Theatre troupes from the deepest catacombs of the FTC Sarah Hardwick Sunshine State gather together to celebrate the ancient art form we all share a passion for: theatre! During the day, high school one act performances cycled while various colleges and universities stationed in the theatre lobby make every eager student s acquaintance. While at FTC, I learned about secluded and fabulous theatre colleges as well as the big-time art institutions. Students can mass audition for each College/University/Conservatory with a prepared monologue and/or song. I was beyond fortunate and received 21 callbacks for institutions around the State and Nation. These callbacks were not re-auditions, but casual invited information sessions from the theatre faculty. I found these sessions to be beneficial, particularly because I ascertained a great deal of information about each school s program. FTC helped shape my idea of the ideal program for me. At the festival I was fortunate to be the recipient of the Fran Walker Scholarship, a $1,000 award to be used for a Florida University or College. I am proud to announce that in the fall of 2014 I will be attending Florida State University for theatre. The Fran Walker Scholarship has made the daunting financial burden of higher education slightly bearable and for that I am forever grateful. I would recommend that all students attending FTC apply for this scholarship! You never know, it could happen to you. Beyond scholarships, auditions, schooling, and even the celebration of theatre, I have the memory of an invaluable experience shared with my high school s theatre family. Dreyfoos theatre department is the closest thing to a biological family I have ever known and somehow, FTC brought my theatre. continued on page 16 3

5 FLORIDA THEATRE CONFERENCE NEWS FALL 2014 AACTWorldFest 2014 at Venice Theatre By April J C Marshall Professional Theatre Services at Southeastern Theatre Conference From Senior Theatre and A Century of Music to a silent movie performed live on stage, stopping along the way for a partnering of Chinese opera and commedia del arte, the AACT World Fest was a true delight this past week for all involved in Venice, FL. Add Moliere times two, biblical stories, pop April J C Marshall music, love, greed, gospel singing, HIV/AIDS, a few zombie apocalyptic sheep, and poetry that flies & dances off the page to the mix, and voila, you have THEATRE!! Indeed, theatre of the truest kind making connections and telling -- stories across language, age, disability, and country was performed and celebrated at the host location, Venice Theatre and AACT. A slew of dedicated and friendly volunteers brought 14 countries together for six days of live theatrical entertainment involving presentation, participation, concert, multimedia, multi-lingual, song, dance, mime, and a little bit of mayhem. (And just ask anyone present if bread has taken on a whole new meaning.) In addition to the performances, there were workshops for actors, directors, singers, administrators, and even acrobats. These workshops covered topics ranging from theatre for social change, operating on a shoe-string budget, to audition styles, acting, new technologies for theatre, puppets, improv, using volunteers and using dreams for creativity. As a special treat, the masterful Ben Vereen shared Opening ceremony with flags of all participating nations his insights on theatre and generously gave of his time and talent through mentoring moments for growing actors (including this author). During the beautiful opening ceremony with presentation of the flags brought in by children of the theatre, he stated that the world should be looking to this event as an example for the melding of countries in a peaceful and loving environment. The fun did not end with the cessation of performances and workshops. Late night jam sessions combined South African chants, Bangli singing, drumming and traditional Australian instruments and lots of dancing bodies and new friendships. In short the week may best be summed up in the words of one of the actors from Canada (loose quotation): This week represents the best in humanity;; here we have friends of many nationalities, languages, interests, colors, coming together to celebrate and share the beauty of art in complete peace and joy truly this is paradise. SAVE THE DATE! March 4 8, 2015 Southeastern Theatre Conference in Chattanooga, Tennessee The Robert Ankrom Memorial Fund for the Advancement of Theatre Education in Florida The monies raised through donations will be used to provide guest speakers, special entertainment, and other educational enhancement experiences for all members of the Florida Theatre Conference. 16 FALL 2014 FLORIDA THEATRE CONFERENCE NEWS Florida Theatre Conference Inc Park Boulevard, Suite 7 Pinellas Park, FL (727) NON PROFIT US POSTAGE PAID ST PETERSBURG, FL PERMIT NO. 514 CHANGE SERVICE REQUESTED Publix Alachua County Festival 2014 continued from page 2 improvisation, jazz dance, tap dance, audition preparation, stage combat, clowning, monologue selection/ preparation, choosing the best song for your auditions, the journey from stage to film, playing intentions, preparing for Cattle Calls, stage design, lighting design, costuming, stage management, how to deal will a board of directors, and grant writing. The weekend will conclude with the Closing Ceremony on Saturday evening, where all Festival group and individual awards, and Distinguished Career awards will be presented. Also, the final Scholarship Raffle will be held at the Closing Ceremony. Memories of FTC 2013 continued from page 3 troupe even closer. On the final day, after an exhausting trip of theatre, Chipotle commutes, more theatre, auditions, schools, Technical Olympics (second place, woo-hoo!), scholarships, succulent cuisine, again more theatre, and fun, my troupe and I sat in the hallway outside our rooms and decompressed by watching our favorite episode of The Office (yes, we collectively have a favorite episode). We sat there, at 11 o clock at night, and tried to contain our boisterous laughter in that cramped hallway: heads rested on shoulders, arms were wrapped around each other. This may be a stretch, but that memory is how I would imagine everyone wants to remember high school. I have graduated so all those memories have been made and, though it may sound cheesy, I mean this with the utmost unwavering sincerity: FTC will forever be a memory I cherish. For the kids with bright futures and passions, I say seize the opportunities at FTC. There s an astounding plethora of them! You are in for an experience of fun, theatre, bonding, and discovery. Enjoy the moment and keep the memory for the years to come;; it ll be worth the smell of the grease paint and the roar of the crowd, I promise. 16
