1 The University of Calgary Summer Opera Workshop Jacques Offenbach s Island of Tulipatan Performances: June 25/26 Welcome to the wonderful world of opera performance. The University of Calgary is proud to present Jacques Offenbach s comic opera The Island of Tulipatan. The production dates are June 25-26, 2010 in the Boris Roubakine (in Craigie Hall). This opportunity is open to all University of Calgary Students as well as Community Members. Auditions will be held Sunday, May 30, 2010 between 2:30-7:30pm in E215 of the Music Department. Booking Your Audition visit: to book your time and download the required packet. This opera may be taken as a course for credit (MUPF 221/321) or may be joined for sheer enjoyment! (Deadline for course registration is May 21, 2010; contact operetta@ucalgary.ca with your name & UCID to register.) All cast members (lead and chorus) will need to audition. Vocalists need to prepare the music and script attached to this information sheet or download at A piano accompanist will be available to play for all vocal auditions. Dress rehearsals will be June from 5:00-10:00pm. Performances will be on June 25-26; Call time will be 6:00pm for the 8:00pm performance. ~ A rehearsal schedule will be given out so you know exactly when you need to be there and the location of the rehearsal. ~ There is a $50 fee to participate in the show to cover costume and script rental. If you are taking the show for university credit the fee is only $20. (All need to provide own make-up and costume footwear.) 2 The Island of Tulipatan - Plot Synopsis U of C Operetta Company Page 1 of 1 05/03/2010 "How do you solve a problem like Hermosa?" That's what her parents ask at the beginning of the delightfully loopy Island of Tulipatan. A refined girl of 18 should be sewing or practicing the piano, not outside shooting guns and dreaming about all things military. Meanwhile, the prince, Alexis, also 18, an unusually gentle young man, is far more interested in ornithology than manly pursuits, like fighting. How will these diametrically opposed lovers ever hook up? Oh, that's only the beginning. Just wait till you see how convoluted l'amour can get on the remote Island of Tulipatan, where nobody is who they appear to be. The warlike Duke of Tulipatan, Cockatoo XXII, is annoyed at the effeminacy of his son, Alexis. The Duke's seneschal, Romboidal, is likewise exasperated at the tomboy behaviour of his daughter, Hermosa. A crisis occurs when the two young people fall in love and want to get married. Alexis goes off to ask his father's permission, and Romboidal's wife, Theodorine, takes Hermosa aside and confesses that Hermosa is, in fact, a boy. She has kept her son's true sex a secret all these years because she was afraid he would be sent away to war and be killed. Theodorine points out that marriage to Prince Alexis under these circumstances is quite out of the question. Hermosa's disappointment is cut short when Romboidal, still believing Hermosa is a girl, confesses that Alexis is in fact the Duke's third daughter. He had deceived the Duke because he thought it would kill him to learn that his third attempt to produce a son and heir had failed. Alexis overhears this confession and goes off to change into a dress. Hermosa changes into a soldier's uniform. They meet up, and the inevitable happens. They go off together to the church. The Duke returns from lunch and is confused when the union of his son with his seneschal's daughter is opposed by both Romboidal, who believes they are both girls, and Theodorine, who believes they are both boys. But it is too late - the young couple return from church as man (Hermosa) and wife (Alexis). Confessions all round, and the Duke decides it is not too late for him to get married again and have another go at producing a son. Oh, mon dieu!
