Scripting Guidelines First person, informal narration Raising questions Dramatic and humorous elements, creating empathy Comparisons to modern time Ancient Greeks believed that horses had a divine origin. This could be probably explained because of the astonishment of the early Greeks when sawing the first horses. Ancient Greeks believed that wehorses had a divine origin. This seems strange to you, doesn t it? Well, you may take us horses for granted now, but try to remember the first time you laid your eyes on a horse relative of mine. I bet you were totally charmed! Can you imagine the Greeks astonishment when they first saw my ancestors? I still remember my father telling me stories about this vivid moment, proudly describing how our ancestors dazzled the Greeks the first time they met! 8
Scripting & Staging Guidelines Prompt visitors to observe the exhibits Embed instructions to guide visitor s focus (screen or exhibits) No need to be too explicit to navigate between exhibits, make it a game! Encourage visitors to move back and forth, to revisit/pass by exhibits 9
Authors Experience Creativity Workshops 09/2013 & 10/2013, Acropolis Museum To design and implement (with CAT) a story about the role of the snake in antiquity Group A Group B CHESS Final Review - 10/04/
CAT Workshop Personas Takis Karathanasis Dimitris Georgiadis 53 years old shop owner GROUP A: The snake in its multiple forms guides the visitor in Athens of the Archaic Period and together they meet gods and heroes. 16 years old student GROUP B: The snake invites the visitor in a mysterious journey where she is asked to choose between the path of good or evil. is really great but sometimes it is too much for me. would be cooler with technology
Hands-on Personas Nikos Athanasiou Georgia Athanasiou Jack Harris Natalie Schmidt Takis Karathanasis Dimitris Georgiadis 10 years old student 71 years old retired teacher 24 years old athlete 35 years old web designer 53 years old shop owner 16 years old student is boring makes me feel young would be much more interesting if the exhibits could tell me their stories is an excellent way to relax between meetings! is really great but sometimes it is too much for me. would be cooler with technology
Group Activities PHASE 1 (20 minutes) Read the 4 Information Cards (Snakes theme, 7 exhibits) Select the information to use, for the assigned persona Choose narrators & sketch main plot PHASE 2 (30-50 minutes) Create the storyboard & write the script Adjust for staging, describe productions PHASE 3 (20 minutes) Story presentation to other groups Demonstration of story import to CHESS Authoring Tool (CAT) 13
Scripting Instructions - Example Use pen & paper to sketch the storyboard Divide the plot in brief sections with coherent meaning, or Script Units(SUs) Link the SUs in the Story Graph Use Branching Points (BPs) to give more than one choices to the visitor (addressing e.g. different visitor characteristics, interests) Gorgon Medusa Welcome to the Snakes World Snake Erichthonios introduces himself Choose path to follow Gigantomachy Temple Snake 14
Scripting Instructions - Example Link SUs with specific exhibitsor museum places For each SU, write the story script Extend the script with navigation hints Welcome to the Snakes World Snake Erichthonios introduces himself Choose path to follow Gorgon Medusa Mortal, come closer! Do you know me? I dare you to look at me in the eyes like hundreds did and I turned them to stone! Even dead I am a great weapon on the breastplate of goddess Athena Gigantomachy Hey, you, come closer.. Sssss. Don t be afraid! You know that you are now entering the world of snakes, a world full of danger, temptation, but also wisdom, protection and life. This world surrounds as but few know it. I am called Erixthonios, and I was born from the Earth. I am one of the first kings of Athens and adopted son of the goddess Athena, protector of the city. Look for the snakes and you will discover the secrets of my world. But in this trip you need to choose your path. Do you choose the path of virtue or malice? Temple Snake Come find me, I am here, on the pediment of the Temple. Do not be afraid, look at me. Notice my colours, unchanged during centuries. We are here standing as guardians with my companion, protectors of the temple of Athena. 15
Trajectories Model Example There is such a statue in this gallery! He is my favourite athlete so let's go find him to get him on board. Look for a horse rider near here. He has to be a complete rider, head and all, not bits and pieces. Another way of showing off was to take part in the races. If you won, you'd want to make a big deal of it, by commissioningexpensive statues of riders and dedicating them to the gods on the Acropolis. This young rider sports a wreath on his head because he has won in a horse race. So we now have not just an athlete but a real winner amongst us! Can you count the beads? But let s not get carried away. We have many more friends to find! So now then, let me see, I boasted about being companions toheroes, I bragged aboutour performance in sports events, but there's something I'm forgetting... Local trajectory Approach Engage Experience Disengage Connect Connect Connect Global narrative 16
Scripting Level Combined trajectories theory for cultural experiences with storytelling Global narrative (e.g. horses trapped in time, hero builds army, Athenian shares memories, reporter from space, etc) Local trajectory around the exhibits Horse Intro Chariot horses Experience Persian Horse Get 4 horses on board Hint to find 4 horses Confirm Location Horses are on board We need more horses Connect Approach Engage Disengage Re-connect 17
