2 Maynooth Film for All Film Club Maynooth Film for All Film Club in collaboration with access>cinema screens a fantastic mix of high quality cinema from around the world. This is your chance to see some great stories of different lives in other places and the opportunity to meet some of the filmmakers themselves. We screen on or about the first Wednesday of the month from October to May and membership is open to students and local community alike. Brief introductions and informal post-screening talks facilitated by Denis Condon Lecturer, NUIM and Q&A sessions with invited guests provide opportunities for critical interaction with film. It s a diverse programme of cultural films including an assortment of classic, foreign-language, art-house and independent cinema films that rarely make it to commercial cinema for very reasonable prices. Make sure to sign up to our database to receive regular updates on upcoming films and additional screenings outside our core programme with the chance to propose and vote on titles you would like to see included. We are always looking for ways to develop our local and college community links so we re delighted that NUIM Media Society have joined forces with us to actively promote and support the club across campus Another important development is Silver Maynooth Community Library which will allow us offer day time screenings. Between October & December we re showing a couple of Hollywood classics with FREE admission in the library on Main Street. See programme listing for full details. Fiennes says his motivation for adapting the work was the relevance of its themes to the present day, and here the parallels are unmistakably drawn. Dir: Denis Villeneuve Canada/France mins Lang: French, Arabic Incendies 5th December 2012 Starring: Lubna Azabal, Melissa Desormeaux-Poulin, Maxim Gaudette and Remy Girard This intimate epic interweaves the personal, the political and the mythical to gripping effect. Following the death of their Arabic mother, adult Canadian twins Jeanne (Mélissa Désormeaux- Poulin) and Simon (Maxim Gaudette) find themselves in her homeland, searching for a father they presumed was dead.

Dir: Lars Von Trier Denmark/Sweden/France/ Germany mins Lang: English Melancholia 6th February 2013 Starring: Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alexander Skarsgard, Kiefer Sutherland, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling Von Trier conveys to perfection the woozy dislocation experienced by those gripped by the black dog of melancholy, adding strong performances and painterly effects to the mix. As a sufferer himself, it s an obviously personal project and quite possibly the most sincere film he s ever made. Dir: Agnieszka Holland Poland/Germany mins Lang: Polish In Darkness 6th March 2013 Starring: Robert Wieckiewicz, Benno Furmann, Agnieszka Grochowska, Maria Shrader, Herbert Knaup, Kinga Preis This World War II drama tells the gripping true story of a Polish sewer worker in Lvov who keeps a group of Jews hidden in the sewer under the noses of the occupying Nazi forces. The director does a terrific job of recreating the murky sewers, in both design and lighting, skillfully sustaining the drama even as it takes place in gloom.

There are some spoken words, and a continuous orchestral score. It plays for laughs and tears; it switches from action to tenderness and it s got a really funny dog!

Set at Christmas it s funny, touching and beautifully paced with numerous examples of the celebrated Lubitsch touch.
