Cinema Politica Fredericton presents Gold or Life/El Oro o la vida Nov 9 The screening will be held at Conserver House, 180 St. John St., Fredericton, at 7pm on November 9. The 2011 documentary Gold or Life - Recolonization and resistance in Central America (57-minutes) tells the story from the perspective of those opposing the Marlin mine in Guatemala. The film examines the environmental and human impacts of gold mining by Canadian mining company Goldcorp. It presents a range of perspectives from different actors impacted by Canadian corporate mining in recent years (representatives of mining corporations, community leaders, individuals living in mining-affected communities, government representatives). The approach allows for a greater understanding of the complexities that have brought corporate mining to the forefront of the human rights, environmental and business discourses in the last few years. Film trailer: All the Cinema Politica documentaries are followed by a discussion about the film and its themes for those who wish to stay. The co-host this week is the Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network. Joan McFarland will be in attendance for the discussion. She visited the communities affected by the Goldcorp mine in Films are free to the public but donations are encouraged to pay for Network membership fees. Please join us! With an impressive ensemble that includes Alec Baldwin (Rock of Ages, It s Complicated), Penélope Cruz (Broken Embraces, Vicky Cristina Barcelona), Roberto Benigni (Life Is Beautiful), Judy Davis (The Eye of the Storm, Marie Antoinette), Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network, The Squid and the Whale), Ellen Page (Inception, Juno), Greta Gerwig (Damsels in Distress, Greenberg) and Allen himself, the story follows a series of adventures and romantic entanglements in one of the world s most enchanting cities. Loosely inspired by Giovanni Boccaccio's The Decameron, To Rome with Love is told in four intersecting vignettes of both locals and visitors. Vacationing architect John (Baldwin) befriends a young man whose romantic travails bring back his own youthful memories. The young man, Jack (Eisenberg), has fallen head-over-heels for Monica (Page), his girlfriend Sally s (Gerwig) dazzling and flirtatious friend. Meanwhile, retired opera director Gerry (Allen) arrives in Rome with his wife Phyllis (Davis) to meet their daughter s fiancé. But when Gerry discovers a local mortician singing arias worthy of La Scala, he seizes on the opportunity to rejuvenate his own career. Across the city, Leopoldo (Benigni), an average middle-class Roman, wakes up one morning to find himself one of the most famous men in Italy. Unaccustomed to the limelight, he starts to enjoy his celebrity but soon learns that it comes at a cost. Finally, newlywed Antonio (Alessandro Tiberi) is forced to pass off a stranger (Cruz) as his new bride to his straight-laced relatives when he is accidentally separated from his wife for the day. To Rome with Love is light, but rich in humour, culture and romance. You ll definitely want to dust off your passport. Please check out the film line-up on our website: 8. November 18, 4pm St Thomas University, Brian Mulroney Hall, Room 101 Local hosts: Fredericton Peace Coalition, Canadian Union of Postal Workers Local contact: info@frederictonpeace.org From Fernwood Publishing: Stephen Harper s foreign policy documents the sordid story of the Canadian government s sabotage of international environmental efforts, a government totally committed to tar sands producers and a mining industry widely criticized for abuses. Furthermore, this sweeping critique details Harper s opposition to the Arab Spring democracy movement and his backing of

7 repressive Middle East monarchies, as well as his support for a military coup in Honduras, and indifference to suffering of Haitians following the earthquake that devastated their country. 7 The book explores Canada s extensive military campaign in Libya, opposition to social transformation in Latin America and support for a right-wing Israeli government.
