She's funny, friendly, sarcastic, intelligent and just the sweetest person you'll ever meet. Q: How does it feel to have your senior year coming to an end? A: Knowing that my senior year is coming to an end makes me feel ecstatic, since I am ready to start my life outside of High School. Q: If there's any advice you'd give to the underclassmen, what would it be? A: A piece of advice I would give to the underclassmen is to just appreciate your teachers and all the things they re teaching you because it s all going to be worth it in the end. Q: What three words best 1
Put more effort into exercising -Annie Price, 11 To be more sarcastic -Sabryna Darasouk, 12 What was the best or the worst part of 2016? The best part of 2016 was football season! She attended the University of California, Riverside and earned her Bachelor s degree in English/ Women s Studies; California State University, San Bernardino for her credential in English/ Secondary Education, and University of California, Irvine for her Master s in English. Before working as a teacher here at BHS, she worked at the UCR campus as a bookstore cashier. Not only that, but she also worked at various schools in Riverside County as an AVID tutor, a substitute teacher in Riverside, Moreno Valley, Corona-Norco, and Fontana. She taught English and CAHSEE prep in Fontana, as well as English, Drama, Life Skills, and CAHSEE prep in Moreno Valley. Q: How long have you been a teacher at BHS? A: I've taught here at BHS for two years. Q: Have you always been an English teacher, or have you taught other subjects? A: In addition to English, I have taught Drama, Life Skills, and CAHSEE prep. Q: Did you always plan on being a teacher? A: Not really I went through my first three years of college not knowing what I wanted to do. I describe you? How would you like to be remembered as you leave BHS? A: The three words that best describe me would be sarcastic, enthusiastic, and awkward. When I leave BHS, I want to be remembered as someone who was too sarcastic to understand. Q: What is the most challenging task senior year? A: Honestly, the most challenging task as a senior has to be maintaining your grades. Q: If you had an opportunity to travel anywhere, where would you go? Why? A: If I had the opportunity to travel anywhere, I would definitely travel to Thailand. Thailand is one of the many cultural places that just catches my attention and it is just somewhere I d want to live. Q: What are your plans after high school? A: My plans after high school may still be undecided, but I do plan to attend a community college for a few years then transfer to a university. Q: Do you enjoy being the president of the GSA club? A: Being president of the GSA club is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. So yes, I most definitely enjoy being president of the GSA club. Q: So far, what has been the highlight of your senior year? A: Well, so far, the highlight of my senior year has to be going to Pride with the GSA club and getting the opportunity to be a part of such an outstanding community. 2
Rodriguez, 9 Best part was spending a week with my aunt. -Desiree Bernal, 12 When you look back, what will you remember most about 2016? When I look back I d have to say I d remember getting my first job. -Lisa Yang, 11 I ll remember the beginning of my Senior year and how great making friends was. -Arionna Garcia, 12 Winning first place in our first band competition of the year! -Christian Quevedo, 12 When I look back I'll remember the marching season the most. -Claudia Rodriguez, 11 Those stressful days I stayed up late at night working on my college applications. -Daisy Dondiego, 12 The presidential election, senior year football season, spending time with my close friends and how much I struggled in my classes. -Jose Romo, 12 All the money i made and spent on my iphone 7 plus. -Kareem Naime, 12 Making the basketball team with my best friend. -Amir Walton, 10 just knew that I loved English as a subject and wanted to do something in the field. I really loved working as an AVID tutor, so when it came time to graduate college, pursuing teaching became a natural decision. As a child, I wanted to be a writer. If my students promise not to make fun of me, I can share some stories I wrote as a child. Q: What is your favorite part of being a teacher? A: My favorite part of being a teacher is feeling like I'm helping students understand something. When you teach a subject like English, it's hard to get a student to like the subject, but when I can help a student understand the subject, it feels good knowing that I made a difference. Q: What is your favorite part of working at BHS? A: My favorite part of working at BHS is knowing that I have teachers I can go to at any time should I need to cry, to vent, to brainstorm ideas, or even if I just need to steal supplies. At some of my other schools where I've worked, I've felt like I was all on my own and I had to do it all by myself. But when I came here, in a very short amount of time, I was welcomed and befriended by a few wonderful teachers, and that has made all the difference. Q: Have you ever considered changing your career at any time? A: When I was a new teacher, yes. Probably twice a day. Sometimes hourly. Not so much now. Q: What are your hobbies? A: I feel like hobbies are things people have when they're not busy. I'm busy pretty much all the time. When I do have free time, which is never, I try and sleep or read-- if my son lets me. Q: If you were to go back in time Mrs. V as a senior. Mrs. V with her best friend at their senior prom. Mrs. V and her best friend during their last year of college. 3
Trends Film: The Bye Bye Man By: Mykal Thurney The Bye Bye Man is a new cinematographic experience in theatres. It is the first showing in a long line of horror movies yet to come out this year. The film tells the story of three college students who move into an old campus house, they are then being hunted by The Bye Bye Man. The college students research who this entity is, and they find some stunning results. The movie itself had a very interesting and different idea behind it, but this idea was not executed as well as it could've been. The students learn that the bye bye man is in fact a supernatural entity responsible for possessing multiple people in recent years, causing them to go on killing sprees. The students learn along with this information, that the only way to avoid the entity, is to not think, or say his name. Once he is in your head, he takes control. This whole idea could have been played out much better than it has in the movie. The film was not good, but it wasn t horrible either. I went to go see the movie with a couple of friends, and it was enjoyable. The movie wasn t enjoyable for it s horror aspect, rather, for its humor. Many things went sour when the feature played in front of us. Instead of being horrified, we laughed the whole to when you were in high school, would you have done anything differently? A: I really loved my high school experience. I don't think I would change anything. Maybe I d be nicer to my senior AP Psych teacher. His name was Dr. Burnham, so we all called him "Dr. Hammy". At the time I thought this was fair, since he always mispronounced my name as well. Q: What did you enjoy the most when you were in high school? A: When I was in high school the thing I enjoyed the most was what I assume most of my students enjoy the most- getting to visit with my friends. We were all nerds, and it was awesome. We're still friends to this day. Q: What is the number one piece of advice you would give to students in high school? A: In terms of academics, my best piece of advice for my students is: ASK FOR HELP! YOUR TEACHERS WANT TO HELP YOU, AND WE HATE SEEING YOU FAIL! Non-academically, the one piece of advice I would give students is: Don't get sucked into drama. In five years, you won't care about any of it. Focus on all the positive, beautiful things about being young, and ignore the rest. Time is fleeting. Enjoy it while you have it. Mrs. V and her best friend grown up Mrs. V and her son. Sports & Clubs Soccer Interview with Wendy Ceja by: Daisy Dondiego Q: What change have you seen in the team throughout the 4 years that you have been in soccer? A: I ve seen a major change in soccer; we have improved so much from the day we first began to now. We have a bigger bond. It 4
time due to its absurdity. The movie definitely isn t worthy of picking up on blu ray, but it is worthy of a watch if you are just looking for a good time. Rating: PG-13 January Student of the Month: Christina Mata u by: Mr. Valdivia It is my distinct honor and privilege to announce that class of 2017 senior Christina Mata'u was nominated and selected as Banning High School's Student of the Month for January Christina was recognized at a special awards breakfast on Wednesday morning January 11 in her honor. When you see her around campus please positively acknowledge this grand accomplishment. We are so very proud of her. Wendy Ceja grew within each other and I m glad to be a part of the team. Q: Does being in soccer ever interfere with your academic life? A: Yes, soccer sometimes does interfere with my academic life because we leave early some days for our away games. Q: If there was one thing your team could improve what would it be and why? A: One thing my team could improve would have to be communicating with each other on the field. We sometimes don t let the others know when we got the ball or when we are open for a pass. Q: As a captain, do you believe you guys will make it to CIF this year? A: As a captain, I have faith in my girls, and I believe that we continue to work hard and help one another by motivating each other on and off the field. Q: Do you plan on playing soccer in college? A: Personally I do not plan on playing soccer in college. Wrestling Interview with Jonathan Diaz by: Stephanie Alcarez Q: What is the hardest thing to do while cutting weight? A: The temptation to eat because it s all that s on my mind. Q: How many hours of practice do you put in? A: I put in 3 hours everyday, and on my own I do 1-2 hours every day. Q: What is one thing that you admire about the team as captain? A: The work they put in so we can have a good team. 5
Above: Christina Mata u Below: Christina Mata u and Miss Haiston at the Student of the Month breakfast. Q: Why did you decide to join wrestling? A: I decided to join my freshman year when I was looking for a strength building sport. Q: What are your expectations for this year s team? A: My expectations this year are to prepare new people and to expand our program. Interview with Christina Mata u by: Tia Young Q: What was the best part of your 2016? A: The best of 2016 was when I joined the football team. I had so much fun, and it's my favorite sport. Q: What is something you wish you could change about 2016? A: January 29 when I came to America. I miss my home in the islands (American Samoa). Q: What's something you wish would happen in 2017? A: I wish for both of my parents to watch me walk across the stage as I m getting my diploma. Q: If you were principal at our school, what's something you would change or add? A: If I were principal, I would change our cafeteria into a buffet. Q: What is the dorkiest think you have done so far in 2017? A: The dorkiest thing I have done in 2017 so far is braid my own hair into a necklace.
