You ll find all the new stuff right here... cumberlandlibrary.org/new-stuff LOCAL ARTIST KATHARINE LAPRE Local artist Katharine Lapre of Cumberland, will be exhibiting a number of her photographs in the Hayden Art Gallery during the month of January. The exhibit will be accessible on the second floor whenever the library is open. Lapre, a life-long resident of Cumberland, started exploring photography in 2012 after joining a Facebook group (Organic Photography Group), which was founded by Rachel Sykes of England. Rachel has been an inspiration and a big help. Besides working a full-time job, she always spares time to help the photographers in the group, shares Lapre when thinking about Sykes as mentor. She uses both DSLR and point-and-shoot cameras to take her photos and has been offering primarily canvases and framed prints for sale. When asked about what inspires Lapre in the area of photography, she points to the Organic Photography Group on Facebook and Instagram. From there, I always look for the unique when I am out and about. I'm always trying different angles. Sometimes, it's about being in the right place at the right time or being given a once in a lifetime chance to photograph something. It becomes an addiction. You might want to consider OpenOffice, a suite of programs by Apache that mirrors those in Microsoft Office. OpenOffice has alternatives to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access, and more. The suite is both an open-source product, which means it is designed with the intention of making available free to anyone who would like to use it, and a project, which means it is constantly being upgraded and improved. It is available for use on the Windows, Apple ios, Linux, and Solaris platforms. It also works transparently with a variety of file formats, which means it can view files created in Microsoft Office and users of OpenOffice can save files in those same formats. 6 The Back Page Everyone needs friends, and that is true for the Library, too! The Friends of the Cumberland Library is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the Library. The Friends bookstore, located in the Hayden Meeting Center, is open on Thursday evenings from 5:00 7:30 p.m. and Saturday mornings from 9:00 12:30 p.m. The bookstore has been operating for almost 11 years and relies on donations to fill the shelves. Nothing costs more than $1.00. Last year, the Friends bookstore reached their goal of $200,000 in sales! The Friends use the money they raise to purchase our museum passes, furniture, and programs. They also fund our entire Summer Reading Program. They are truly great Friends! Help them out by visiting their store or becoming a member.
