DUE at the END of class, WEDNESDAY, January 20 th We ve spent a couple class days reviewing figurative language, and we ve closely read one poem together. Demonstrate your understanding of argyle socks, and practice your close reading and insightful thinking on your own. First identify the figurative language terms definitions (A). Then apply the terms to the indicated topics (B). Then read and THINK ABOUT the poems in this little packet. (C) Think about their moldy content (what s happening in them, why it s happening), and think about what their purpose might be. (A) - Figurative Language :: Definitions As we discussed in class, figurative language is a creative, interesting, thoughtful, and effective way to use the language. Remind yourself of each of the terms we ve discussed. Alliteration Hyperbole Imagery Metaphor Onomatopoeia Personification A) words that sound like what they mean B) detailed, descriptive language puts a picture or image in your head C) repetition of sounds at the beginning of words near each other D) compares two things using like or as E) an exaggeration F) compares two things turns one thing into the other Simile G) talking about an inanimate object (a thing) as if it s a human: giving it human characteristics, emotions, or behaviors

2 (B) - Figurative Language :: Application > Figurative language should make us stop and think about things (in a good way). > Figurative language should make us look at things differently. > Figurative language plays with the language. With those ^ things in mind, apply the indicated figurative language term to the following topics. ** Be prepared to explain & defend what you write in other words, you should have thoughtful and logical reasons behind your comparisons. (Don t just try to be funny.) 3 CHECK 1 The night was creeping on the ground; She crept and did not make a sound Until she reached the tree, and then She covered it, and stole again 5 Along the grass beside the wall. I heard the rustle of her shawl 1 As she threw blackness everywhere Upon the sky and ground and air, And in the room where I was hid: 10 But no matter what she did To everything that was without, She could not put my candle out. So I stared at the night, and she Stared back solemnly at me. James Stephens 1. In stanza 3, lines 6-7, the poet talks about a shawl what do you think he means? Certainly he doesn t mean that the night is literally wearing a fabric scarf/blanket around her shoulders 2. Which poetic device is used often throughout this poem? 3. Go back to the poem, and underline examples of this poetic device. Did you? of course! 4. What is the effect of using this device? In other words, how does it make you think of or see the night differently? 1 shawl a fabric scarf/blanket

4 Fueled 1 Fueled by a million man-made wings of fire 5 the rocket tore a tunnel through the sky and everybody cheered. Fueled only by a thought from God 10 the seedling urged its way through the thickness of black and as it pierced the heavy ceiling of the soil-- 15 and launched itself up into outer space no one even 20 clapped. Now interpret the poem: why do you think those two things are being compared? What do you think the poet is trying to say? What point does she want to make?

5 The following is a poem by the magnificent mind of J.R.R. Tolkien. Do you know what else he has written? yes, nope Read it once to get a feel for it, then answer the questions on the back. The Mewlips J.R.R. Tolkien 1 The shadows where the Mewlips dwell Are dark and wet as ink, And slow and softly rings their bell, As in the mire you sink. 5 You sink into the slime who dare To knock upon their door, While down the grinning gargoyles stare And noisome waters pour. Beside the rotting river-strand 10 The drooping willows weep, And gloomily the gorcrows 2 stand Croaking in their sleep. Over the Merlock Mountains, a long and weary way, In a moldy valley where the trees are gray, 15 By a dark pool's borders without wind or tide, Moonless and sunless, the Mewlips hide. The cellars where the Mewlips sit Are deep and dank and cold, With a single sickly candle lit; 20 And there they count their gold. Their walls are wet, their ceilings drip; Their feet upon the floor Go softly with a squish flap-flip, As they sidle 3 to the door. 25 They peep out slyly through a crack Their feeling fingers creep, And when they've finished, in a sack Your bones they take to keep. Beyond the Merlock Mountains, a long and lonely road, 30 Through the spider-shadows and the marsh of Tode, And through the wood of hanging trees and the gallows weed, You go to find the Mewlips - and the Mewlips feed. 2 gorcrows - a fictional species of birds, invented by Tolkien, only mentioned in passing in The Hobbit - they are foul crows, who croak in their sleep 3 sidle to move around in a quiet, secretive manner, often shuffling a little, or moving slightly from side to side

6 1. The Mewlips uses ALLITERATION frequently (at least once in each stanza) and effectively. Go back to the poem and underline every example of ALLITERATION you find. How many times was ALLITERATION used? 2. I found two other figurative language devices used. Go back to the indicated lines, and see if you can identify the device used. lines 1-2: line 10: line 19: line 29: 3. What is this poem about? What happens in this poem? 4. Do you like this poem? Why or why not? 5. You may draw a Mewlip (counting gold or your bones (!!)), if you like.
