Name:.. CE French Revision Guide VOCAB + EXAM TIPS In relation to the CE syllabus M Hempsted and Mme Chevalley

Introduction: Bienvenue to your CE revision guide for French. This will help and support you through your CE French exams starting in the Summer exams of Year 7 and ending with the actual exams in Summer of Year 8. This guide is meant to accompany work you have done in class as well as the revision guide that you purchased. As everyone s needs are unique to them, we are giving you a general guide here and you are expected to dip in and out of all the resources that are your disposal, to best suit your requirements. What is in the CE French exam? SPEAKING [25% 5-6 minutes] This is split into 3 parts :- A role play this will be given to you on the day and comprises of a short conversation between you and your teacher. You will prepare answers to specific questions in your preparation time with a dictionary. Communication is key here don t get too bogged down with saying exactly what is on the sheet. There are 6 questions (1 being unpredictable and requiring you to think on your feet) and you will be awarded 1 mark for each correct one plus a possible 3 marks based on the quality of your language. Possible 9 marks in total up for grabs. Prepared topic this is a text that you will have prepared in your French classes. Your teacher will ask you 4 questions to which you will respond with your answers. You will be judged on Content (what you say), Accuracy (how well you have used the language

and finally on Quality of Language (have you used a variety of vocab and tenses.) Unprepared topic the topic will also be given to you in the 10-minute preparation time and it will not be related to your chosen prepared topic. They will be one of the following: Personal description, Family, Friends & Pets. House, Home, Daily routine and Chores. Life and work at School. Free time and Holiday activities. READING [25% 30 minutes] This is made up of 25 questions on several short passages and exercises. They cover a range of reading comprehension skills such as gap-fill, multiple choice, matching pictures to descriptions, choosing true and false statements. In most of the sections, you are to write in French (don t worry communication is key here again, no need to worry too much about accuracy). One of the sections you will be asked to write in English. WRITING [25% 30 minutes] This is split into 2 sections. In the first one you will be presented with 5 picture stimuli and you must write a sentence relating to it in some way. To access those higher grades think outside the box and use a variety of vocab, tenses and adjectives SHOW OFF. Avoid simply describing what the picture depicts. The second section is where you must write a letter to a pen-friend and it must include at least 4 of the 5 bullet points. These bullet points will be in simple French. Your task is to somehow formulate a story and write about it in your letter.

There is a word limit set of between words. It is important to show off everything that you know here. Don t focus too much on writing an amazing story mention and elaborate on those points. If you can, cover 5 points as it will give you a safety net for an occasion where you might have messed up one of the points. LISTENING [25% 20 minutes] This is based on recorded material and you are being tested on your ability to pick out key information and not to be fooled by some red-herrings (traps) they have put in there. Be calm and tune in your ear. Exercises include multiple choice, true or false, box-ticking, matching the recording with visual or verbal options and completing sentences. You will by now be familiar with the topics covered throughout the CE Syllabus you will have seen them many times over your time studying French. This revision guide will of course help you revisit them all, but it can also be used alongside your actual Revision Guides so do not forget to use them! Remember that any exam is your chance to show off what you can do. It is a snapshot of your ability so you need to show the examiner exactly what you are capable of. Learning a few set sentences is a good way to start, adapting and manipulating these to other situations will gain you those higher marks and a sure-fire way to make sure you get the best mark possible. Please come and see us if you have any problems, want more advice or if you want to show us what you have done to make sure you are on the right track. Bon Courage!

Speaking ROLEPLAY RULE SHEET à quelle heure "...A QUELLE HEURE" is used to ask at what time something is happening. When you are learning how to use A QUELLE HEURE, it is easiest if you put it right at the end of the sentence Combien "COMBIEN" usually means "HOW MUCH?" or "HOW MANY" When you are learning how to use COMBIEN, it is easiest if you put COMBIEN immediately after the verb. Comment COMMENT has the following meanings, depending on the sentence "WHAT" (as in "WHAT is your name) "WHAT IS IT LIKE" (as in "WHAT IS your bedroom LIKE?) "HOW" (as in "HOW do you travel when you go on holiday") Est-ce que EST-CE QUE does not really have a meaning in English on its own. It is always used at the beginning of a sentence. EST-CE QUE turns a statement into a question EST-CE QUE is shortened to EST-CE QU' if it is followed by a vowell. For example - "Est-ce qu'il y a..."

- "OÙ" means "WHERE" - When you are learning how to use OÙ, it is usually easiest if you put OÙ right at the beginning of the sentence. Sometimes, you must follow OÙ with EST-CE QUE Pour aller à POUR ALLER À is used when you want to ask the way to somewhere When you are learning how to use POUR ALLER À..., it is easiest if you put it right at the beginning of the sentence. There are 4 versions of POUR ALLER À. You need to choose the correct version according to the noun which follows it. The 4 versions are:- Pour aller au café, s'il vous plaît? (use this when it is followed by a masculine singular noun like "café") (Can you tell me the way to the café please?) Pour aller à la gare, s'il vous plaît? (use this when it is followed by a feminine singular noun like "café") (Can you tell me the way to the station please?) Pour aller à l'hôpital, s'il vous plaît? (use this when it is followed by a noun beginning with a vowell or a silent "h") (Can you tell me the way to the station please?) Pour aller aux toilettes, s'il vous plaît? (use this when it is followed by a plural noun) (Can you tell me the way to the toilets please?)

Quand "QUAND" means "WHEN" When you are learning how to use QUAND, it is easiest if you put QUAND immediately after the verb. Alternatively, you can sometimes put QUAND at the beginning of the sentence and follow it with EST-CE QUE Quel "QUEL" can mean any of the following, depending on the sentence "WHAT" as in "WHAT is the weather like?" or "WHAT is the time?" or "WHAT is your favourite subject?" "WHICH" as in "WHICH FLAVOUR would you like?" "HOW" as in "HOW old are you?" When you are learning how to use QUEL, most of the time, you put it at the beginning of the sentence. Qu est-ce que "QU'EST-CE QUE" means "WHAT" When you are learning how to use QU'EST-CE QUE, you usually put it right at the beginning of the sentence. QU'EST-CE QUE is shortened to QU'EST-CE QU' if it is followed by a vowel. For example - "Qu'est-ce qu'il y a.." Very occasionally, you may be asked to say something which needs just QUE instead of QU'EST-CE QUE.
