4 4 Welcome to the 11th Annual Surrey International Children s Festival

5 Come and discover Art is Everywhere: let your inner artist free! Don t think you have an artist side? We say that s impossible! Everyone has their own way of showcasing their love and appreciation of art and their varied artistic talents. This year s Festival inspires us all to explore and discover our environment and everyday surroundings from a different point of view through art. Art is everywhere from movies, theatre & music to the shapes and lines of buildings, the rich colours of outdoor landscapes, and even the texture and style of our clothes. All of that, and so much more, is art. Over the three days as your students explore the many art making activities at the Festival, encourage them to think about where they can see art in their day-to-day lives. There will be many opportunities to participate in fun artistic activities such as the always popular Cut/Move/Snap Animation, Clay Arts, Storytelling Tent and free performances on the Community Spirit Stage. This year we welcome an all-star line-up of performers from each corner of the nation and across the globe, including shows from Iceland and Vietnam. No matter which performance you attend, students will experience great moments surrounded by and engaged in art. We look forward to welcoming you back to Bear Creek Park for our 11th annual Surrey International Children s Festival! 5

16 Festival Facts Who runs the Festival? The City of Surrey is the founding sponsor of the Festival. The Festival is run by a year round 2 person staff housed in the Surrey Arts Centre. The staff increases to over 125 during the running of the 3 day festival. 65 performers illuminate and entertain audiences and over 300 volunteers support the Festival. Safety There are uniformed and plainclothes RCMP officers on site for the full duration of the Festival. There are also volunteers from Community Policing assisting with traffic control and overall safety. In addition, trained first aid attendants are on site. Any student who gets separated from his/her class is taken to the Info Booth and RCMP officers work with staff to reunite them Why isn t it free? In order to maintain the professional level of programming and hands-on activities as well as ensure excellent customer service and on site safety and security, the Festival needs to cover costs. Staff work with sponsors who have generously supported the Festival. However, the basic costs of the Festival still require that some of the costs be absorbed by the audience. Programming We are very fortunate to be able to bring national and international professional performing artists to the Festival. Many of the shows have never toured lower mainland schools so it is a unique and exciting opportunity to see something you may not have access to otherwise. The staff of the Surrey International Children s Festival focuses on balancing curriculum relevant content with plain old fun in every performance programmed at the Festival.
