1 THE DAILY GRID Daily Activities at Windrows April 2017 Highlights OFF CAMPUS PERFORMANCE SCHEDULES: Please note that our Off- Campus performance schedules and ticket purchase information are posted in the Mail Room. Performance venues include: The McCarter Driven to Excellence performance package, McCarter Thursday Morning Matinees, McCarter Dance Series, PSO Sunday Classical Series, George Street Playhouse, Metropolitan Opera Live in HD at the Regal Cinema, Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Princeton University Thursday evening Concert Classic Series. Residents are asked to purchase their own tickets and sign-up for transportation in advance at the Front Desk. Please note that a minimum of 10 sign-ups are required for all trips. THE JEWELRY DOCTOR: Jacqueline Yu Earle from the Willow Company will be at the Windrows for her monthly jewelry repair visits. Residents can bring items on a Tuesday and pick them up in 3-5 business days. Tuesday, April 4th from 11:00am- 12:30pm in the Dolley Madison Room. WEDNESDAYS AT WINDROWS: Dr. Karlfried Froehlich presents Celebrating the Reformation After 500 Years. On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther published his 95 Theses against the abuse of indulgences. This year Christian churches all over the world are celebrating this date as a symbol of the start of the Protestant Reformation which profoundly changed the face of Christianity over the centuries. While Protestantism is alive in many forms today, visiting its Lutheran beginnings in the small geographical setting of Luther s life opens up surprising vistas of historic memories lovingly and creatively preserved by many German cities. Take a look at some of them, such as Wittenberg, Eisleben, Eisenach, Worms, and the Wartburg with Dr. Karlfried Froehlich. Join us on Wednesday, April 5th, from 3:00pm-4:00pm in the Woodrow Wilson Gallery. TRADITIONAL SEDER: All Windrows residents are invited to participate in a Passover Seder on Tuesday, April 11 th (the second night of Passover). There is space for up to 80 residents, we unfortunately cannot accommodate outside guests. Entry to the Nassau Room for this event starts at 5:00 p.m. The Seder will begin at 5:30. Sign-ups and admission tickets will be available at the Front Desk from March 20 th - April 7th.

Please contact Paula Fishman at or WEDNESDAYS AT WINDROWS: Poetry Day Celebration. April is National Poetry Month. It was inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world with schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers, and poets celebrating poetry s vital place in our culture. Please join us on Wednesday, April 12 th in the Wilson Gallery at 3:00pm to hear our Windrows poets recite their own or favorite poems for your entertainment and edification. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.... SHOFUSO JAPANESE HOUSE & GARDENS TRIP: Shofuso Japanese House and Garden is a traditional-style Japanese house and nationally-ranked garden in West Fairmount Park that reflects the history of Japanese culture in Philadelphia. Shofuso hosts 30,000 visitors each year from more than 20 different countries. Our visit will include a tea tasting program, and a 30 minute talk about the history of tea, after which visitors will prepare and serve matcha tea to each other while learning the basic actions of tea ceremony. Please note that visitors will be required to remove their shoes before entering the tea house. It is recommended that everyone wear socks, and they provide special shoe coverings for anyone unable to remove their footwear. Please join us Thursday, April 13th from 11:45am-4:30pm. COCKTAIL PARTY: Join us on Friday, April 14 th for a Cocktail Party with Broadway songs both old & new performed by Elaine Harned from 4:00pm-5:00pm in the Living Room. Elaine is a vocalist who studied with Lindsey Christiansen at Westminster Choir College, an experienced organist, a member of the Westminster Choir, and a resident of Cranbury. SWING-A-LONG WITH BILL BAUER: Come sing along, and swing along, with the Windrows Warblers as they conduct a nostalgic whistle stop tour through the Swing Era in honor of the centennial of recorded jazz. No need for an engineer or a conductor, as Bill Bauer leads from the keyboard. There ll be no need to take the "A" train: you ll be singing up a storm right here in our Living Room. 3 WEDNESDAYS AT WINDROWS: Historian, Ken Henke presents Princeton and its Seminary. Princeton, New Jersey, with its university and seminary and many other institutions of learning and research, is a very special place. A few years ago Princeton Theological Seminary celebrated its 200 th anniversary. This illustrated talk will explore the story behind Princeton Seminary, how it came to be located in this old colonial New Jersey town, and how it grew over the years. In the course of telling its history we will also learn a little of the lives of some of the fascinating people who have been a part of the seminary s long history. Join us Wednesday, April 19th from 3:00pm-4:00pm in the Woodrow Wilson Gallery. TRIP TO HINDU MANDIR (TEMPLE): The Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha, also known at BAPS, is one of the largest U.S. Hindu temples located in Robbinsville, NJ. The Mandir was initiated to accommodate a growing Hindu population in New Jersey and has become a religious place of pilgrimage. The New Jersey structure is made of Italian marble -- more than 13,000 stones worth, which traveled first from Italy to India where it received traditional carvings from craftsmen before making the journey to New Jersey. WOODROW WILSON GALLERY ARTIST S TALK: Resident Photographer Mike Nathan will discuss the works in his exhibit Enduring Images: A Decade of Photography by Mike Nathan currently on view in the Woodrow Wilson Gallery. He will share some of his work processes as well as tell us about some of the exquisite locations he has had the opportunity to photograph around the world. PRINCETON FESTIVAL OVERTURE PROGRAM: Beginning on Sunday, April 23, 2017, The Princeton Festival will present a series of four Sunday afternoon lectures with extensive use of video illustrations, entitled Enjoying Opera. These lectures will be held in the Woodrow Wilson Gallery on Sunday afternoons, April 23, 30, May 7 and May 21, 2017 from 3:00-4:00 PM. The program schedule is as follows:

4 April 23, 2017, 3:00 4:00 PM Session 1: Divas and Divos This session will examine comparative performances of the same arias by several opera singers of different eras. April 30, 2017, 3:00 4:00 PM Session 2: Verdi s Comic Operas This session will examine Verdi s two comedies, his second opera, Un Giorno di Regno (often called King for a Day), and his last opera, Falstaff. May 7, 2017, 3:00 4:00 PM Session 3: French Comic Operas This session will explore early and later French comic opera including Platee by John Philippe Rameau and La Belle Helene by Jacques Offenbach. May 21, 2017, 3:00 4:00 PM Session 4: Fidelio This session will focus on Beethoven s Fidelio, which will be presented by The Princeton Festival at the McCarter in June. All participants in this lecture series at will receive a syllabus with background materials related to the lectures and a synopsis of the opera Fidelio. As part of this Program, a Resource Kit, which will include a DVD and CD of Beethoven s opera Fidelio, a Libretto of Fidelio, and copies of a synopsis of Fidelio, will be presented to the Windrows Library. Presenter: Harold Kuskin has been an opera lover and Metropolitan Opera subscriber for over 40 years, a Backstage Tour Guide at the Metropolitan Opera House for 15 years, and has presented many opera programs at Senior Communities as part of The Princeton Festival s Overture Program, and at the Princeton Senior Resource Center in The Evergreen Program. WEDNESDAYS AT WINDROWS: Jeffrey T. Apter MD. presents Memory and Aging: What s Normal and What s Not.
