1 Roleystone Theatre CALLBOY September 2009 ONE ACT PLAY SEASON Without a Script Written and directed by Veronica Overton-Low A contemporary dramatic ensemble piece for 5 women Premiere (N.B: Contains coarse language) Four close friends re-unite after some years apart to celebrate the upcoming birthday of Maggie. Emotions surface, conflict ensues as one comes to a realization, while one remains in constant denial and two reveal secrets. Plus a young woman who bears witness to this dramatic snapshot of four lives lived is left wondering? The Trouble with George Directed by Penny Ramsell The play is a comedy about 2 people who are organising an arts festival and they are haunted by the former director's current success in his new venture. The Spotted Man Written by Walter Wykes Directed by Seth Woolley SEPTEMBER 4, 5, 11 & 12, Eugene, a man with a mysterious illness, seeks help. When it become apparent that this mystery virus may destroy mankind, they wait for the one man who can save humankind- The Specialist. This oneact is set in a nightmarish mood, and is certainly theatre of the absurd. Seth Woolley is a year 12 student from Armadale Senior High School who will be making his directorial debut at the Roleystone Theatre with this one act play. Tickets are $10 and available at the door. Call Bobbie and Gerry on for further info. Bring your family & friends for a night out at the Theatre. Submission Deadline: Please phone through or your submissions for next month s callboy. These need to be forwarded to me by the 25 th of each month so there is plenty of time to get the edition completed, to the printer and then posted. Any information or photos are welcome and remember the callboy is a great way to let other members know what is going on in the world of theatre and normal life. Bree Hartley: or , - callboy@roleystonetheatre.com.au
2 President s Report With Zyg away in the U.K. this month I have been asked to do a Vice President s Report to fill the gap! It was with much sadness we have heard of the passing of Mike Butler. He passed away on Monday 31 st August after a short battle with cancer. As a life member of our Theatre the Committee will be discussing a memorial for Mike, including the planting of a rose in his memory, at the next meeting. Dial M for Murder was certainly a cracker of a show with audiences loving the suspenseful, twisting plot and excellent character portrayal. A big congratulations to Rory for selecting the script and choosing to produce it at our Theatre. Well done to the cast and crew for keeping it real in a murder-mystery where the audience frequently laughed out loud! Next on our agenda is the biannual One Act Play season. We are trialing a four night season this year with all tickets $10 and available at the door. The mix of genres will ensure there is something for everyone I (almost) guarantee!. Preparations for our end of year musical, Sweeney Todd - the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, are well underway. Music rehearsals have been going for a couple of months now, with as many as three rehearsals a week! This just shows the dedication of Musical Director Matt Austin and the very talented cast. The harmonies are complex, the words are dark but in addition to all the doom and gloom there is some comedy I assure you. Take care, Bree SUBMISSIONS FOR 2010 Submissions for Junior Workshop/Teen workshop/skills Workshops for 2010 are being sought for consideration by the Theatre committee. If you are interested please go to our website, to download the submission form or contact Sherrill on or secretary@roleystonetheatre.com.au to get a hard copy sent to you. SUBMISSION DEADLINE IS ASAP Dramafest 2009 Friday 25 th, Saturday 26 th and Sunday 27 th September 2009 with certificates, awards and dissertation on Monday 28 th at 11am. Dramafest will this year be held at the Xanten Centre, St Norbert College, Treasure Road, Queens Park. The Adjudicator is Ian Toyne (Recently seen in Les Mis.). Roleystone Theatre has one entry, Veronica s Without a Script and this is on Sunday 27 th at 2pm.
3 RSA training: To work behind any bar in W.A. you now need to have a Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certificate. This involves completing either an online reading followed by questions or going along to a class at a RSA provider. The purpose of the RSA learning is so that all bar staff have the same required knowledge about alcohol and minimising its potentially harmful effects. We have a number of people that have RSA certificates in the Theatre, however I am finding it difficult to staff the bar for some performances due to availability of RSA certified members. To this end we are seeking expressions of interest from any member who would like to undergo this (admittedly easy) training and assessment, paid for by the Theatre, so they can be available and certified to help out in the bar a night, or five, each year! This will occur within the next couple of months. Please contact me on or callboy@roleystonetheatre.com.au to put your name down. So far I have Jack Barker and Kathryn Ramsell on my list. Thank you all for your ongoing support in this heavily regulated area of the Theatre! Bree FOH VOLUNTEERS If you think you could spare a couple of nights to work Front of House in 2009 please contact Daniel Ramsell on or Please look at the show dates and let us know which you want to help out with. BAR WORKERS Please contact Bree ( ) if you have done your RSA training and would like to highlight dates that you can be available to work in the bar in If you have done your RSA with us then we really hope you will step up to do the bar we need you!! 4 EGYPTIAN NIGHT On Saturday 22 nd August a good-sized group descended on the transformed Theatre foyer to partake of the Egyptian-themed social night. Most came dressed for the occasion and there were prizes galore. Dinner was followed by the movie The Mummy, with yummy desserts as well! Thank you to our social event team, Sherrill & Jack. Thinking ahead to Christmas We are looking at Sunday 13 th December 2009 for our annual Christmas do. This will be a 1pm lunch at local Roleystone restaurant The Grape Gallery. It will be approx $40 per person with a choice of two mains (sirloin or salmon) and free choice from a dessert cart. YUM!!!! We will just be having a meal this year and using a sun-downer in January 2010 for our presentations of Life Members Achievement Awards, Roleys and the Gold Roley. Creating two separate events gives the social committee greater flexibility when booking a venue for our Christmas meal as we will not then require a setting suitable for our presentations.
