7 HELLO BOYS HELLO BOYS PET SOUNDS PET SHOP BOYS NEIL TENNANT AND CHRIS LOWE HEAD TO NEWCASTLE IN SEPTEMBER. BUT DID YOU KNOW... Neil Tennant was born in North Shields in July 1954 and went to St Cuthbert s Catholic boys grammar school in Benwell Hill. It is said that the songs This Must Be the Place I Waited Years to Leave and It s a Sin refer to his years there. Enough said. Tennant met Chris Lowe in an electronics shop on Kings Road in Chelsea in 1981 and they originally called themselves West End. Tennant was features editor of the iconic music magazine Smash Hits in the early 80s and in 1983 was one of the first journalists to interview Madonna. They remain friends. Pet Shop Boys are the most successful duo in UK chart history. Since signing to Parlophone in 1985, they have had 42 UK top 30 singles, 22 top 10 hits including four number ones, and sold more than 50m records worldwide. This makes them more successful than other great UK pop duos including Pepsi and Shirley and Dollar. PSB are three-time BRIT Award winners and have made an Oustanding Contribution to Music according to the Ivor Novello Awards. Some say that if you play the 7-inch vinyl single version of West End Girls backwards at 33⅓rpm, you can hear John Lennon reciting the Lord s Prayer. PSB have collaborated with artists including Dusty Springfield, Lady Gaga, Liza Minnelli, David Bowie, Yoko Ono, and Girls Aloud. There is no truth to the rumour that they are planning a Christmas single with Cliff Richard. PSB have diversified into writing a musical (Closer to Heaven, 2001); a soundtrack for the 1925 silent film Battleship Potemkin (2003); and a ballet score, The Most Incredible Thing (2011). Neil Tennant also had early career success at Macdonald Educational Publishing where he edited The Dairy Book of Home Management and various illustrated cookery books. Tennant and Lowe have the largest hat collection in the world. Allegedly. Sage Gateshead, September 2-3,

8 MUSIC MUSIC DANCING IN THE STREET Motown legend Martha Reeves and her Vandellas are heading to Riverside in September for a rare UK date. A recording artist for more than 50 years, Reeves brassy vocals distinguish her sound from her contemporaries and label-mates the Marvelettes and The Supremes, and hits including Jimmy Mack and Dancing in the Street remain popular more than 40 years after their release. Should you be unfamiliar with her legendary status, you may like to know that in 2012, Reeves six-show residency at Ronnie Scott s in London was a sell-out, and celebs Phil Collins and Boy George were among the guests. Riverside, September 5, 20 IMAGE CREDITS: Featureflash / Shutterstock.com COME CRY WITH ME Cluny 2 has a treat in store for fans of country with an appearance from Daniel Romano. His hard-luck storytelling music is rich with wry observations and earnest confessions and his fourth studio album Come Cry With Me, which came out last year, was shortlisted for Canada s Polaris Music Prize. Cluny 2, August 31, 10 GLOWSTICKS AT THE READY! Once one of Newcastle s biggest clubs, Ikon returns on August 24 to take over the O2 Academy. The Ikon in Concert line-up features three of Europe s biggest dance artists from the 90s and 00s - Basshunter (Now You re Gone and All I Ever Wanted), Ian Van Dahl (Castles in the Sky), and Lasgo (Something and Alone). Resident DJs Jeff Scott and JBS will be accompanying the main room acts and for those who like a bit of extra ooomph, there ll be a laser show, stilt walkers and fire eaters. O2 Academy, August 24, 15 BRING ME YOUR LOVES Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark) is at Sage Gateshead on August 27 with her Digital Witness tour. The tour follows the release of her fourth solo album St. Vincent, and Clark, who has been favourably compared to Kate Bush and David Bowie among others, will gig across Europe this autumn before returning to the US in December. Sage Gateshead, August 27, ON THE ROAD AGAIN Queen of British Soul Mica Paris returns to the Hoochie Coochie stage on September 5. Paris, who released her first and platinum-selling album So Good in 1988, has worked with a who s who of soul music since including Prince, Omar, Natalie Cole, and Bobby Womack. She has released seven acclaimed albums and returns to Hoochie Coochie for the first time since Expect a sell-out. Hoochie Coochie September 5,

The NE1 Zapcat Racing Grand Prix and City Championship takes place over a challenging course between the Tyne and Millennium Bridges on August The event is free and includes up to 16 heats and two class finals each day, so there s plenty to see. For those not in the know, zapcats are ultralightweight powerboats with a top speed of 45mph and so much power that their hulls can lift 90 degrees out of the water (hence the thrills and spills mentioned above). After her experience (and a long lie down in a darkened room to recover) she said: It didn t help when I asked one competitor, Royal Marine Corporal Steve Cox, to list the attributes required to be a success in this sport. He said, it takes strength, guile, awareness and a big pair of cast iron bollocks. I wonder why I didn t just go and get my coat then. Agh!

11 GNR GNR ON THE RUN... Ahead of the Great North Run Million Opening Ceremony starring Mark Knopfler, The Unthanks and more than 1,500 volunteer performers on September 4, we catch up with the man writing the show s narrative, which will be delivered by Tim Healy and Jill Halfpenny, awardwinning author David Almond... What do you like to write most? I ve always written, all my life. There have been many novels, such as Skellig, which was a huge success, and also many short stories, plays, and collaborative efforts with musicans, actors and directors. I love it all. Where did it all begin? Bedtime stories at home, learning to read at school, the beauty of the letters as the teacher wrote words in chalk on the blackboard...i grew up in Felling, Gateshead. There was a great little branch library which was really important to me. What did you read as a child? The King Arthur stories were really important, and I read a lot of comics. And then when I was a teenager I discovered the American writers, like Ernest Hemmingway. What s your aim as a children s writer? To write great stories and inspire children to go on to write themselves. Millions of kids all over the world love reading and I hope my books will inspire some of them to take up writing also. What does the GNR mean to you? It s wonderful; a great social thing. I ran in the first three, so I ve got a personal connection with the event, and I know that the feeling of running with thousands of other people is just wonderful. What has inspired you while writing the script for the One Million opening show narrative? The area, the city and the route. My story picks up on our big achievements of the past, like the Lindisfarne Gospels, the engineering triumphs of the 19th Century, and the great things going on now in science, art and sport. Did you know that Tim Healy and Jill Halfpenny are reading the script? Yes, and I m really pleased; they ve both got authentic Northern voices and the script is written with a Northern rhythm. Having a male and a female voice is important because the story is about everyone coming together, as they do in the GNR. What can we expect from the event? An amazing show on the Quayside. Lights, music, singing and dance in one of the most astonishing locations in the whole world. It s going to be amazing! GNR REACHES ONE MILLION When we started the run all those years ago, we could only dream of the millionth finish across the line. The Bupa Great North Run has become the world s greatest half marathon and we re proud to be the first event in the world to be officially recognised by the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) to celebrate this significant moment in the history of running. Brendan Foster, founder of the Bupa Great North Run Running and helping out on the very first GNR I had no idea how big it would become. The streets I used to train on when running wasn t fashionable have now become some of the most famous stretches of road to run in the world. Steve Cram Olympic athlete and BBC chief athletics commentator Million Opening Ceremony, Quayside, September 4, 12,
