1 1st July 2016 Madginford Primary School Newsletter Dear Parents/Carers, This newsletter is mainly focussed on Music at Madginford there is simply so much going on! We hope you enjoy reading about all that has been happening and what is on offer both inside and outside school! Our specialist music teacher, Mrs Hall, is doing a fantastic job at organising musical activities and experiences that the whole school can participate in. Please read on for a review of what has happened this year and keep checking the newsletters for information for what will be going on next year! It is our school Summer Fayre this Saturday! The field will be bustling with stalls, games, things to do and buy. Please come along and support our school the money raised from the Fayre ensures our children can have that added bit of magic in their education and it really does make a difference. The weather looks changeable so bring a brolly and we look forward to seeing everybody there! Madginford Values Well done to our Year R pupils who performed their first assembly to their parents, carers, relatives and friends today! Everyone was very impressed with the standard of the performance and the singing was wonderful! Well done for demonstrating all our values, Year R!

BREAKFAST CLUB Please ensure money is put safely in an envelope before coming to school we are finding an increasing number of children dropping & losing money on the way in to school. Please ensure the envelope has the child s name, class, amount & what the money is for clearly on the front.

3 Page 3 YEAR 2 ART WEEK Our Year 2 children completed their art week activities early this week. They were busy creating batik images using a flour & water paste. Looks like great fun! SPORTS DAY REMINDER Parents should drop children off at school as usual on Wednesday 13th July. The side gate to the field will be opened at 9.25 for parents to walk down and watch potted sports. KS2 will take their turn first, from , whilst KS1 hear a talk by our visiting Paralympian, Steve Brown. KS1 will take part in their sports from noon whilst KS2 hear the talk. Parents are asked to leave the site by 12.10pm and may return at 1.25pm to watch the running races. We hope the weather holds! YEAR 4 HOCKEY Congratulations to our Year 4 Hockey Team who took part in the Kent championships this week and came third in the County! ATHLETICS The Year 3 & 4 Athletics Team performed brilliantly at the County finals yesterday. They took part in javelin, long jump, speed bounce, chest push, vertical jump and 5 strides in the field events; plus lots of different relays in the track events. There were outstanding individual and team performances which led to the team coming 6th overall. A superb achievement at County level! Well done to everyone in the team we are extremely proud of you!

4 Page 4 MUSIC AT MADGINFORD Welcome to our musical celebration of the last year at Madginford! There has been so much music going on during the past year that some of it may have escaped you please read on and see what has been happening! YEAR 1 Our Year 1 children have been enjoying playing the African drums this year. As well as learning the basic Djembe techniques they have displayed fantastic teamwork in playing as a band. YEAR 2 As well as drumming, Year 2 put a lot of effort into music for their Christmas production. Their Christingle service included singing, percussion and brass instruments. Parents were particularly impressed with their performances and found the candlelit musical event very moving!

5 Page 5 YEAR R Our Year R children concentrate mainly on singing and percussion instruments during their year. The children have enjoyed singing musical stories These activities are usually familiar to them and it is lovely to hear their voices grow as the year goes on! YEAR 3 Year 3 children have been learning the keyboard. It is fantastic to have a music room which is big enough to accommodate all the keyboards and instruments which the children play and is great to see it in constant use! it YEAR 4 The school rocked to the Samba beat as Year 4 enjoyed their Samba workshop this year! The children had the chance to play different types of drums and learn lots of Samba patterns. The end result sounded amazing!

6 Page 6 YEAR 5 Our Year 5 children concentrate mainly on the recorder. We have a specialist recorder teacher from Kent Music School who accompanies the children on the piano some of the tunes they play are very jazzy and sound wonderful! YEAR 6 The Year 6 children thoroughly enjoyed their make a band day! There were some wonderful performances of Smoke on the water and Eye of the tiger and it was fantastic to see the children concentrating on their favourite instruments. Maybe we have some stars of the future here at Madginford?! EXTRA CURRICULAR MUSIC Andrew Parry Music come in to Madginford Primary and give lessons on guitar and also drums both have waiting lists due to their popularity but please ask at the school office if you do want any more information. Our Rock Chorus club is a very successful after school club; as is our Brass Band and Jazz Band. Our Christmas Choir and Christmas Chamber Choir add festive flair both within school and at outside events. Mrs Parfitt comes in to school for piano lessons and Mrs Hall offers brass instrument lessons. There should be something for everyone!

7 Page 7 ROCK CHORUS Have you ever sung at the O2 Arena in London? Our Rock Chorus have! This was just one of the fantastic opportunities they have enjoyed this year. The have won the Maidstone Primary Inter Schools Music competition two years running and are finalists in the KM Walk to School Song Contest. Good luck, Rock Chorus! WHOLE SCHOOL MUSIC All children take part in singing assemblies throughout the year, singing a variety of pop/rock and traditional songs. Our MPS Has Talent competition also allows those who play other instruments or sing to come to the fore and show the whole school their talent. A recording is being made of the school bands and singers to put on one CD more details of this available soon! WHERE CAN I SEE MADGINFORD MUSICIANS? Children play at a variety of school events (School Fete, Queen s Birthday Picnic, Remembrance Day Services etc) but are often out and about performing at other events. These include fetes in local villages, the Maidstone Music Festival, at Age UK s Dorothy Goodman Centre at Christmas and local Remembrance Services. We hope to continue these links next year and build even stronger links with our community.

Nick Gyte has been successful in gaining a Music Scholarship to Valley Park School. It is great to know that the music he undertook here at Madginford Primary has led to this fantastic opportunity for him! We know he is one of a number of pupils who have gained a Scholarship and we wish all our Year 6 children good luck in their new schools!
