10 Rock N Roll Hall Of Famers Blue Coupe To Play Mood Fest Stage -R O Donnell If you believe Ogdensburg is a city of past triumphs and events, please reconsider. What was once a booming industrial metropolis many decades ago is finally experiencing a unique and noteworthy cultural renaissance. Thanks in part to a very determined group of entrepreneurs, artists and musicians, all dedicated to presenting creative venues to strengthen community and commerce in the North Country, Ogdensburg is becoming a bonafide place of destination once again. A good example of their latest glistening draw is the city s annual MOOD fest (Music on the Oswegatchie Delta). A sensational three day musical jubilee complete with artisans, venders and riverside tent camping, founded by gifted local instrumentalist and impresario Pat Duffy, this scene will be presenting some pretty stellar acts this year. Along with local talent teen pop artist Allexa Hooper and National recording artist Nick LaDuc to sensational North Country bands such as Waydown Wailers, Annie in the Water, and Switch, MOOD Fest will present on July 18th rock legends Blue Coupe. The angry orphans of Blue Öyster Cult and the Alice Cooper group, Blue Coupe is an iconic tribe of rock stars. Showcasing Rock n Roll Hall of Famer Dennis Dunaway alongside Blue Öyster Cult s multi-instrumentalist Joe Bouchard and his brother, extraordinary drummer/percussionist Albert Bouchard, Blue Coupe is a musical tour de force. With classics such as School s Out, Under My Wheels and Astronomy (covered by Metallica) Joe, Albert and Dennis have sold over 15 million albums and have been awarded over 30 gold and platinum records worldwide. Throughout the 70s, Blue Öyster Cult opened shows for theatrical shock rockers the Alice Cooper group on a record-breaking tour that included venues from outdoor festivals to sold-out arenas eventually gracing the cover of Forbes magazine as the highest grossing tour of the year. As Alice Cooper became world famous with hits such as No More Mr. Nice Guy and Elected, Blue Öyster Cult continued with their own sold-out tours rocking hits such as (Don t Fear) The Reaper and Burnin For You. All these amazing musical accomplishments have served these superstars of Blue Coupe very well indeed. Blue Öyster Cult was playing a stadium in Cleveland, recalls BOC drummer Albert Bouchard, And the gig was dubbed the World Series of Rock. Right? Huge. It was enormous, staged in this mammoth arena and we were on the bill with Rod Stewart and Aerosmith, etc., great, wonderful. And Steven Tyler and I are hanging out during the day. He s a multi-instrumentalist and just loves the drums. So we re talking drums, and he s playing and I m playing. Actually, we got to know each other from when Aerosmith opened for us on our first tour. It was just one of those great periods. So anyway, that night, I m onstage in this giant stadium, its packed and I m playing and I look up in the balcony, and way up there in the clouds was some spec of a person in the third row dancing away, you know, just grooving to the beat. They re just bopping away, me and this tiny ant of a person, we re just connected by the music and I never wanted it to stop. I wanted to play forever. I wanted it to never end so that person and I could go on incessantly. Because I knew if I stopped, he d stop and that would be the end of it. That would be the end of that precious moment that we shared. It was one of the greatest moments of my life. Honestly. One of the greatest. Blue Coupe has certainly learned from their past triumphs as evident with their highly acclaimed release Tornado on the Tracks, a multiple Grammy-nominated album featuring Robby Krieger (legendary guitarist for The Doors) on the hit single Angel s Well. Blue Coupe s second album, Million Miles More, features special guest stars Alice Cooper, Tish and Snooky from Manic Panic, Ross the Boss from Manowar and the Dictators, Buck Dharma from Blue Öyster Cult and Goldy McJohn from Steppenwolf. Their latest single Hallow s Grave, which features steamy vocals by rock veteran Alice Cooper, has recently been submitted for Grammy consideration. We needed a name, explains Albert, concerning the group s tag, Dennis was doing a gig and needed a drummer so I volunteered and then my brother Joe climbed onstage and we rocked the house. Anyway, it seemed a good combo so we were booked as a trio by popular demand and that, too, was a great success. Then we were opening for Alice Cooper and it was time for a name so it was kind of a pun really, Blue, for our Blue Öyster Cult glory days and Coupe for Dennis and his Alice Cooper days. So it was Blue Coupe thereafter and it was a perfect way to pay tribute to the past, present, and future with a bit of a wink. Their presence at the third annual MOOD Fest is certainly cause for celebration. The stage show, which assembles a wall of sound guaranteed to make Rock n Roll waves across the Oswegatchie Delta, has to be experienced to be believed. This promises to be a big concert sound experience mixed with the great outdoors of the North Country. Already being hailed as a must see and hear to be believed experience, Blue Coupe headlining MOOD Fest is another example of the vastly changing times here in the resurgent city of Ogdensburg, New York. It is truly a community inspired initiative that has produced a 10th Anniversary Best of lineup that includes the following upcoming performances: Tuesday, June 30: Americana Night with Amy Helm (2013) Tuesday, July 7: World Rock Night with Rusted Root (2013) Tuesday, July 14: Celtic Night with Jubilee GAME CONNOISSEUR Through STEM Education Our Future Is Bright ---DR. ANTHONY BETRUS THE GAME CONNOISSEUR PROFESSOR OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY AND ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP, SUNY POTSDAM I was reminded recently that when I was growing up my mother would routinely push me and my brothers out the back door and state simply go play. We knew to come back for dinner, but it was a solid 2-3 hours of outdoor time for us every afternoon, and more on weekends. And there was no choice, it just was, and not just in the summer, but in the winter too. We always managed to fi nd something to do, and we were not afraid to experiment or dabble and try new things. This was the essence of play, and it is something kids and adults alike need in their life. Games, for their part, have rules, and inasmuch as you can change, bend, or break the rules you are playing. It is through play that we build new knowledge, strengthen relationships, and ultimately grow. Some examples of semi-structured play spaces include Legos, Minecraft, Robotics, and K NEX. These activities, and others like them, offer a sandbox, virtual or otherwise, that allows for free-form making. And it is through these creative problem solving spaces (often called maker spaces) that we are seeing the rise of a new movement: STEM Education. The concept of STEM Education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is old, but the emphasis is new. And it comes at the same time we see an increasing emphasis on standardized tests to assess fundamental knowledge and skills. These two (fundamentals and STEM) are not necessarily at odds with each other. Fundamental skills in reading, writing, math, and science form the foundation for critical thinking and problem solving activities. In some cases there have been additions to the STEM acronym, most recently the addition of an A for Arts, forming the term STEAM Education. This further emphasizes creativity in the problem solving process, and while not as well-known, it is catching on. Eventually standardized testing will be replaced with continuous assessment (you heard it here fi rst). By that I mean that we will know on an ongoing basis, and with relative precision, what skills a student has mastered, not just with an end-of-year assessment, but through continuous assessment. There are technology tools out there that already do this, and as they mature and become more accessible, we will see a gradual fading of one-off testing. This will, in turn, allow for more and better STEM (STEAM) teaching, and ultimately unleash new generations of critical thinkers and problem solvers. And, in the end, it really comes down the the same skills that our parents knew we needed, and that was to get out there and play. I guess Mom really did know best, Riots (formerly Enter The Haggis) (2008) Tuesday, July 21: New Orleans Night with The Dirty Dozen Brass Band (2007) Tuesday, July 28: American Rock Night with Lukas Nelson & P.O.T.R. 18 We Like To RIDE And Have Fun -Dawn Fontaine F.X. Caprara Harley-Davidson General Merchandise Manager The year was 1981 and a group of 13 members, including Willie G. Davidson, bought Harley-Davidson back from AMF. The previous decade had seen Japanese motorcycle manufacturers flood the market with bikes they were selling below market value. Even though the outlook was bleak, the visionaries within Harley understood that with the proper leadership, there was hope. During the summer of 1982, a group of executives began a cross-country motorcycle ride as a way of reconnecting with dealers and customers. The idea of a club that promotes the biker lifestyle which is simply to ride motorcycles and to have fun doing it - evolved. So it was that the Harley Owners Group, commonly referred to as H.O.G., was born in In less than ten years, membership quickly grew to 90,000, by the year 2000 it soared to over 500,000 members, and today there are over one million H.O.G. members across the globe. The benefits of being a member of H.O.G. are many safe motorcycling mentorship, insurance discounts, exclusive products, behindthe-scenes at many motorcycle rallies, HOG Magazine, Roadside Assistance, and of course organized rides. Many members credit H.O.G. with their seeing more of the world, making lifelong friendships, and having lots of fantastic memories to tell their family and loved ones. This year, on June 27th and 28th, the Harley Owners Group and Harley-Davidson continue the tradition with the World Ride. It s more than just another motorcycle ride it s a call to action. It s a chance to break from the same old routine and take back a piece of your freedom. Mark it on your calendar, plot your route on the map, ride with friends, our own local H.O.G. chapter, or alone, and then share it using #HDworldride in your social media posts. For more information about this event, and about H.O.G., you can go online to: ridefree.harley-davidson. com/worldride, or simply come on over to F.X. Caprara Harley-Davidson. Let s show the world what we re made of. 18 Northern New York Harley Owners Group The 5th Annual Made in New York Festival - Saturday, July 4 The Made in New York festival was created four years ago in 2011 as a principal fund raising event for Meals on Wheels of Greater Watertown. The foundation of the event as it is designed is to promote a buy local initiative. Since its inception the festival has raised over $ 20,000 for the Meals on Wheels program. The event has now upwards to 100 agricultural, farm and home based businesses offering products for sale that are exclusively Made in New York. In addition to its home grown products music has always played a significant role in the festival event. Throughout the day 14 bands from across NYS play non- stop continuously from two stages. This year s event promises to be the largest of its history with two exciting additions to this year s event. The NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets through its Taste NY statewide initiative will be the co-presenting sponsor of this year s event. We couldn t be more pleased to be part of something statewide said Donna White Executive Director for Meals for Wheels. We have all worked hard building this event from scratch and now to join the exciting schedule of Taste NY events is truly an honor. Taste NY events promote New York s top-notch agricultural products including produce, cheese, yogurt, maple products and beer wine, cider and spirits. This year s festival feature attraction is the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundations We must never forget 911 mobile exhibit. The mobile exhibit is traveling across the country so that no one ever forgets the events of September 11, The exhibit is expected to arrive by midmorning on the day of the event Saturday July 4th from Virginia. A large motorcade will assemble at BOCES on NYS Route 3 to meet the truck and exhibit. The motorcade will then provide an honor escort for the exhibit to Madison Barracks where it will be on display through out the daylong event. The motorcade will be made up of over 200 motorcycles from the NNY American Legions Riders, the Combat Veterans motorcycle club, the Red Knights motorcycle clubs from across the state along with various first responder vehicles. The Jefferson County Sheriff s department working with the City of Watertown PD and Sackets Harbor PD, NYS State Police will be providing traffic control and will also participate in the motorcade. As previously mentioned music continues to play a large role in the festival. This year s venue is being billed as NNY s largest outdoor variety music event. This year will feature popular local bands from the surrounding area and kicking off the day will be Sackets Harbor s own Mind the Gap, at 11;00am. Every 45 minutes a new band hits the stage, FFOG, Tommy Gunn, Wagner s Agenda, Waydown Wailers and Annie in the Water all NNY favorites. Musicians with a wide variety of styles and sounds are coming in from across Fourth Coast Entertainment Magazine / June 2015 the state as well. Dirtroad Ruckus, Country and Southern Rock,-Syracuse, Custom Taylor Band, Country Syracuse Teagan and the Tweeds-Rochester, Golden Novak-Syracuse, SIRSY-Albany, Wild Adriatic from Saratoga and back from last year s event Under the Gun from Syracuse. FOR SALE: 1972 Ampeg V4 tube amp head, 260w peak, 100w+ rms paired with a 1968 Marshall cabinet w/ four 12 original Celestion greenback speakers. Original issue Ampeg V4 monster tube guitar amp. Extremely loud with tone that you can vary between sweet jazz tones and heavy overdrive without needing any stomp boxes. The old time Marshall cabinet brings out the full range of tone from the Ampeg head without any effort. You ll never worry about being heard with this amp, you can easily play as loud as you ll ever need to with this amp, always with great tone. Add a pedalboard and you can get just about any sound you want out of this setup at any volume. This is the kind of amp that all those amp-modeling units and expensive boutique amps are trying to copy. You just can t get this kind of sound with a transistor amp, this is the real deal. The Marshall cabinet is a very rare classic. Four 12 inch Celestion G12M Greenback T1511 speakers with all-original Pulsonic cones. The extremely rare gold speaker in the cabinet reportedly signifi es that something special was going on at the factory the day the speakers were made - July 11, The cabinet features all original wiring. This amp was heavily gigged in the 70 s and 80 s and has only come out for an occasional gig since then. These days I just turn it on once in a while to play at home. The amp and speaker cabinet show a lot of wear from hundreds of shows, but the sound is still stellar. Many beers have been spilled down the front over the years, and that just adds to the character. The inside could use a good cleaning too, it s been accumulating dust for many years. But you can plug right in and gig with this amp tomorrow, it s in good working order. Reverb has faded and probably needs a new tube. All of the tubes are still available, so this amp should remain usable for many more years. Photocopy of the original manual for the amp included. Cover for Ampeg head included. Heavy duty speaker cable included (don t try to use a guitar cable for the speaker, you ll fry the cable!). Aftermarket wheels for Marshall cabinet included. 28 28 As The Crowe Flies A Conversation With Rich Robinson ---GARRET K. WOODWARD STAFF WRITER For all the naysayers, rock-n-roll is alive and kicking especially in the hands of Rich Robinson. Guitarist and founding member of The Black Crowes, he has circled the globe for the last 25 years, spreading the mighty word of six-strings gone electric. With the Crowes representing the musical crossroads of Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers and The Band, Robinson is a beacon of light in a modern music industry, where real musicians seem to fall by the wayside in favor of pop idols and instant gratifi cation from a guy onstage hitting buttons on a laptop. And as the Crowes slide into the upper echelon of rock royalty, Robinson himself has mounted a successful solo career. Though his debut release Paper emerged in 2004, it was Through a Crooked Sun (2011) that truly showcased his talents, where each melody stood on its own. Through a Crooked Sun was a breakthrough record for Robinson, who looked at the album as a closure of sorts in his life, where all the baggage of the past was put to song, and fi nally put to rest. With Through a Crooked Sun representing a humbled purpose and clarity, Robinson s latest release, The Ceaseless Sight (2014), is a jubilant call for celebration. Robinson recently discussed his new sense of self, how important having his own band is, and why rock-n-roll is more aggressive and rebellious than ever. Garret K. Woodward: As you get older, do you look forward to your solo project, where you can do your own recording and touring? The CAR-FRESHNER / FX CAPRARA CHRYSLER 2015 Summer Concert Series presented by DPAO and Watertown Savings Bank announces that tickets for the DWIGHT YOAKAM Concert go On-Sale this Monday, June 1st at 7 a.m. To purchase tickets call DPAO at or visit our Web Site at DPAO.ORG. Reserved Tickets for the Dwight Yoakam concert are $59 each while General Admission Tickets are $49 each. General Admission Tickets will also be available at Kinney Drugs Store locations. General Admission Seating is fi rst comefi rst serve behind the Reserved. There will be bleacher seating and a very limited amount of chairs in the General Admission Section. For Handicap Accessible Seating please call DPAO at when tickets go on sale this Monday, June 1st at 7 a.m. Grammy Award Winner Dwight Yoakam will be performing indoors at the McVean Gymnasium at Jefferson Community College on Friday, June 26th at 7 p.m. Beat the rush and sign up now to be a Rich Robinson: Yeah, I think so. The Crowes are the Crowes and it is what it is. We go out there and play these songs, and its fun for us, and it brings people joy. But doing this [solo project] brings me joy, being able to bring my music into a new context, and really get in there and change and shift. GKW: Your last record has a real humbled nature to it, where the new album has this sense of celebration to it. RR: Yeah. It s fi guring out how to let go of all of your shit and move forward, and hopefully that s how it comes across that s what was meant for this record. It s about looking forward, moving into the future and letting go. GKW: Is that sense of clarity being applied to your craft? RR: I feel more free with what I do. With this record, we went into the studio without so many set things. Let s just go in and make a record, go in and do this. I have a couple parts for a song and lets take it in and see what happens, let the energy of the studio take over. GKW: With the current popularity of EDM (electronic dance music), what do you think about an audience that is focused more on gimmicks than on real musicianship? RR: It doesn t worry me kids are going to like what they like. You can t force anyone to like something. The bummer is that they re missing out on something that is far more authentic and sincere. For me, and this is just my opinion, these people get up there and take other people s music and speed it up or slow it down and add really shitty beats and bad lighting to it. GKW: And the audience can lose that SEASON TICKET HOLDER for the DPAO 2015 Summer Concert Series. Call DPAO at and reserve your tickets BEFORE they go on sale to the public! This will provide you with good seats for the CAR-FRESHER / FX CAPRARA CHRYSLER 2015 Summer Concert Series. Popular since the early 1980 s Dwight Yoakam has recorded more than 21 albums and compilations, charted more than 30 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts and sold more than 25 million records! Yoakam has recorded 5 Billboard #1 Albums, 12 Gold Albums and 9 Platinum Albums including the Triple Platinum This Time. Fourth Coast EntErtainmEnt magazine / June 2015 sense of musicianship, where the beauty of live performance is patience and tension as you watch a band jam out. RR: There s no such thing as musicianship [with EDM]. There was this DJ playing after a show recently and I m like, This is what you ve chosen to do? By quantizing the beats per minute, it s just becoming mathematical and there s no ebb and fl ow. They re not picking any deep songs, and even if they did they d fuck it up by putting some shit over it. You re not exposing anyone to anything greater than yourself. It s just really the lowest common denominator. In some ways, I think rock and roll is becoming rebellious again. That getting up there and playing a loud guitar is offensive Main Sponsors include: Car-Freshner Corporation and FX Caprara Chrysler. Presenting Sponsors include: Watertown Savings Bank. Major Sponsors include: M&T Bank, Eagle Beverage Company, Labatt Blue Light, Jreck Subs, Kinney Drugs Foundation, Town of Watertown, Quality Inn & Suites, Ricardo s Restaurant and KeyBank. Proceeds from the Car-Freshner / FX Caprara CHRYSLER 2015 Summer Concert Series Rich Robinson (Credit: Garret K. Woodward) again. It s really interesting to see that the most rebellious music, which was rock and roll on a worldwide scale, when that music came out it created a huge shift, then it became bought out and Who cares? and was in kid s shows and in commercials, and it now has slid into this niche market where nobody really gets it but Who cares? But, there are some rock and roll bands out there, like Rival Sons and Blackberry Smoke, and it is coming back and it is rebellious again. Editor s Note: An acoustic evening with Rich Robinson will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, June 5, in The Gig at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona. Ages 21 and over. Tickets are $15.
