MAYNOOTH FILM FOR ALL 2010/2011
Maynooth Film for All: Film Club Welcome to Maynooth Film for All, Film Club s 4th year of fantastic cinema from around the world. Sincere thanks to all our members for their valued support over the last couple of seasons, we look forward to welcoming back familiar and new faces. Maynooth Film for All: Film Club is made possible through a partnership between Kildare County Council Library & Arts Service and The School of English, Media and Theatre Studies NUIM. We screen on the first Wednesday of the month from October to May and membership is open to students and local community alike. As a result of this collaboration we are in the fortunate position of having Denis Condon, Lecturer, to introduce and share his extensive film knowledge with members before each screening. At film s end Denis encourages the audience to consider and reflect on what they ve seen through lively chat and discussion. A highlight of this new programme is Ken Wardrop s award winning Irish documentary His & Hers. And we are delighted that Ken can join us for a Q & A session following the screening! The making of short films has proved a worthwhile format for many aspiring filmmakers who ve gone on to forge successful careers. To promote these innovative apprentices Shorts from the Irish Film Board s, Short Film Schemes will play before every feature this season. The positive reaction to the screening of Breakfast at Tiffany s last February confirmed the appeal of classic movies. To mark its 50th anniversary Alfred Hitchcock s iconic Psycho is our classic choice this time around. Would you like to get involved with the club? We re always keen to welcome new recruits and listen to suggestions for future screenings and ways to develop the club. Please contact Brenda Brady, Kildare County Council Arts Service, Tel: bbrady@kildarecoco.ie There is a one way traffic management system now in operation on the North Campus, please see enclosed map for details. All films are accompanied by a short introduction at 7.50pm Screening commences at 8.00pm promptly Seats are not allocated first come, first served! Please arrive in good time to minimise delay, especially if paying on the night Memberships and tickets are on sale on MFFA club nights outside JHL2 from 7.30pm Memberships can be purchased at any time from Maynooth Community Library, Main St, Maynooth Tel: There is a Centra store located in the John Hume building, light refreshments are available until 8.00pm approx. Dates may be subject to change
Dir: Ken Wardrop Ireland mins Lang: English His & Hers 6th October 2010 Through the collective voice of seventy ladies the hallways, living rooms and kitchens of the Irish Midlands become the canvas for the film s rich tapestry of female characters. The story unfolds sequentially through young to old. It finds comedy in the mundane, tragedy in the profound and provides an original insight into life - Galway Film Fleadh 2009 Dir: Alfred Hitchcock UK/ USA mins Lang: English Psycho 3rd November 2010 Starring: Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles Alfred Hitchcock was already famous as the screen s master of suspense when he released Psycho and forever changed the shape and tone of the screen thriller. From its first scene Psycho announced that it was taking the audience to places it had never been before. While the shower scene is justifiably the film s most famous sequence, there are dozens of other memorable bits throughout this film. Dir: Michael Haneke Austria/Germany mins Lang: German The White Ribbon 1st December 2010 Starring: Christian Friedel, Leonie Benesch, Ulrich Tukur, Ursina Lardi. Shot in stark black and white, this mesmerising film examines the life of a rural village in northern Germany over several months from 1913 to 1914, ending, tellingly, on the eve of World War One. We experience the rituals and intimacies of domestic lives, through a portrait of a time and place in history.
Dir: Jacques Audiard France mins Lang: French A Prophet 12th January 2011 Starring: Tahar Rahim, Niels Arestrup, Adel Bencherif, Reda Kateb Written and directed by Jacques Audiard this ambitious, intricately plotted and deeply engrossing film doesn t put a foot wrong. Winner of the Grand Prix Cannes in 2009 this exceptional crime drama was acclaimed as a stunning piece of filmmaking. Dir: Luca Guadagnino Italy mins Lang: Italian I Am Love 9th February 2011 Starring: Tilda Swinton, Edoardo Gabbriellini, Pippo Delbono, Marisa Berenson A feast for the senses, Luca Guadagnino s magnificent film I Am Love possesses a vibrant and formally irreverent style that articulates its themes of passion and constraint. Tilda Swinton turns in a stunning performance in a tale about forbidden passion and liberation from the constrictions of wealth and power. Dir: Neil Jordan Ireland/ USA mins Lang: English Ondine 9th March 2011 Starring: Colin Farrell, Alicja Bachleda, Stephen Rea, Dervla Kirwan Ondine effortlessly mixes myth and fantasy with the life of a fishing community on the jagged seascapes of the wild southwest. Colin Farrell in the lead role finds himself believing that a beautiful stranger may well be a myth come true, a woman sent to change his life and a powerful force for love and hope.
Dir: Peter Strickland Romania/Hungary mins Lang: Romanian/ Hungarian Katalin Varga 6th April 2011 Starring: Hilda Peter, Tibor Pálffy, Norbert Tanko, Melinda Kantor So potent is this film s gothic atmosphere that you might imagine you were watching some rediscovered treasure from an Eastern Bloc archive instead of the début film of British director Peter Strickland. The film s gripping narrative twists through the cross-country odyssey of the films heroine Katalin Varga and her young son. Dir: Jean-Pierre Jeunet France mins Language: French Micmacs 4th May 2011 Starring: Dany Boon, Andre Dussolier, Yolande Moreau Director Jean Pierre Jeunet s amazing visual vocabulary and hyperactive imagination provide the foundation for all his cinematic creations, and this ability to be both playful and serious is used to devastating effect in his latest piece of movie magic, Micmacs à tire larigot?
