We just recently got around to buying a plaque that proclaims that fact. Thank you, Paul Childers (Thomas Insurance) for helping us out. Royal Players Christmas Production Auditions for A Christmas Story by Philip Grecian will be held Sunday, October 13 at 4:30 p.m. and Monday, October 14, at 7 p.m. at the Royal Theatre, 111 S. Market, Downtown Benton. There will be cold readings from the script. The production, scheduled for December 6-8 and 13-15, is a nonmusical sponsored by David and Nancy Mattingly under the direction of Mark Troillett. There are parts for adults and for children 5-12 years old. Those who audition should be prepared to list any possible conflicts with rehearsal times. Continued page 5. We also received contributions for Benton resident Kali Hardig during the show. Thanks to you and The Royal Theatre, we raised $655 to assist Kali and her family with their medical expenses!! The Royal Players will hold the annual presentation of awards October 5 at 6 p.m. at the Royal Theatre, 111 S. Market Street in Benton. This is a free event to honor our actors, directors, and production staffs. A list of nominees is posted at theroyalplayers.com. Concession stand will be open. Attendees should come as casual or as glam as they desire. In fact, costumes are welcome; they will fit in with some of the presenters who are real characters. The awards are fondly called the Ben-Tonys, but there are participants from Saline, Pulaski, Grand, and Garland counties. We have decided to do away with most of the Thursday night performances, but a few of the musicals may run for three weekends. It s hard to fit a third week into our busy calendar though; assume productions are two weekends (Friday-Sunday) unless there is a special announcement. Come enjoy the Downtown Benton event and finish off with our regular performance of Frankenstein Other Notes November 9 the Royal Players will again host the annual ARCTA meeting. The Arkansas Community Theater Association supports the continuation and expansion of community theaters in Arkansas through networking, resource sharing and education. Members from around the state will be visiting our theater to attend workshops and conduct business. From 9 am to 4 pm. (We will be out in time for Madrigal Feast.) 4 WELCOME TO FOOTLOOSE AUDITIONS! Auditions will begin at 6:00pm Sunday October 20 and 6:00pm Sunday October 21, Call backs (if needed) will be on Tuesday October 22, 2013 at 6:00pm. Footloose scripts will not be available prior to auditions. Auditions are going to be FUN, relatively informal, and will consist of three parts each night. PART I: VOCAL The first part of the process will consist of singing a song of your choosing. Due to the volume of people, you are asked to sing one verse and one chorus only. (roughly 32 bars). Being cut off by the director is not a bad thing! Though musical theatre style songs are standard for auditions, pop songs and country songs would also be appropriate given the nature of Footloose. REMEMBER: Choose something that shows off your best vocal qualities. Things I would prefer not to hear in the auditions: Taylor Swift. Adele. Wicked. The Cup Song (If you walk onstage with a cup, I will take it away.)

5 PART II: DANCE AND MOVEMENT 5 Our choreographer, Jenny Johnston will teach a short combination to be learned as a group and performed in small groups. We will be looking for aptitude in movement and showmanship. Dress appropriately or bring appropriate attire for movement! No open toed shoes! Because of the nature of Footloose, the choreography will most certainly feature free-style dancing, dance features, as well as, solos. If you are particularly good with turns, tricks, floor work, tumbling, across the floor combinations, etc. Let Jenny know! If you have no idea when any of those things are That s okay too! Footloose is NOT a show about professional dancers! REMEMBER: Getting the steps right is secondary to selling the combination. PART III: COLD READING Cold Reading is reading aloud from a script without any rehearsal, practice, or study in advance. Cold reading will commence after the vocal and movement portion of the evening. I will do several rounds of reading and will be making cuts periodically. BEING CUT BEFORE THE END OF THE EVENING IS NOT A BAD THING. It just means I have seen all I need from you for the night. Thanks! -J.Pike From earlier: We welcome any persons ages to audition. From Dramatic Publishing: Humorist Jean Shepherd's memoir of growing up in the midwest in the 1940s follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother, his teacher and even Santa Claus himself, at Higbee's Department Store. The consistent response: "You'll shoot your eye out!" All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here, including the family's temperamental exploding furnace; Scut Farkas, the school bully; the boys' experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie's father winning a lamp shaped like a woman's leg in a net stocking; Ralphie's fantasy scenarios and more. From Susan: Please notice that the age group left out of Footloose is included in the Royal Players production. We can t choose everyone, of course; but there are also plans for some type of musical entertainment during the Christmas season. Stay tuned. We hope to see all of you at the Royal this season.
