A judge has allowed his jury to witness a séance to establish the guilt or innocence of the accused. James MacGregor, a well-known medium, is on trial for the murder of his brother. This séance is James last opportunity to prove his innocence. Amidst the candles and velvet, he attempts to connect with the jury and the spirit world. Expect a journey of magic, crime and human fragility. Is James a charlatan, or a man who has found the truth? Directed by multi-award winning magician and theatre-maker Ross MacKay. Thu 22 February 14 THE NATIONAL THEATRE (ENCORE) Cat on a Hot Tin Roof By Tennessee Williams Directed by Benedict Andrews Tennessee Williams twentieth century masterpiece Cat on a Hot Tin Roof played a strictly limited season in London s West End in Following his smash hit production of A Streetcar Named Desire, Benedict Andrews thrilling revival (New York Times) stars Sienna Miller alongside Jack O Connell and Colm Meaney. 4 eg...opera on Screen...Ballet on Screen ROYAL OPERA (LIVE) Tosca From its strident opening chords Puccini s Tosca conjures up a world of political instability and menace. Jonathan Kent s production captures the dangerous political turbulence of Rome in 1800 as the Chief of Police, Scarpia ruthlessly pursues and tortures enemies of the state. His dark, demonic music contrasts with the expansive melodies of the idealistic lovers, Tosca and Cavaradossi, who express their passion in sublime arias, including Vissi d arte and E lucevan le stelle. Dan Ettinger conducts a star cast led by Adrianne Pieczonka, Joseph Calleja and Gerald Finley. ROYAL OPERA (ENCORE) Carmen Georges Bizet s Carmen is one of the most famous operas in the entire art form with music such as Habanera and the Toreador Song becoming classics. The opera s heady combination of passion, sensuality and violence is given a fresh point of view in Barrie Kosky s highly physical production. His Carmen is a far from traditional version, incorporating music written by Bizet for the score but not usually heard, and giving a new voice to the opera s endlessly fascinating central character. Sunday 11 March 2pm 17, 10 for under 15s THE ROYAL BALLET (LIVE) Bernstein Centenary The Royal Ballet celebrates the centenary of Leonard Bernstein s birth with a programme from choreographers Wayne McGregor, Liam Scarlett and Christopher Wheeldon. Leonard Bernstein was one of the first classical composers in America to achieve both popular and critical acclaim. He was eclectic in his sources drawing on jazz and modernism, the traditions of Jewish music and the Broadway musical and many of his scores are remarkably well suited to dance. The programme includes two world premieres by Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor and Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon, marking each artist s first foray into Bernstein. At the heart of the programme is the first revival of Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett s The Age of Anxiety, created in 2014 to Bernstein s soul-searching Second Symphony. 5 eg... Music...Music The Outside Track The Railsplitters Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys RANT Equipped with fiddle, accordion, harp, guitar, flute, a few step-dance routines and deliciously rich vocals, these five musicians dove-tail perfectly their sound a marriage of Canadian, Scottish and Irish music and song that has been rapturously received around the world. Hailing from Scotland, Ireland, Cape Breton and Vancouver, the band members are united by a love of traditional music and a commitment to using it as a foundation for new work. Outside Track is Norah Rendel, Mairi Rankin (Beolach), Ailie Robertson (Live Ireland Winner, BBC Young Trad Finalist), Fiona Black (BBC Fame Academy Winner), and Cillian O Dalaigh. Thu 25 January 15 Straight out of the Colorado Rockies, this award-winning band plays with confidence, grace and a real depth of character. They draw influences from all of the greats from Bill Monroe and Earl Scruggs to their contemporaries. Each member contributes song-writing, powerful vocals, great harmonies and breathtaking instrumentals to give this band its amazing range. Their debut album showcased influences from roots/americana, country, 50s doo-wop, modern pop and rock n roll. brilliantly uplifting bluegrass that pays its dues but is resoundingly modern Spiral Earth They have the kind of raw power that can raise mountains Acoustic Magazine Thu 1 February Blazing hot Michigan roots ensemble Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys return with their rapid-fire picking, stop-and-go bass lines, and steamy vocals from the leading lady. Last year they took the Shetland Folk Festival and HebCeltFest by storm and headlined at Celtic Connections. Mandolinist Joshua Rilko picks with precision then slams into speedy power chords, dobro player Mark Lavengood matches melody lines with quick responses, laid over PJ George s bass lines. Lindsay Lou s voice is one part jazz singer, effortlessly transitioning octaves, one part blues shouter, soaring over the band, and one part folk singer, rousing them all together in song. I m convinced I have seen the most affectingly expressive singer since Amy Winehouse Tim Chipping, froots Magazine Sat 24 February 15 RANT is the meeting of four of Scotland s finest fiddle players. Bethany Reid, Jenna Reid, Sarah- Jane Summers and Lauren MacColl create a rich and vibrant sound weaving a tapestry of melodies, textures and layers. Their debut album RANT won great critical acclaim and a Herald Angel Award. The band has also made major festival and concert appearances across the UK, Ireland and Scandinavia, and recorded strings for Julie Fowlis. Their latest release Reverie sees them continue this song strand, collaborating with Fowlis and Scots singer Ewan McLennan. RANT was nominated in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2014 and for Folk Band of the Year in the Scots Trad Awards This is dignified, deep and profound music. froots Sat 17 March EASTGATE PEEBLES EH45 8AD BOX OFFICE

6 Music...Music McGoldrick McCusker, Doyle As winter turns to spring folk music s legendary triumvirate of musical magpies Mike McGoldrick, John McCusker and John Doyle wrap up their stint on Transatlantic Sessions and tour their blend of top class folk songs, tunes and charming bonhomie. John Doyle (vocals, guitar, bouzouki, mandola) has played with Joan Baez, Linda Thompson and Mary Chapin Carpenter. John McCusker (fiddle, whistles, harmonium) now lives in the Scottish Borders and has played with The Battlefield Band, Mark Knopfler, Bob Dylan, and Paul Weller. Mike McGoldrick (flute, whistles, Uileann pipes, bodhran, clarinet, congas) is a founding member of Lúnasa, current member of Capercaillie, and has worked with Mark Knopfler, Eddi Reader and John Cale. Together they have built a global reputation for the excitement and freshness of their treatment of a mixture of brand new tunes and traditional songs that go back hundreds of years. Fri 16 February 16 Martin Simpson An intense, eclectic, spellbinding and deeply moving performance by one of the finest acoustic and slide guitar players in the world. Martin s interpretations of traditional songs are masterpieces of storytelling as he combines the different elements of British, Afro-American and old-timey music with his own songs. Martin Simpson has been nominated an astounding 27 times in the 15 years of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards - more than any other performer - with nine consecutive years as nominee for Musician of The Year. In 2017 he released his latest album Trails and Tribulations to huge critical acclaim. Whether playing American old-time music, blues, a Dylan song or his own material, Martin Simpson is unpredictable, individual and a guitarist of immense subtlety. British distillers have found ways of reinventing the original juniper-based spirit through a whole range of craft gins flavoured with anything from liquorice and cardamom to green tea, honey and exotic fruits. At tonight s gin-tasting event you can sample different brands and try out some cocktail combinations, under the expert guidance of one of Scotland s leading gin-makers. Friday 9 March 15...BUILDING ON SUCCESS A Celebration of Simon and Garfunkel Tim Chu and Ian Bailey grew up in the north west of England, both huge fans of the music of Simon and Garfunkel. Each established his own individual career in music - Tim as a professional session musician and Ian as a solo performer and recording artist. After years of busy individual touring schedules Tim and Ian joined forces to concentrate on celebrating the music of Simon and Garfunkel, touring intimate venues across the country. Everyone loves the music of Simon & Garfunkel and for me no one has recreated it better than Tim and Ian, the concert simply blew me away Phil Cool, TV comedian, impressionist and musician What a fantastic show with two great guys, two voices and two guitars delivering the best acoustic interpretations of Simon s classic songs Sally Naden BBC Radio A fundraising event for the Eastgate Development Project Fri 23 February EASTGATE PEEBLES EH45 8AD BOX OFFICE

Built by French prisoners from the Napoleonic Wars, it was financed on the tontine principle - an early form of life annuity. Sparkling with characters and intriguing stories, the rich history of this imposing Peebles landmark will be told by owner Kate Innes and local history researcher Sandra Whitnell. The award-winning Borders hotel is now a popular destination for visitors exploring the rolling hills and historic sights of the region. Tue 16 January TWEEDDALE SOCIETY John Buchan and Tweeddale Ursula Buchan, award winning author and lecturer specialising in gardening, garden history and social history explores the connections between her grandfather John Buchan and Tweeddale. John Buchan, the writer (and much more!) spent his youthful holidays at Broughton and Peebles. He acquired a deep and enduring love for Tweeddale, which he put into many of his writings, including The Thirty-Nine Steps. Tue 13 February TWEEDDALE SOCIETY Laxdale Hall A 1953 vintage Scottish comedy with the young Prunella Scales, Fulton Mackay, Jameson Clark, Roddy McMillan and introducing Rikki Fulton in his first film role. The residents of Laxdale are refusing to pay their road fund licence because of the poor state of the only road which links them to the rest of Scotland. A parliamentary delegation is dispatched to the Scottish Highlands to quell the rebellion! Along the way it encounters resistance from school teacher Morag and her roguish dad, Roderick McLeod. A fun film from a classic era - action and laughter set in beautiful Applecross. Tue 13 March Followed by the Tweeddale Society AGM The Legends of American Country The acclaimed tributes to Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard and Kenny Rogers are joined by icons George Jones, Charley Pride, Patsy Cline and Don Williams in this country music extravaganza. The show features four singers backed by the superb Country Storm band performing on an authentic stage set that will transport you all the way to Nashville. Europe's No 1 country music show arrives direct from Ireland and promises a foot stomping country music night to remember. Wed 10 January 18 The Jensen Interceptors Blues Review The set begins with Gary Martin singing to the sounds of the boogie woogie piano before Neil Warden s Blues and Beyond take over the party with Neil front and centre playing lap steel acoustic and electric guitars on tracks including Going Down South, Sexy Black Dress and Red Hot Mama. The Jensens take over the stage for the second half. The Jensen Interceptors are one of the most authentic and exciting blues bands on the UK scene. Playing in the classic blues style, fronted by harmonica ace Gary Martin, the band tear through a mix of covers by the likes of Slim Harpo, Little Walter, T Bone Walker and Muddy Waters as well as their own originals - all delivered with the authentic Jensen spin. This is Blues with a touch of Swing, a bit of Jazz and a lot of soul These guys are good really good!! The Toun Cryer Sat 10 February EASTGATE PEEBLES EH45 8AD BOX OFFICE
