1 FOLK AROUND THE COAST - JULY 2011 G day Folks, FOLK FROM FURTHER FIELDS While I m still in reminiscing mode, I thought I d share the following gem, taken from the August 2000 edition of this newsletter: It was a cold, wet, miserable night at Port Noarlunga and there was a gale that you could lean against blowing in off the ocean. Not the sort of night that you d expect to find many people at the folk club. There weren t at first, but the numbers steadily increased as the night wore on. Not just locals either, people from as far afield as Fulham Gardens, Prospect, Mt Barker, and so on... Real diehard folkies who had braved the horrible weather conditions to come and join in the session. You d wonder what it is that brings people out of their nice warm homes on such a winter s night. Could it be the music and the yarns? Maybe there s not much on the telly. Perhaps they ve heard that the prices of drinks at the RSL haven t gone up yet (what GST?). Come to think of it, everyone s pretty friendly there it s usually like that. They seem to enjoy each other s company and have quite a bit of fun singing songs and playing a few tunes together. It s never the same from one week to the next either different friends, different songs, different poems. One thing that doesn t seem to change much is when they get there they always wish they could stay a bit longer. Fascinating thing, this folk culture. It was a cold, wet night at Port Noarlunga but nobody was miserable at the folk club. 2 (Continued from page 1) We re going to continue having a (well-earned) break from concerts at the Folk Club in July to give the session players a bit more of a go and me a bit more of a rest. Concerts will resume in August with Fred Smith & Liz Frencham. That doesn t mean there s nothing happening though! 4 FLEURIEU FOLK FESTIVAL NEWS FLEURIEU FOLK AT THE ALMOND BLOSSOM FESTIVAL SAT 30 TH & SUN 31 ST JULY 10am to 5pm We will have an information/merchandise stall at the Almond Blossom Festival on both days and we need some volunteers to help with the running of the stall, handing out flyers, promoting our festival, selling raffle tickets, etc. It would also be great to have a few musicians there to play (acoustically) and give patrons a sample of what to expect at the folk festival please contact Pete if you d like to help out. SUNDAY 31 ST JULY 1pm to 4.30pm Remember last year s mighty folk session at the Almond Blossom Festival? Well, the Willunga Football Club has invited us to use their clubrooms again for a folk session and we d like to get lots of musicians, singers & patrons along from all the local folk sessions for a big warm-up session for the Festival and let people see how great the music is! FFF 2011 MAJOR RAFFLE This is one of our major fundraisers for the festival and we need your help to sell tickets. There are $2000 worth of fabulous prizes to be won and it s still only $2 per ticket! 5 FINANCIAL STATEMENT 1/12/10 TO 31/5/11 This statement shows the current financial status of the South Coast Folk Club and the income and expenditure during the past 6 months since the previous statement was published. We are a not for profit community organization and we believe it is important that club supporters know where their money is being spent. Raffle takings for this period were down approx $400 compared with the same period last year, which is a concern as we are reliant on the weekly raffle for most of the Club s income and can only continue to fund our activities while the raffle is well supported. Fortunately, the sponsorship grant for concerts at the Club from the City of Onkaparinga ensured that we were able to present a first-rate concert series in 2010/2011. Presenting high-quality International performers in concert at the Club is a costly exercise and without this sponsorship we would not have been able to continue our concerts this year, so we thank them for that and are hopeful of obtaining their continued support. 7 An evening of Scottish Fiddle featuring visiting US artist, Barbara McOwen, with Catherine Fraser and the Adelaide Scottish Fiddle Club Barbara McOwen began playing fiddle for Scottish dancing in 1971, the same year she gained her B.A. in Music from the University of California, Berkeley. She currently leads Tullochgorum, a Scottish country dance band based in Boston. Barbara is also co-founder of the Boston Scottish Fiddle Club and the New Hampshire Strathspey & Reel Society, and directed the Boston Harbor Scottish Fiddle School until her resignation in Scots/Australian fiddler Catherine Fraser, together with renowned accompanist Duncan Smith, are world-class performers and teachers, and present the music of Scotland with finesse, passion and sensitivity. Constantly in demand for concerts and workshops and acknowledged for their ability to combine a high level of technical skill with a rare depth of emotional expression, Catherine and Duncan have gained the respect of audiences and students alike. 10 LAUGHTER - A Folkie s Cure A dad buys a lie detector robot which slaps people when they lie. He decides to test it at dinner. 'Son, where were you today?' Son says 'at school dad.' Robot slaps the son! 'Ok, I watched a DVD at my mates!' 'What DVD?' 'Toy story.' Robot slaps the son again! 'Ok, it was a porno' cries the son. 'What! When I was your age I didn't know what porn was' says the dad. Robot slaps the dad! Mum laughs 'HaHaHa! He's certainly your son.' Robot slaps the mum! thanks to Chris for this one!.... HEY - WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME THIS EARLIER!!! Well I should have figured it out sooner. It's the shampoo I use in the shower! When I wash my hair, the shampoo runs down my whole body. Printed very clearly on the shampoo label it reads: "FOR EXTRA VOLUME AND BODY." I have binned the shampoo and I am going to start using Dawn dish detegent. It s label reads: "DISSOLVES FAT THAT IS OTHERWISE DIFFICULT TO REMOVE." Problem solved! Geeze! It sure pays to read the label! thanks to Mal for this one!

11 LAUGHTER - A Folkie s Cure cont d THE DENTIST The dentist pulls out a numbing needle to give the man a shot. 'No way! No needles. I hate needles' the patient said.. The dentist starts to hook up the nitrous oxide and the man objects. 'I can't do the gas thing The thought of having the gas mask on is suffocating me!' The dentist then asks the patient if he has any objection to taking a pill. 'No objection,' the patient says. 'I'm fine with pills.' The dentist then returns and says, 'Here's a Viagra tablet.' The patient says, 'Wow! I didn't know Viagra worked as a painkiller!' It doesn't' said the dentist, 'but it's going to give you something to hold onto when I pull your tooth. thanks to Chris for this one!. An Irish Tradition... Paddy had long heard the stories of an amazing family tradition. It seems that his father, grandfather and great-grandfather had all been able to walk on water on their 18th birthday. On that special day, they'd each walked across the lake to the pub on the far side for their first legal drink. So when Paddy's, 18th birthday came around, he and his pal Mick, took a boat out to the middle of the lake, Paddy, stepped out of the boat...and nearly drowned! Mick just barely managed to pull him to safety. Furious and confused, Paddy, went to see his grandmother. 'Grandma,' he asked, "Tis me 18th birthday, so why can't I walk 'cross the lake like me father, his father, and his father before him?" Granny looked deeply into Paddy's, troubled brown eyes and said, "Because ye father, ye grandfather and ye great-grandfather were all born in December, when the lake is frozen, and ye were born in August, ya ****** idiot!"
