cooled, remove and store in an airtight container. Julia Elmosa Ingredients: 3/4 cup butter, 1 cup sugar, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 2-3/4 cup flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt, frosting and sprinkles Directions: In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla; mix well. Combine the flour, baking power and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture and mixed well.chill for 1 hour or until firm. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough, to,1/4- in thickness.cut out with cookie cutter. Using a floured spatula, transfer cookies to greased baking sheets. Bake at 375 for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool completely on wired racks. Decorate cookies with frosting and colored sugars. Yield: 3-4 dozen 2

By: Cassandra Marquez Holidays Around the World! Most of us know that there are other holidays apart from Christmas. But do we really know there names and what there about? Here are five grand universal holidays celebrated in December! Christmas (Christian/Catholic) Christmas means the feast of Christ. Christmas is celebrated as the birth of Jesus Christ. For he was born to be a ruler. He then passed away unlawfully, but in the Christian religion Is said to have rose from the dead, and now people follow his lectures. This is why people celebrate his birthday, on December twenty-fifth. Hanukkah (Jewish) This festival is a time for Jewish people to remember their victory in a battle against the Greeks over 2,000 years ago to practice their religion without restrictions. During this battle, they had eight candles and a small amount of oil. The oil ended up lasting eight days, without end. Which they think was a gift from God. Now people light something called a menorah, which is a collection of nine candles. Every day one is lit, the candle in the middle is used to light every other candle. People also eat food, and give out gifts to celebrate. Omisoka (Japanese) Omisoka is celebrated on December 31. It was originally celebrated on the 12 of December, because of the final day of the lunar month. To celebrate, at midnight they ring the Bells at the temples. Some clean there homes top to bottom. While others visit Buddhist temples to honor the gods. Although, everyone shares the wonderful traditional Japanese dishes. Kwanzaa (African) Kwanzaa is a week long celebration held in west Africa, and in The United States. It celebrates the African heritage, unity, and culture. They have a Kinara of seven candles. Three red, three green, and a black one in the middle. Each night during Kwanzaa a candle is lit. Boxing Day (Universal) Boxing Day is celebrated December twenty sixth, and originated in The United Kingdom, and all other countries conquered by the British empire. It was made as a day where servants could go visit their families. It is celebrated modern day by giving employees double pay, new clothing for work, and otherwise normal gifts. This holiday can be celebrated universally. 4

Christmas at the Mall By: Zach O Reilly If you didn't know, Christmas at the mall gets a little bit crazy with all of the shopping. One of the ways that stores attract people are with their highly decorated Christmas areas. Some of the tricks they use are Fake snow, lights, Christmas trees, a Santa to take pictures with, aisles of decorations, gifts, and toys. This attracts many children and is what starts the huge shopping spree. Here's a little fact, in the United States, holiday shopping usually starts even before Halloween! Things aren't always fun in the malls during Christmas time. There are so many dangerous incidents during this time! These caused evacuations and even prevented people from being able to shop. A lot of these incidents are filmed on social media. Here are a few examples. In Tennessee, two men shoplifted. This wasn't a good idea though because people thought they heard gun shots and called the police. Another one was in Aurora, Illinois, which is pretty close to us! They had an evacuation because eight kids got in a fight in the food court (ages thirteen to seventeen). After, the good thing was that thankfully no one got injured. These were just some things that can happen during Christmas at the mall. Rocky s Discovery By: Ashlyn Evens I sniffed the door, waiting for my owner to come back to me after a long day. At least, I think it was a day. I don t know, it is hard to tell time when you re just a little puppy. I walk over to my bowl and gulp down the rest of my water. Then I wander over to my food, and eat the rest of that too. When is she coming back?! I think. It s been like, what, a week? I decide to just deal with it and wander around a bit. I never did get to look around the long, large, room at the end of the long stairs. Today was the day. I jump onto the first stair, easy. Then the second, little harder. Then one more, are these stairs getting taller? It seemed like it. After climbing a couple more large stairs, or mountains for Pete s sake, I really wanted to stop for a nap. Or a coma. I was wait, I m not even halfway up yet?! Come on! There HAS to be an easier way! I struggle up a few more, am I sweating? This is a work out. After like, a day, I finally make my way up. Ooh! Everything looks so chewy! I can t wait to sink my teeth into everything! I start with a small, chewy, and long black thing. Oh no, it is attached to a wall. I tug, nothing. I try again but a little harder, nothing! Ugh! Why is this so frustrating! I just keep tugging, UGH! So hard! I feel a strange tingle in on my tongue. I look at the end of the blacky thing, there is a flat-ish box thing. It has a screen? Looks chewy. I wander over to it and take a huge bite. It cracks under my teeth. It shocks me so much that I stumble backward, and fall down all the stairs! No! All that hard work for nothing! Just then, my owner opens the door and picks me up. Hey Rocky! Did you miss me? I know that I have been gone for an hour, but I hope you didn t get in trouble! You must ve been sleeping, you look SO tired! She said in a cheery voice. You have NO idea! She put me down and, I don t know how easy it had been for her, she climbed the stairs. I heard a scream. She must ve seen what a good job I did while chewing that black thing! The End 5

The Week Before Christmas Break By: Emma Friel Everyone knows Christmas Break is the most luxurious time of the year. I mean, who doesn t want to sleep until noon, watch cheesy Christmas movies, and eat sugar cookies? Although, everyone also knows the week before Christmas break is a hot mess. Every single person in that school wants to be done, especially the teachers. So, you can imagine, school is torture. Now that that s out of the way, lets go to school! I start my day by first going to science. When I sat down at my desk the white board said, Chemical Changes. Mrs. Price underlined the phrase and and disappeared into the storage closet. She came back with a bottle of Coke and about five Mentos. This is going to well. She s turned to face us and said, I need an assistant. More than half the class raised their hand to volunteer, but of course she calls on the one person without their hand up. Alex? Would you mind being my assistant? I was thinking of saying, Yes I do mind, but then I d have to explain myself and I d probably get a detention for talking back to a teacher, so I kept it to myself. I got up from my chair, with all of the eyes in the room on me, and walked up to her desk. Great, lets get started. She declared. All I m going to say is that it did not go as planned. Well, maybe for her it did. When she told me to put the Mentos in it the Coke exploded all over my face and shirt and I just stood there humiliated while the whole class laughed at me. Once the bell rang, everyone flooded out of the room except for me. You might want to pick up your gym suit on the way to your next class. You are pretty wet. Mrs. Price said as she disappeared again into the closet. I went to Math next, wearing my gym suit, and that s when I realized, oh yeah, there s a test today. I knew like half of the answers, but luckily I m a good guesser and a good cheater. When I went to P.E. my day got even worse. Tyler somehow managed to throw a basketball directly at my forehead. We were playing soccer. Finally, it was my favorite part of the school day the end of it. When I walked out of the school, I walked out with satisfaction and pride. Yep, I did it. I defeated the week before Christmas Break. 6

Tech Comparison: New iphones (8, 8 Plus, and X) vs previous iphones (7 and 7 Plus) By Mitchell Martello We all have heard about the new iphones, and have heard about some of the basic facts, but when I was asking around, nobody seemed to know the difference between the iphone 2 and the iphone X. So I have organized a list of facts that compare the phones, starting with the 7 and the 8. Also, all of the information for the Plus models of the phones are the same as the normal phones, just different sizes (5.5 vs the normal 4.7 ), and different cameras (12MP wide- angle and telephoto cameras vs the normal 12MP camera). 7 vs 8 One of the main differences between the 7 and the 8 is the glass back on the 8. This has been off the iphone since the iphone 4, because the glass breaks easily. But it is back on the 8, because they needed it for wireless charging. This could be good or bad, depending who you are. If you are really clumsy, you don t want a case, and you drop your phone a lot (like a certain friend that just smashed his screen), this might not be your ideal phone. Many people have been upset about their brand-new iphones cracking after a two-foot drop. But if you are careful with your phone and never drop it, you would be fine without a case. One minor detail is that since the glass back can only be painted certain colors, there are two other colors on the 7; Jet Black and Rose Gold. The 8 only has Silver, Space Gray, Gold. Capacity for the 7 starts at 32GB and ends at 128GB, while the 8 starts at 64GB and ends at 256GB. The display is the same except for the 8 having True Tone display, and they are both splash, water, and dust resistant. The cameras are identical, except for the 8s new feature called Slow Sync. The battery is about the same, but the 8 has this new thing called fast-charge, which can charge you phone up to 50% in 30 minutes when connected to a certain voltage charger. They both don t have a headphone jack, and that wraps it up for each phone. The price for the 8 with 64GB is $699(Plus is $799), and $849 with 256GB (Plus is $949). The 7 with 32GB is $549 (Plus is $669), and with 128GB $649 (Plus is $769). X vs EVERY OTHER IPHONE The X only has two colors; silver and space grey, vs the 8s three colors and the 7s five. The X has the biggest screen yet, a 5.8 Super Retina HD display, and instead of Touch ID, it has Face ID, a mix of different digital and thermal cameras that scan your face. It took Apple a while to train the camera not to open up to masks or when you are asleep. It has the same A11 Bionic chip as the 8 and the same wireless charging as the 8. It also has the same storage capabilities as the 8. It also has new all-screen OLED Multi-Touch display, and a new HDR display. It is splash, water, and dust resistant, and has a new dual optical image stabilization. All of the video recording capabilities are the same as the 8, and it also has a new TrueDepth camera for the front. On the front camera, there is portrait mode, portrait lighting (beta), and Animoji. The battery lasts about 2 hours longer than the 7, and there is also fast-charge. There is no headphone jack, just like the 7 and 8, and the most obvious... there is no home button. The price with 64GB is $999, the price with 256GB is $1,149. I honestly think the prices are outrageous, considering that you can buy a decent used car for the same price, and I am happy with my 128GB iphone 7, but buy whatever floats your used car. iphone 7 iphone 8 iphone X 8

*Editor s Note : Did you miss the first Smarts Swapped Story by Sophia Tseng? You can find it in last month s November Newspaper. Smarts Swapped Continued By Sophia Tseng Jake and I walk outside and once we're out of earshot we start talking. My brain is going crazy! I exclaim. I'm being taken over by math! My mind is surprisingly blank! Jake says. I mean no offense but this is a very startling discovery. You know almost nothing and- you were going to go to Tyler s today? You told me you had practice! I know, I know, I'm sorry! I didn't know what else to say. How bout the truth?! Well I knew you'd be embarrassed by me if I went to the logic meeting that you invited me to! I shoot back. And apparently your nerd friends were so unnerved by me that you hoped I'd never show up again? They really spent the next 10 minutes asking why you'd invited me when I've never gotten as much as an A? He slumps, Let's just get back to normal. Okay, I agree. What were you doing before you got switched? Umm, I'd rather not say Jake sputters Come on! Do you really want to go home like this? I mean, my home?! I ask, starting to get agitated. Ok, ok. I was wishing that I was you. Jake says, relenting. Really?! I say, aghast. I was wishing I was you! I mean it's obvious for me. You're smart, anyone would like to be you. Why would you wish you were me? Well, Jake starts, It's hard when everyone's expecting so much of you. No one really accepts you as a normal person. You're considered as a nerd. I considered this. Well if we were both wishing we could switch, maybe we should wish to switch back. I say. That makes sense. Jake agrees. On the count of three. One, I close my eyes. Two, I wish I was myself. Three! The overwhelming sensation comes again, and when I open my eyes, I'm staring back at Jake. Jake who actually looks like Jake. Yeah! I shout, and we high-five. Some crazy adventure that was. 10

Star Wars The Last Jedi By Aaron Jimenez On December 15th Star Wars will have its 8th film: The Last Jedi. The movie includes returning characters such as Rey, Kylo, Finn, Poe, and BB8. Rey will be training with the legendary Luke Skywalker! Kylo fully trained with Snoke and the knights of Ren. What can happen to our favorite heroes? Will Rey become a true Jedi or maybe she can fight Kylo? Or can Finn fight Plasma like in the trailer? Maybe B.B. 8 will find a friend to play with. Who knows? Will Luke and Leia meet up after all these years? Can Kylo turn good and save everyone? Based off the story, the first order is trying to bring down the resistance with there many advantages. Rey becoming a Jedi and Kylo becoming a full dark side member. We also see At-Ats attack the resistance base like in the the Empire Strikes Back. Maybe Leia and Kylo talk which would be heart melting! I personally think that Luke and Rey will try to defeat Snoke or Kylo. It s confirmed we will know who Rey s parents are, which hypes me up. What do you think, are you excited for the last Jedi? I hope you are, as am I. See you later and may the force be with you! MY BEST (OR MAYBE WORST) CHRISTMAS MEMORY By Mitchell Martello My best Christmas memory is probably going to my grandmas Christmas Eve party every year. There are tons of people and there is a huge dinner with awesome food. My best memory is when I was playing hide-and-seek a few years ago, and I have found the best hiding place in the whole house; under the bathroom sink. I had to move all the cleaning supplies into the laundry room so I could fit. My baby cousins were at this party, so there was a little stool that I dragged in front of the door through a little crack at the bottom to block the door to the little section from being opened. As soon as I was finished with the distractions, I sat and waited until I heard my little cousin say Ready or not, here I come! He searched the bathroom, but couldn t find my spot, so he went to go search the rest of the house. I thought they were never going to find me. From the outside, it looked like there was no way someone could fit in there. Then I heard the door creak open, and the lights flicker on, so I slowed my breathing and stayed quiet. I looked under the little crack under the door to my spot, and instead of little baby cousin feet, I saw my grandma s white Adidas gym shoes. I thought to myself Uh-oh, because we had a dish with beans for dinner. I heard the longest passing of gas in my entire life. Like that was a full 30 seconds long. It was stinky too, but what could I do? Just pop out and be like OH HEY GRANDMA! I HAVE BEEN HERE FOR THE PAST TEN MINUTES!!! Well I had to suffer the inability to breathe for what seemed like eternity, but she finally left. I guess what? I won that game of hide-and-seek, but it was not a fun round at all. 13
