5 U2 Portfolio Modification The Unit 2 Portfolio has been modified. Students will not write a compare and contrast essay. Task: You will be writing a personal narrative essay on a lesson you learned from failure or a mistake made. Your essay will be a 5-paragraph, double-spaced essay. Make sure that you have a thesis statement at the end of your introduction and clear topic sentences in each body paragraph. Prompt: The lessons we take from failure or a mistake made can be fundamental to later success. Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure or made a mistake. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? If you are struggling with the topic then you may write about three goals you are going to set for yourself this school year and how you plan to accomplish them.

9 The Third Bank of the River by João Guimarães Rosa One day, a man orders a boat. Without explanation, he spends years rowing alone on the river, never speaking, never going home. His son brings him food every day. As the son approaches old age, he volunteers to take his father s place in the boat. But when his father approaches the bank, the son is overcome with terror and runs away. Guilt-stricken, the son asks to be put in a boat on the river after his death. Symbolism the use of an object, or symbol, to represent a more abstract or general concept Ex: a rose can be a symbol for love In The Third Bank of the River, Rosa uses objects, such as a boat, to generalize about the human experience. It was to be made specially for him, of mimosa wood. It was to be sturdy enough to last twenty or thirty years and just large enough for one person. 11 The Censors by Luisa Valenzuela The Censors Historical Background Published in 1976 Military faction overthrew Argentina s government Severe rule, restricted liberties Killed those who opposed Strict censorship of its citizens Juan writes a letter to Marianna, who is living abroad after escaping from a repressive regime. Fearing that the letter will get him into trouble with the government s censors, he applies for a job in the Censorship Division. At first, he merely hopes to intercept his letter. However, he becomes so dedicated to his job that he stops socializing. His zeal earns him many promotions. Eventually Juan censors his own letter to Mariann. The following day he is executed after censoring his own message.

In the story The Censors, Juan, who intended to save his letter from censorship, ended up condemning himself by censoring his own letter. The narrator, Rolf s girlfriend, tells us how Rolf abandons his role as a reporter to help and comfort a trapped girl named Azucena. Characterization We learn about Rolf through his own thoughts, actions, and speeches as well as through the actions and words of the narrator. Be aware of how the author describes Rolf and Acuzena. In essence, she develops literary characters based on real people. Be able to identify characterization
