PROGRAMMER S PICK When I was a student, discovering British cinema between the wars, our professor introduced us to all manner of films that had not figured in any of my school studies or late night Channel 4 self-guided movie nights. One of these was Journey s End made in 1930 the first film adaptation of the hugely popular stage play about WW1 written two years earlier, just ten short years after the Armistice. This was to be the first of five cinema adaptations (including a German version banned when Hitler came to power), and the film on which James Whale cut his directing teeth before going on to make Frankenstein. It was fascinating to consider what Whale brought to the work and I m keen to see how this most recent incarnation, commissioned as part of the United Kingdom s WWI Centenary Commemoration, is presented for our age. More a respectful study of stoic Britishness, nationalism and comradeship than anti-war piece. Keep calm and carry on!
