2 Upcoming Events 1. Alter Ego; Tales from Beyond the Classroom exhibition opening Oct 13 Alter Ego; Tales from Beyond the Classroom is a juried selection of work resulting from a nationwide call for submissions. It acts as a glimpse into the private practices of individuals who lead their lives as art educators within their communities. Alter Ego references the often shaky balance between one s personal art-making practice, and the professional pressures and stigmas that educators face as artists. With representation from across the country, Alter Ego proves that the studio lives of art educators are rich and every bit as worthy of celebration as their successes in the classroom. This show was organized in conjunction with the CSEA National Art Education Conference in Fredericton, Oct Please join us at The Gallery, New Brunswick College of Craft and Design on Thursday, October 13, 7-9pm for the opening. The following are links to recent articles regarding the conference this weekend Spanish Embassy Film Series presents Butterfly Tongues Oct 13 The Spanish Embassy & UNB Fredericton's Culture & Language Studies Department present the award-winning Spanish drama La lengua de las mariposas / Butterfly Tongues on Thursday, October 13, 2011 at 7pm, Carleton Hall, Room 139, UNB Fredericton. Along various other international prizes, this film was nominated for 13 Goya Prizes in Spain and won the award for Best Screenplay in It is directed by José Luis Cuerda who is also responsible for the screenplay with Rafael Azcona. The film is based on short stories by the Spanish writer Manuel Rivas and stars Manuel Lozano, Fernando Fernán Gómez and Uxía Blanco. For Moncho, it's an idyllic year: he starts school, has a wonderful teacher, makes a friend, begins to figure out some of the mysteries of Eros, and, with his older brother, a budding saxophone player, he makes a trip with the band from their town in Galicia. But it's also the year that the Spanish Republic comes under fire from Fascist rebels. As sides are drawn and power falls clearly to one side, the forces of fear, violence, and betrayal alter profoundly what should be the pleasure of coming of age. (Adapted from ImDb.com) Trailer: (in Spanish) The free film runs 96-minutes and is presented in Spanish with English subtitles. The Spanish Film Series is brought to you by the Spanish Section of the Department of Culture and Language Studies at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, with support from the Spanish Embassy's Cultural Office. For more information on this series, please see: 3. NB- ME! Festival fourth concert Oct 13 with Penny Blacks and Olympic Symphonium On Thursday, October 13, the Charlotte Street Arts Centre will continue setting the stage for all things indie and emerging. The New Brunswick Musicians Emerge (NB-ME!) festival will kick off its fourth performance in the Charlotte Street Arts Centre Auditorium from 8-11pm, featuring the Penny Blacks and Olympic Symphonium. Penny Blacks is a 7-piece band, delivering songwriter Jason Ogden's raw, stripped-down torch songs as lush rootsy pop and 50's-tinged rockers. The band was recently voted "Group Of The Year" at the 2010 Best of Saint John Music Awards, showcased at the East Coast Music Awards and Music NB week, and are celebrating the September release of their debut full-length album, Harbour. Crafting delicately arranged folk-pop that drips with bittersweet melodies, soaring harmonies, and an awful lot of passion, The Olympic Symphonium have been sharing their quiet world with us since They are and always have been a collaborative effort between three multi-instrumentalists, songwriters, and friends: Nick Cobham, Kyle Cunjak, and Graeme Walker. The NB-ME! festival is open to the public by a suggested minimum donation of $5. Audience members must be legal drinking age to attend. Funds raised during NB-ME will support the continuation of the festival as well as CSAC s 2012 ArtReach programming. 2

Information : Monday Night Film Series presents Meek s Cutoff Oct 17 October 17, 8pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus Meek s Cutoff Director: Kelly Reichardt Run Time: 104 minutes Country: USA Year: 2011 Language: English Premiering at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival, the latest film from Kelly Reichardt (Old Joy, Wendy and Lucy) is her most ambitious and accomplished yet; trading in her unvarnished portraits of contemporary America for a powerfully ambivalent look back on the Old West. On the daunting Oregon Trail in the 1840s, shaggy, boastful trail guide Stephen Meek (Bruce Greenwood, Mao s Last Dancer, Barney s Version) leads a wagon train of three settler families headed by Will Patton (Brooklyn s Finest) and Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine, the upcoming Take This Waltz) over the Cascade Mountains. Claiming to know a shortcut, Meek leads the group on an unmarked path across the high plain desert, only to wind up lost on the punishing salt flats. Their confidence in Meek shaken, and battered by hunger and thirst, the travellers start to challenge each other as they are confronted by a series of life or death choices. Teetering on the edge of desperation, they reluctantly turn to a captured Cayuse tribesman who will prove to be either their undoing or their salvation. Majestically shot in the forbidding desert landscape, Meek s Cutoff is a brilliant, subtly feminist twist on the Western genre from one of today s brightest cinematic talents. Anchored by Michelle Williams quietly powerful performance, Reichardt beautifully utilizes the sparse, almost Biblical landscape to create a film of enormous resonance, grace and power. 10. Franz Liszt fundraising concert Oct 19 The Charlotte Street Arts Centre will host a special fundraising concert by acclaimed composer and pianist Peter Allen on Wednesday, October 19 at 7:30pm. Join us in the Auditorium for a full-evening s live program that celebrates the bicentenary of Hungarian composer, pianist, conductor, and teacher, Franz Liszt. Liszt was highly influential in the development of classical music in the mid-1800s and beyond, and was the inventor of the symphonic poem, an orchestral piece of music in which the content of a poem, painting or another non-musical source is interpreted. As a twist on this idea, the Charlotte Street Arts Centre will host visual artists and writers to interpret, during the concert, the musical works presented. In addition, at 6:30pm, as a lead up to the special concert, Dr. Willis Noble, Director of Music for the Christ Church Cathedral, will deliver a master lecture on Liszt, with entry by donation for the general public. Peter Allen is an accomplished pianist, composer and conductor, based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He s worked with well-known groups such as Symphony Nova Scotia, the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra and the Blue Engine String Quartet, just to name a few. True friends of the Charlotte Street Arts Centre, Allen and Noble support this benefit concert to help raise funds to support the necessary developments of the Charlotte Street Arts Centre facility, to improve access for people with mobility challenges. 5

Both exhibitions run until November 29, Learning to Fly is a series of paintings inspired by time Sullivan spent with a family of barred owls. The series grew to explore themes of meditation, energy points and nature. It is an exploration of the calmness found in a walk through the woods the beautiful, healing effect nature has on the mind. The central focus of the series is a reflection reconnecting the mind to the body. Monster Costume is a drawing series exploring identity, how concepts of social anxiety and the feeling of being ostracized are tied to appearance, and how the rules change in various contexts-- especially in the electronic social networking age. Estey stole pictures from the social networking website Facebook to use in this project. She acknowledges that the taking of the photographs she used for the series may not have been premeditated on the part of the subjects. At the very least, the subject has allowed the tag to stand, and for the photo to be attached to their name, Estey said. Complicity implies intention, and so, as a person puts on a costume and goes out in public, so have these people intentionally presented themselves not looking like themselves. Estey plays up the weirdness of the images by using borderline garish colours in the arguably crude medium of Sharpie marker, and by adding elements such as tribal type markings to the faces and bodies of the people. The Annex Gallery is an initiative between Gallery Connexion and the Fredericton Playhouse to provide a juried exhibition space for Gallery Connexion members and for the Playhouse to include programmed exhibitions in its galleries. In the 1960's, the families were uprooted and their homes demolished in the name of urban renewal and integration. More than 20-years later, the site of the community of Africville is a stark, under-utilized park. Former residents, their descendants and some of the decision makers speak out, and with the help of archival photographs and films, tell the story of that painful relocation. Location: Fredericton Playhouse. Run time: 40 minutes No Charge. Artwork must have been produced during the past two years (between January 2009 and November 2011) and must be suitable for display in government buildings. The deadline to receive submissions is November 14, Application forms and guidelines are available at Galleries at a Glance To find out about current exhibitions, please contact the gallery directly via their web page or phone number.
