1 ARTS UPDATE 20 October 2017 News UC Arts at the Arts Centre It has been a busy last week of semester for 2017! On Sunday, we participated in Beca Heritage Week with the Arts Centre! Both the School of Music and Classics Department were involved in the day, City of Cycles, where the public were encouraged to ditch their cars and come down for a cycle- themed day. There were musical performances in the Great Hall and Classics talks in the Recital Room. It was a successful day and we enjoyed the opportunity to partner with both the Arts Centre and the Christchurch City Council.

2 We had our last New Music Central concert for the year on Monday night, a fantastic concert which featured harpist Anne LeBaron, Mark Menzies and School of Music students.

4 Wednesday night saw a great turn out for the Spring Percussion Concert, led by Music Performance lecturer Justin DeHart. The UC Percussion Ensemble presented a number of different works to a captivated audience. We also have our last Lunchtime Concert for the year this Friday at 1.10pm at the Arts Centre location so make sure you come down and support flutist Shane Harris, who will be performing works by Franc, Ross Edwards and Mark Menzies, as part of the UC Flowers in Spring series! If you are looking for something to do this long weekend, get down to see School of Music Contemporary Voice Tutor Jennine Bailey and UC Arts Centre Manager Naomi Ferguson (van den Broek) performing at the Symposium Vocal Extravaganza on Sunday night. Take a look at the event here: Classics The Classics department will be hosting an Honours research seminar in the Camerata Room in the Arts Centre this Friday October As part of her PACE 495 Internship, which focuses on the 1950s travel diary of Marion Steven, Roswyn Wiltshire will be speaking on 'Meeting Miss Marion Steven: Women, Classics and Classical Archaeology post- Second World War. For many decades Marion Steven was a former member of the Classics dept. and founded the world famous James Logie Memorial Collection of antiquities. All are welcome, so come along and show your support.

5 Global, Cultural and Language Studies The Latin America & Spain Film Festival is a cultural event dedicated to contemporary cinematographic productions from Latin America and Spain. This year s festival will be hosted in Canterbury at the University of Canterbury and the Christchurch Art Gallery. All films at the University of Canterbury are FREE ENTRY and will be shown in the Undercroft 101 Seminar Room. Refreshments will be provided. A great opportunity for everyone at the University to take a break from work and/or study! Jennifer Middendorf, Sarah van Eyndhoven, Kieran Doreen, and Clare Li had designed the storyboard to elicit a range of syntactic constructions from our Bislama language consultant Norma Tor, who returned to Vanuatu after graduating from UC with a Bachelor of Science at the end of 2015 and now works for the Vanuatu government. We are planning to publish the storyboard together with a transcript of the Bislama version of the story provided by Norma, as well as a Samoan version of the story elicited by Vera Hohaus on a recent field trip to Samoa. Norma will assist us with the transcription and analysis of the Bislama version and will be a co- author on our submission to the new journal Semantic Fieldwork Methods. The 2015 LING407 Field Methods class was taught by Dr Heidi Quinn and Dr Vica Papp, and Norma Tor's language consultant work in the course was funded by the College of Arts Pacific Language Consultant Award. 6 Digital Humanities Congratulations to English PhD student Kara Kennedy whose article A Long- Belated Welcome: Accepting Digital Humanities Methods into Non- DH Classrooms was published in the recent Digital Humanities Quarterly as part of a special issue on undergraduate education in Digital Humanities.
