Watermelon Day It s a watermelon day. Nothing left to do but soak up summer. Feel the sun up and down your spine, Warm and tingling in a reassuring way.

Laze around and dream of cool water down your back, Cold lemonade down your throat, And juicy sweet watermelon on your tongue. Lie in a hammock and sway In a breeze you conjure in your mind, Imagining a checkered blanket beside a cat-tailed pond. The blanket is covered with pickles and pasta and ants, And slightly burned pork chops. Think about catching your imagination's fireflies, While you lie in a freshly mowed field. 14 A Slice of Life What s as confusing as last week s science lab? Can be as sweet as sugar? Then, sharp as a knife? Comes quickly But with no instructions on how to handle it? Can take you up to the stars Or throw you sprawling against a rock? Just when you think you ve got it figured out, It takes an unexpected turn. Those who have lived it Either warn you about the dangers it brings, Or tell you to live it to the fullest. Perhaps you know what I am talking about. 16 Condie, Ally. Matched. New York: Scho0lastic, Print. It hushes through the night, its sound a background for the low rain of our parents voices, the lightening-quick beats of my heart. I haven t read very much, but the setting of Matched seems to be in a futuristic society with air train[s] (4) and old fashioned notions of someone else selecting marriage partners instead of letting people find love for themselves. The main character, Cassia, narrates the story in 1 st person and is with her best friend, Xander, on an air train on their way to get matched. I chose the sentence above because I liked the sound of it. The air train that hushes through the night must make a soft murmuring sound. It seems significant to the futuristic setting and the lightening-quick beats of Cassia s heart tell me that she might be feeling nervous or excited. This reminds me of the excitement I feel the night before the first day of school.

18 Flaws? There is a fat kid who is laughed at solely because he is fat. Every day he is made fun of, and every day he goes home crying. He is fat. He admits it. He tries to lose weight, but nothing works. He has zits and shaggy hair. Kids call him lard face, doughboy, and fatso. He acts like it doesn t hurt him at all. He walks by, eyes down, mouth closed, never turning, never responding to any of the taunts. On the outside, it looks like he doesn t care, but on the inside his stomach knots and his throat catches. Every time he s called a new name it slices like a paper cut. But he s become quite good at suppressing his emotions. When this kid goes home to his trailer park house, he goes right to his computer, the gateway to his sanctuary, where he doesn t get ridiculed because of his physical appearance. If you were on the outside, looking in, you might think this kid is kind of weird antisocial even. But he s really just a regular kid, who wants some friends, or just a friend, who might pick him for a team just once, or not groan and roll his eyes when he s assigned the seat next to him, or might ask him to his house to skateboard or play computer games..
