2 How to make a question A question is an expression used to make a request for information. There are many different ways to form questions. We will look at two kinds of questions. One is called a yes/no question and the other is called a WH-question. Question Yes/No question WH-question 1- Yes/No question: A yes / no question is a question that can be answered with yes or no. *There are three steps for yes/no question: 1- If there is only one verb in the sentence and it is a verb to be, simply switch the position of the subject and the verb. subject v. to be e.g. She is clever. Is she clever? subject v. to be They are good friends. Are subject they good friends? v. to be Ramy was sick. Was Ramy sick? 2- If there are two verbs in the sentence, switch the positions of the first verb and the subject. Subject first verb second verb e.g. They were watching a movie. Were they watching a movie? Subject first verb second verb e.g. Her sister can sing well. Can her sister sing well?

3 Subject first verb second verb e.g. She had waited for Tom. Had she waited for Tom? Subject first verb second verb e.g. He should clean his room. Should he clean his room? 3- If there is only one verb in the sentence and it is in the past tense, we will use Did at the start of the sentence and change the verb to its base form. verb in the past e.g. She washed the dishes yesterday. Did she wash the dishes yesterday? verb in the past e.g. He drank a cup of tea two hours ago. Did he drink a cup of tea two hours ago? If the verb is in the present tense, we will use Do or Does at the start of the sentence and change the verb to its base form. Does Do he she it I they we you verb in the present simple e.g. She sleeps early every day. Does she sleep early every day? i.e. if there is only one verb in the sentence and this verb ends in (s), we will start the question with Does. If there is one verb in the sentence and this verb is in the present tense without (s), we will start the question with Do. e.g. They play football every weekend. Do they play football every weekend?

5 Wh-question: Wh-questions begin with question words. Question words are: what, when, where, who, whom, which, whose, why and how. We use them to ask for information. The answer cannot be yes or no. question word Function example sentence What asking for information about something/idea/action asking for repetition or confirmation What is this? 6 We usually form wh-questions with A question word + a helping verb + subject + main verb Helping verbs are:*auxiliary verbs:am,is,are, was,were,has,have,had,do,does, did. *modal verbs: can,could,may,might,will,would,shall,should,must. Steps of making wh-question: 1- Change the sentence into question form. 2- Add the question word. 3- Remove the answer. e.g. This is for Susan. Is this for Susan? Who is this for? e.g. He was watching a film. Was he watching a film? What was he watching? e.g. They were in the garden. Were they in the garden? Where were they? e.g. He broke the window. Did he break the window? What did he break? Who or What as subject: To ask about the subject by using Who or What, don't change the sentence to question form, just replace the subject by who or what. e.g. John cleans the room. Who cleans the room? e.g. The wind damaged the building. What damaged the building? Change the given statements into wh-questions: 1. 8 Unit 6: Writing letters Grammar The passive (present & past) Active sentences Passive sentences Children play football every day. Football is played by children every day. Farmers grow cotton and wheat. Wheat and cotton are grown by farmers. Ahmed took my book yesterday. My book was taken by Ahmed yesterday. Maha ate pizza and burger last night. Pizzza and burger were eaten last night. -In active sentence we always start with the subject who did the action. -In Passive sentences we start with the object of the verb. - We use the passive voice: *To focus on/stress on the action rather than the person who did it. e.g. The new hospital was opened yesterday. *When we don t know who did the action. e.g. My car is stolen. (I don t know who stole it) *When it is easy to understand who did the action. e.g. The man was arrested last night. * When it s not important to know who does the action. eg:- these televisions are made in Japan.(It doesn t matter who makes them) * Sometimes using a statement in passive is more polite than active voice. SO, the passive stresses on the action itself not who or what caused it. The form: Object +verb to be+ Past Participle + by + subject a) Put the object in the place of the subject (at the beginning of a sentence) b) Use the present simple passive form: (is /are +past participle of the verb) Use the past simple passive form: (was / were +past participle of the verb) c) Put by d) Put the subject in the place of the object e) Subject pronouns change into object pronouns.

(Active) Tennis was played by him. (passive) Most verbs have past tense and past participle in ed (worked, played, listened). But many of the most frequent verbs are irregular:

13 Unit 7: The game show New vocabulary: * show: a television or radio programme or a theater performance. *audience: the people who sit and watch a performance at a theatre,cinema etc. * congratulate: to tell someone that you are happy because something good has happened to them. *fortunate: having good things happen to you. Lucky. *applaud: clap. *apprehensive: worried. *anxiously: worried and nervous. *chance: an opportunity to do something. *cheer: to encourage someone by shouting. *expense: the money that you spend on something. *folks: people. *remind: to help someone to remember something. *stir: to mix or to move something round and round. * pause: a short time when someone stop moving or doing something. * horrid: horrible. Unpleasant. *fanfare: a loud sound of trumpets. *disappointment: the feeling of being unhappy because something was not as good as you expected. 14 Grammar Future passive: It is used to express that something will be done by someone in the future. The form: Subject + will be + past participle e.g. The project will be finished soon. The car will be washed by my brother tomorrow. Rewrite the sentences in passive voice. 1. Jane will buy a new computer. 2. Millions of people will visit the museum Our boss will sign the contract. 4. They will visit Ali tomorrow Tom will take a new medal. 6- A lot of tourists will visit the Egyptian museum.. 7- The teacher will explain the exercise tomorrow... 16 Unit 8: The hidden persuaders * New vocabulary: *Persuade: to make someone believe something by giving him good reasons to do it. *Agency : a business that arranges services for people. *Glows : to produce a continuous light. *Rhymes : words which rhyme have the same last sound. *Bubbles : a ball of air in a liquid : soap bubbles. *Attractive: very pleasing in appearance or sound. *Aim to somebody: to be directed to somebody. *Flavours : how food or drink tastes. *Impress: to make someone familiar with the value of something *Emphasis: to show or state that something is very important. *Bargain: low price. *Brilliant: full of light, shining or bright in colour. *Flamingo: a large bird with pink feathers. *Lime: around fruit like a lemon but smaller and green. *Fizzy pop: having a lot of bubbles. *Encourage: to make someone more likely to do something. *Straight away: immediately. Language building Gerund (v. + ing) Sometimes we use verbs that end in (ing) as nouns. We call these gerunds The gerund is used:- 1- As a noun (subject or object) e.g. Swimming is a very good form of exercise. - I have some shopping to do today. 2- After prepositions:- e.g. I m good at speaking English. - She is interested in reading. 3- After some verbs: (enjoy like go dislike hate) e.g. He enjoys reading stories. - I go swimming in the sea. - She likes eating ice-cream.

18 Comprehension (Class Leader) Laura couldn t wait to hear Mrs. Perkins big announcement. She had a feeling it had something to do with a class competition. Laura loved competitions. She didn t care what the prize was. She just liked to compete, and more than that, she liked to win. Okay, everyone, Mrs. Perkins said. Starting today, we will choose a class leader for each month. The person chosen will help me pass out papers, distribute materials, and write on the blackboard. He or she will also get to decide on the theme for the class project that month. Laura could hardly sit still. It was a contest! She had to win. Mrs. Perkins held up a gold star badge. The class leader will wear this badge during school hours. Laura s eyes widened. A shiny gold badge! Everyone would know she was a winner if she was wearing that badge. 19 Relative clauses: who Grammar It s used for people. Who is a teacher? A teacher is a person who teaches students at school. A pilot is a person who flies a plane. *Note: We use who to refer to the subject or the doer of the action, so it s followed by the verb which someone does or did. *Join the following sentences using who : 1-A butcher is a person. The butcher sells meat.. 2-I met a woman. She can speak six languages... 3-A man phoned. He didn t give his name. 4-A policeman stopped our car. He wasn t very friendly. Remember: Don t use the pronouns of things or people after the relative clause. Which *It s used for things. -What is the camera? The camera is a machine which we use to take photos. A book is something which is used for reading. *Note : We use which to refer to things, so it follows the nouns or names of things and followed by a description or usage of this thing. *Join the following sentences using Which : 1-A coffee maker is a machine. The coffee maker makes coffee... 2-You always ask questions. These questions are very difficult. 3-Emma lives in an old house. This house is 500 years old.

22 "If" type two: Unit 9: Reading Poetry. Grammar Conditional If -If I had a lot of money, I would buy a big house. -If he was a millionaire, he would help the poor. Usage: 1) (If) type two is used to express improbable or unreal situations to say that it s impossible to happen now but it might happen later. *If + past simple, would + infinitive You can omit comma when you use (if) in the middle -I would buy a big house if I had a lot of money. 2) (If) two can also be used for giving advice: -Mariam: I have toothache. What should I do? 24 Reading Comprehension Read the following passage and answer the questions below: Melvin was looking for a sports jacket so he went to a clothes store shop. He looked at the jackets and picked a few that he really liked. First, he picked out a light blue jacket with metallic buttons, but when he tried it on, it was too small. Next, he picked a nice white one with silver buttons, but when he tried it on it was too large. Finally he picked out a light brown jacket with gold buttons. When he put it on, it seemed to be perfect. Melvin paid forty five pounds for his new jacket and went home feeling happy. 27 Grammar Present perfect (active & passive): Usage: Something has been done by someone at sometime up to now. Active: They have cleaned the clinic. Passive: The clinic has been cleaned by them. Active: Thomas has written many books. Passive: Many books have been written by Thomas. The form: Object + have / has + been + verb3 (past participle)+ by + subject Change the following sentences into passive voice: 1- The salesmen have sold all the carpets Dr. John has treated all the patients. 3- Kate has paid the bill I have eaten a sandwich I have opened the present The gardener has watered the plants.
