It is called a sphere. A globe is a sphere too. It is shaped like the earth. It shows what the earth looks like. It shows where land and water are on the earth. It shows the seven continents. A globe can tell us many, many things about the earth. The earth is much, much larger than a globe. And things on the globe look much smaller than they really are. On the globe, a river may be as long as your finger. But really that river is thousands of miles long. 3

2 Lesson 2 Do this activity. 1. Ask your teacher if you may use the globe. a. Find the seven continents on the globe. The names are in the box. If you can t find them, ask your teacher to help you. 3 Lesson 2 d. Find your continent on the globe again. Find your country on the continent. e. Go to the map on page 4. Find the place where your country is. Put an X there. l On the globe, your continent may look small, but it isn t. It is huge. If you tried to travel over all of it, the trip would take days and days. The earth God made is a big place. On a map or globe we use directions to tell where a place is. The four directions we use are north, south, east, and west. North is at the top of the globe or map. South is at the bottom. East is toward the right. West is toward the left. A direction finder can help you remember the directions and what they mean. Look at the direction finder on this page and memorize the directions. When you look at a globe, think about God. God made the land and the West North South water. God made the mountains. He made the whole earth and everything in it. And He made everything just right. Thank God for the beautiful earth He made. East 5

They may show a whole continent or even the whole earth. Other maps show only a small part of the earth. These may show only one country or a small town. 7

6 Lesson 3 Look at this map. It shows a large part of the earth. This map shows the continent of North America. To show this much land, everything is made to look very small. Front Royal This works well to show a big continent. It works well to show rivers and seas and large lakes. But it does not work well to show smaller things. The town of Front Royal is just a tiny dot. Now look at the map showing a smaller part of the earth. It shows the town community of Front Royal. The map of N Front Royal shows W S E buildings. There are words to tell what the buildings are. 8 Find the hospital. It is on North Shenandoah

7 Lesson 3 Avenue. Does on mean the hospital is right on top of the street? No. On means it is beside the street. In the last lesson you learned the four directions on a globe. We use the same directions for maps. North at the top; South at the bottom; East to the right; West to the left. Color the map of Front Royal. 1. Color the hospital red. North 2. Color the library green. 3. Color Happy Creek blue. West East 4. Color all of the roads yellow. South Circle the correct answer. 5. Happy Creek is east, west of Royal Avenue. 6. 9 Lesson 4 Maps have many little pictures and special lines. The pictures and lines are symbols. A line often shows where there is a road. A picture of a tree may mean there is a forest. Pictures of hills show where the land is hilly or where there are mountains. On this page is another map of Front Royal. This map has symbols on it. Beside the map is a map key. The map key explains what the symbols mean. Can you find the railroad? Where is the park? How many bridges are there? W N S E Without a map key it would be hard to understand some maps. If you are not sure what a symbol means, you can look at the map key. 11

10 Lesson 4 Use the map to do these activities. 3. What street does the railroad cross? 4. Which has a bridge, Main Street or Royal Avenue? 5. Which road is the park on? 6. Bill lives on the south side of 6th Street, just at the western edge of the map. Karen lives on Royal Avenue across from the bookshop. Draw their houses on the map. 7. Bill s family and Karen s family are going to the gazebo to sing for the people passing on the streets and sidewalks. Who has farther to go to the gazebo? Do this activity. 8. Draw a map in the box on page 13. Draw the road that goes past your house. Then draw your house and yard. Make sure you draw trees where they should be. Draw the barn if you have one. If there is a river or creek, draw that too. When you are finished drawing your map, make a key to show what the symbols mean. If you have time, you may color your map. 12
