1 Carramar RESPONSIBLE RESPECTFUL I AM A LEARNER SAFE A STAR Ph: From the Principal Tuesday 19th June 2018, Issue 9 Carramar.PS@education.wa.edu.au Dear families Thanks to everyone for your contribution to what has been a very successful Semester 1. It has been a pleasure working with such a dedicated and supportive school community. The partnerships that have been built to help our children achieve their individual potential bode well for ongoing success at Carramar Primary, as we continue to work together to meet our high expectations and provide a quality education program for our children. It has been a busy term with many events such as: our annual Mother s Day Stalls, NAPLAN online, Walk Safely to School Day, Cross Country, Maggie Dent Seminar, Lapathon, various incursions and excursions, and of course, our Disco this Friday evening. Next week, we will be celebrating NAIDOC Week with various events in classes. NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year s theme is: Because of her, we can! It celebrates the essential role that women have played - and continue to play - as active and significant role models at the community, local, state and national levels. Our term will conclude with an assembly from T 11 and 12 with a NAIDOC Theme. Our Year 6 students will be participating in a Lightning Carnival next Wednesday. We know that they will demonstrate excellent sportsmanship and be wonderful ambassadors for our school. Our music students will be involved in a Music Evening on Thursday, showcasing our choir and instrumentalists. Thank you to all staff involved in these events and all parents for their support. As we look forward to Term 3, there are many exciting things planned. Please keep a close eye on the school calendar to ensure that you don t miss important activities and events. Semester 1 reports, will be distributed on Wednesday 27 th June using the CONNECT platform. Thanks to all parents who have contacted the office to confirm arrangements for this. If you do not have CONNECT access, or would like to receive a paper copy of your child s report, please contact the front office ASAP. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the support you have provided me over the past three terms. It has been a great privilege to have had the opportunity to lead this school, and it has certainly been a highlight of my career; to be part of a community that values education, is significantly invested and always wants the best for their children. I appreciate the challenges of working with a new Principal who has different ideas and different ways of thinking and doing, and I am grateful for the manner in which you have welcomed and supported me. Thank you to all staff who have supported the school with replacements for staff attending Professional Learning, on Long Service and /or on Sick Leave. Mr Zeid is very much looking forward to returning and working with everyone. There will be some changes to staffing in Term 3 and we hope to have these finalised before the end of term. Term 3 will commence for teachers on Monday 16th July. Students will return on Tuesday 17th July. Have a safe and relaxing break and enjoy time with your family and friends. Over the weekend, Year 5 student Holly kept hearing a faint noise that sounded like crying or yelps. Holly s mum thought it may have been from a neighbour s dog but Holly wasn t convinced and after about an hour of keeping at her, Mum investigated over the fence. To their horror they found their elderly neighbour in a collapsed chair and unable to move. She had been there for 3 1/2 hrs before the pair found her. They called an ambulance and their neighbour is now recovering in hospital from her ordeal. Good work Holly, the outcome could have been much worse if not for your persistence. Molly recently represented Western Australia at the National State Schools Gymnastics Competition. The Year 6 student travelled to Melbourne and performed 2 routines in her speciality, Tumbling, and placed 14th out of 40 competitors. Molly has been tumbling for only 2 years. Congratulations. It s official! Sam Perry is The Voice Sam s super proud Mum, Carramar s own, Mrs Pip Perry, was there to watch as Sam was voted the winner. Congratulations Sam, Mrs Perry and the whole Perry family.

4 In wri ng, we have been learning about procedures, such as, how to fold a T-shirt, build a marshmallow catapult and how to play a board game. To reinforce the learning the visi ng preservice teacher Miss Leve, asked the class to tell her how to make a Vegemite sandwich using explicit and detailed instruc ons. At first the students instruc ons were vague which resulted in a lot of humour. The students soon realised that their instruc ons needed to be more detailed. We had a lot of fun learning how to write procedures. Lights, Camera, Action! Drama with Mrs Dobbs Years 5 and 6 have enjoyed crea ng short drama performances in lessons this term. They have been exploring the elements of role, character, voice and movement. It has been great to see how students have been learning to collaborate in groups, use props as a resource and further develop their confidence to perform in front of an audience.

Year 6 students were asked to write a paragraph focusing on tightening the tension to create suspense and keep the reader guessing about what might happen if they were to see a shadow in the night.

As I swovelled around, my heart pounded against the walls of my chest a menacing hand closed around my throat. I mustered a shrill shriek before I fell into a deep dark hole. My dry throat clogged up suffocating me as a whiff of rancid milk drifted making me want to hurl. As I cleared up my airways I listened to the PITTER PATTER of the rain drumming on the roof. Then, I heard it. SCRATCHES. I swivelled around. Petrified of what might be lurking. Then, I saw it. My vision blurred as its penetrable eyes pierced through me. Eerie beams of moonlight spread across the wooden dock. Slightly hazy the Spector sailed closer. Suddenly the footsteps stopped and my heart skipped a beat. The terrifying black eyes glared upon me. I heard a death defying scream. As my heart pace quickens so do the footsteps, getting faster and faster as they get closer and closer. Come out, come out wherever you are growls the low terrifying voice. These words send a chill up my spine. I come out from behind the carousel, seeing the distorted grimace on that creeps face only makes me shudder. Yet here I am, walking through an abandoned showgrounds at night, the ground is slick with rain and I see a distorted figure in the distance. What do I do? By Zahlia
