SETC is the largest theatre convention of its kind in the country, and will bring more than 5,000 actors, professional company representatives, design and technical professionals, theatre educators, high school and college students, commercial exhibitors, community theatre producers and theatre lovers to downtown Mobile, AL. Venice Theatre will present their production of 27 Wagons Full of Cotton in the Community Theatre Festival. In the High School Theatre Festival, Gulf Breeze High School will present their production of And They Dance Real Slow in Jackson and Boone High School will present their production of Collected Stories. The SETC Convention will be centered around downtown Mobile s Convention Center and surrounded by the host hotels and Play Festival Theatres. 6 WINTER 2018 Festival 2017 Report by Steve Bayless, FTC Executive Director The 2017 Annual Florida Theatre Conference Festival (FTC) opened with a presentation from the Asolo Repertory Theatre of Julius Caesar. The production was inventive, emotional and well-staged, and the audience was so involved there was a hush over the crowd (with an occasional laugh or gasp of surprise). The crowd jumped to their feet at the conclusion with thunderous applause. After the production, the actors led a 40 minute Talk Back session with the audience. Each of the five play festivals was well-attended and the audiences and adjudicators seemed pleased with the quality and variety of the shows. There were three Community Theatre productions, five Theatre for Youth productions, one DraMature production, three State College 10-Minute Plays, and 18 High School One-Act productions. The audition process is a strong component at FTC. We hosted 310 high school juniors and seniors and 50 two-year college transfer student auditions for admission to 51 colleges, universities, and conservatories. The annual SETC preliminary professional screening auditions saw 283 college students and professionals audition to move on to the SETC auditions in Mobile, AL. FTC Scholarship applications hit an all time high of 50 entries with two students selected to earn a $1,000 scholarship each: The Vern Bryant Scholarship was awarded to Alexander Knife (Ft. Walton Beach High School), and The Fran Walker Scholarship was awarded to Alexandra Rios (Largo High School). More than sixty workshops were presented, covering everything from theatre management and long- and short-form improv to technical theatre sessions, acting, singing, musical theatre and dance. 7 WINTER 2018 FTC 2017 Hack-a-thon Event BY K. APRIL SOROKO, Florida Atlantic University and Studio One Theatre The Florida Theatre Conference was excited to host its first annual Hack-a-thon event this fall, at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, FL, with approximately 25 students participating. The event was created with our talented design, tech and management students in mind and provided them an opportunity to examine how different technologies can be applied and improved for specific uses in the performing arts. The projects focused on improving existing technologies or creating new technologies to address some specific challenges in Theatre Design, Publicity, Management and Production. Five groups made up of between 5-6 members chose options from two categories: 1. A specific challenge Winners of the Technical Challenge They also determined what materials they would need to both present their idea, so that it would be clear and compelling, and/or create a model or mock-up as a visual aid. Students picked up their supplies that afternoon and worked over the night and next day to finish their presentation materials and rehearse in order to be ready for the FTC judges. The final presentations were entertaining and the projects were incredibly innovative and thoughtful. We are so proud of the winners. Each of the winners in the group received a $10 gift card from Starbucks! Given the success of this inaugural event, the Florida Theatre Conference looks forward to making the Hack-A-Thon part of the exciting offerings available for future student participants. We are sure that the event will continue to grow as word gets out about how much fun it is in: Design, Publicity, Management or Production 2. A type of technology: Improve an existing technology or Create a new technology During the first group work session, students brainstormed to participate in a unique creative brainstorming and team-building exercise. It is also a great way to get to know other student designers, managers and technicians from other schools in Florida! to further specify their challenge and technology. 7

8 WINTER 2018 Florida Teacher Wins SETC Award BY KIMBERLY PATTERSON I am honored to be this year s recipient of SETC s Innovative Playwriting Instruction award. My school, Oxbridge Academy, is an independent high school (grades 9-12) in West Palm Beach, FL and I am fortunate that teachers here are encouraged to create curricula that is collaborative and unique. I m always looking for ways to incorporate writing into my theater classes: in past years, my students have written monologues and short scenes. One year I had an advanced class that tackled their own tenminute plays. As a playwright myself, I believe in the importance of new play development what better way to create new work than by starting with the next generation of theater artists and audiences? One of my favorite activities (and the lesson I offered for consideration of the award) is the Pi Day Career Achievement Play. Pi (π) Day is celebrated around the world on March 14 and was introduced as a way to appreciate mathematics in our lives. In my lesson, students write short plays where each line corresponds to a digit of pi, starting with 3, 1, 4, and so on. When I tell the kids that this is what we re doing in class, they don t love the idea of having to write a play. And then, when I tell them that lines of dialogue must contain a specific number of words, they re Kimberly Patterson ready to mutiny. But once they actually sit down to try it, they find it to be a lot easier than they imagined (and a lot more fun)! I ve used this activity with students in a variety of grades, and in classes from Theater Fundamentals to Stagecraft. We always read the plays aloud in class, and have performed them at school assemblies. The lesson is also a great way to incorporate STEM into the arts. Richard Hopkins founded Florida Studio Theatre in Sarasota, creating one of the most important theatres in the country; Lauren Warhol Caldwell makes the Hippodrome Theatre in Gainesville one the most vital and important professional theatres in the state; Vanessa Logsdon ensures that Highlands Little Theatre is one of the finest arts organizations in Sebring; Melaney Douglass, one of the most revered and honored drama teachers in Orlando and Central Florida creates extraordinary work at University High School with eager and dedicated students, parents and staff; Scott Cooper, a scenic designer and design instructor, energizes St. Petersburg College and the entire Tampa Bay area with his work; and Evelyn Tyler whose career and service to Florida A&M University and Florida Theatre Conference is unparalleled and much appreciated. Our state and communities are made stronger and creatively richer by these artists continued legacy of production, design, education, and service. Many lives are enhanced by their extraordinary work. In looking forward, I encourage you to identify extraordinary artists in your community and nominate them for their exceptional service to theatre and theatre education. 12 WINTER Distinguished Career Awards Lifetime Achievement Richard Hopkins Florida Studio Theatre Since his arrival at FST in 1980, Mr. Hopkins has guided the theatre from a small touring company to a nationally recognized regional theatre, which impacts over 190,000 adults & children annually. He has directed more than 40 Richard Hopkins productions in FST s five theatres. He has worked at numerous regional theatres including Capital Repertory, Blowing Rock Theatre, TheatreWorks Palo Alto, The Players of Columbus, Delaware Theatre Company, Long Island Stage, and many others. During his 44 years of professional theatre experience he has acted in over 100 plays and directed over 100 plays. Mr. Hopkins began his professional theatre career as a resident actor with the Asolo State Theatre in Sarasota, Florida. He was a founding director of what is now American Stage Company in St. Petersburg and served as its Producing Director from Mr. Hopkins has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University. He has served as a Theatre Specialist for the U.S. Department of State to Cairo and Amman, and taught at the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Clown College. He served as the President of the Florida Professional Theatres Association from and also served on the Theatre Panel for the Florida Arts Council. Mr. Hopkins is the recipient of numerous awards including the Arts Leadership Award from the Sarasota Arts Council & the Richard G. Fallon Award for Artistic Excellence from the Florida Professional Theatre Association. Secondary School Melaney Douglass University High School (Orlando) Melaney has been an exemplary high school theatre educator since starting her teaching career at Colonial High School in When University High School opened, she moved to helm that school s theatre program and has been Melaney Douglass there ever since. She helped lay the foundation for the arts programs there. For the past 27 years, she has trained high school thespians at a professional level unmatched by most high schools in the area. In 2003, she was recognized as the University High School Teacher of the Year. She also was the first ever recipient of the Grand Bohemian Award for Excellence in Arts Teaching in Orange County in 2003 and the first two-time winner of that award again in She has been recognized by the Dr. Phillips Applause Awards Program as Outstanding Director four years in a row. University High School has been awarded more Applause Awards over the past four years than any other high school participating in that program. Melaney has always tried to bring new and groundbreaking shows to her high school to challenge her students and her audience. She brought Ragtime, Aida, Miss Saigon, Phantom of the Opera, Sweeney Todd, Tarzan, and Little Women, all of which received outstanding critical and public praise. Also, she has written multiple award-winning one-act plays for her students, which have been recognized at district and state thespian competitions. These included Scenes from a Tuesday in September, Silas Marner, Johnny Belinda, Mama s Coat, The Window School, and A Tulip for Lilly. She challenges her students to use their artistic talents towards making social change in their community, leading numerous fundraising events to donate funds to local charities. 12

13 WINTER Distinguished Career Awards College/University Scott Cooper Volunteer Evelyn Tyler St. Petersburg College Scott Cooper (USA) has designed scenery for American Stage, Jobsite, Gorilla, Jaeb (Straz Center for the Performing Arts), Stageworks and FreeFall theaters in the Tampa Bay area. His work has also been seen at the Goodman and Steppenwolf Theaters in Chicago. Scott Cooper He has received Creative Loafing s Best of the Bay outstanding Scenic Designer in the Tampa Bay area for 4 consecutive years and recently received NORTON awards for best set design for August: Osage County at American Stage and Night Mother at Stageworks Theater. He has been nominated twice for the Jefferson Award in Scenic Design in Chicago for his designs of Bus Stop and American Buffalo both at American Theater Company. He is otherwise kept busy by being the head of the theater department for Saint Petersburg College. He is a proud member of the United Scenic Artists Local 829. Florida A&M University Tyler is a native of South Carolina with bachelor degrees in Theatre Studies (SC State) and Organizational Management (Claflin University). She also holds an MFA in Theatre from the University of Central Florida. A few of her stage and film credits include For Colored Girls (Lady in Evelyn Tyler Red), Zora s Roots (Big Sweets), and Eric Blackmon (Counselor). In the theatre program, Tyler works as the properties supervisor/designer, costumer (ICE Camp), event planner, public relations manager, and photographer. Some of her On the Hill Highlights includes codirecting Sibling Rivalry by James Webb, with Dr. Valencia Matthews, providing voiceover work for the School of Journalism s South African aquaculture documentary, and presenting Malcolm Jamal Warner a print of her original painting, Branches of Gifts to the World. Professional Theatre Lauren Caldwell CommunityTheatre Vanessa Logsdon Hippodrome State Theatre For almost a quarter-century, Lauren Warhol Caldwell has consistently delivered high-quality professional live theater to Gainesville audiences through her dedicated work at the Hippodrome State Theatre. Recently, Florida Theatre Conference Highlands Little Theatre As Executive Director of Highlands Lirttle Theatre in Sebring, FL., Vanessa has overseen its daily operations since She is also Past President of XiXi Iota Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority which supports many charities in the area. 15 Newly Appointed Middle School Chair for FTC Matthew Belopavlovich was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin and holds a BFA in Acting from the UW-Milwaukee and Graduate Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorder Advocacy from Lesley University. His career highlights include performance work with Orlando Repertory Theatre, Walt Disney World, Broadway Dinner Matthew Belopavlovich Theatre in the Dells, Skylight Music Theatre, and Prairie Fire Children s Theatre. Belopavlovich has worked as a theatre educator at Florida Studio Theatre, French Woods Festival of the Arts, Hartford University School and with Milwaukee Public Theatre. He toured for two years as a clown and pre-show host on the blue unit of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey. His original work was featured at the New York Clown Theatre Festival and has received the Jeff Norton Dream Grant. He is currently a member of the Patel Conservatory Theatre Department. Belopavlovich recently directed Smokey Joe s Cafe and wrote A Doo Wop Christmas for the Show Palace Dinner Theatre. WINTER 2018 Distinguished Career Awards Lauren Caldwell, continued from Page 13 presented the Hipp s longtime artistic director with a Lifetime Achievement Award in the conference s Professional Theatre division. Caldwell will receive the award along with other honorees during closing ceremonies for the Florida Theatre Conference Festival, a four-day event taking place this year at Santa Fe College. It s very humbling, and it makes me feel really good, Caldwell said, adding, It also makes me feel old! Gary Cadwallader, president of the Florida Theatre Conference, said the award recognizes Caldwell for her dedication and leadership in developing the Hippodrome as a State Theatre of Florida. Her oversight of an amazing and vital education department and her continued passion for supporting artists, educators and audiences is inspiring to so many, he said. Her vibrant career has, and continues to make, a huge impact in our field. Caldwell, known simply as Warhol to many of her theater colleagues, began working at the Hippodrome in the late 1980s while pursuing her MFA in Acting at UF. Her first performance at the Hipp was in the cast of Eric Bogosian s Talk Radio. After graduation, in 1992, Caldwell became the theater s part-time director of education. She took over the position full-time the following year and has made Gainesville and the Hipp her artistic home ever since. 15

The Convention will include multiple festivals open to the public: The Theatre for Youth Festival, the High School Theatre Festival, the Fringe Festival, and the Community Theatre Festival. Tickets will be available at the door for each Festival. More than 90 commercial exhibitors offer demonstrations and sneak peeks at some of their products and services. Prospective students can talk with and engage with school faculty and representatives from over 120 universities, colleges, and conservatories. Auditions and offstage interviews are held for undergraduate and graduate programs. SETC members will be given the opportunity to audition and interview for jobs, both on and off stage, and more than 900 actors will audition and over 700 stage technicians will interview for over 85 professional companies from all over the United States.
