BY STEVE BAYLESS We are thrilled to announce that the Asolo Theatre will return to present a world-premiere adaptation of The Tempest at the Festival s opening ceremony on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at 8:00 pm. Shakespeare s supernatural tale of love, family, and revenge comes to surprising life in this boisterous, highly physical production. In a fast-paced adaptation both funny and ferocious, the next generation will have the chance to explore their own definition of justice and consider the responsibility of those who wield power. The cast is comprised of third-year students in the Florida State University/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training. The touring program reaches 20,000 students and audience members throughout Florida. Each performance of The Tempest is followed by a post-show discussion with the cast, giving audience members a chance to learn about the rehearsal process, delve into the themes of the play, and discuss the artistic choices of the production. continued on page 2 1

2 SUMMER 2018 Festival 2018, continued from page 1 For the seventh year, the Festival will be held at the beautiful Santa Fe College campus in Gainesville, FL. The campus houses three theatre venues ranging from a state-of-the-art Fine Arts Hall (seating over 600), to the Building E Theatre (seating 300), to a large black box (seating over 100). These theatre venues will house the High School One-Act Play Festival, the Middle School Play Festival, the Theatre for Youth Play Festival, the Inclusion Festival, and the DraMature Showcase for Senior Theatre participants. To better understand our Theatre Festival, please go to our website at to see last year s Festival Program. This year s tentative schedule is on page 3. The final schedule will appear on the website in mid-september. The Festival begins on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 with registration opening at noon, the High School One-Act Play Festival at 3:00 pm, and the Opening Ceremony at 8:00 pm. The following categories are the highlights of the Festival: The Community Theatre Play Festival The two Community Theatre winners from the August 2018 Festival in Winter Haven will be showcased on Saturday, October 27, 2018 in the Building E Theatre. These two plays will represent Florida at the 2019 Southeastern Theatre Conference in Knoxville, TN. The High School One-Act Play Festival High Schools from across the state will compete for Superior One-Acts with Individual Actor Awards and All Star Cast Awards. Two plays will be selected to represent Florida at the 2019 Southeastern Theatre Conference in Knoxville, TN. The written critiques for each One-Act will be distributed after the Closing Ceremony. The Middle School Play Festival This is the 4th year for the Middle School Play Festival of the Florida Theatre Conference. Middle schools from around the state will perform for industry professionals and conference attendees, and will receive positive, constructive feedback from professional respondents. Awards include Outstanding One-Act and individual acting and All-Star cast awards presented at the Closing Ceremony on Saturday evening, October 27, The DraMature Showcase Senior theatre groups from around the state of Florida will present their showcase materials and/ or plays for appreciation from the audiences. Participation plaques are presented, and critiques from an expert Respondent will follow each presentation. FTC s Got Talent Competition Individuals or small groups may register on-site to present monologues, songs, comic sketches, dance selections, or any theatrical selections. Three judges select a first place winner ($ cash prize) and a second place winner ($ cash prize) on Friday evening, October 26, There will also be a raffle drawing that evening. FTC Hack-A-Thon For the second year, FTC will host a student Hack-A-Thon competition for technical students to compete in teams to solve a theatrical problem: a rain curtain, building the puppet for Little Shop of Horrors, etc. Prizes for each member of the winning team will be awarded on-site. Southeastern Theatre Preliminary Professional Screening Auditions College/University students will register through the SETC website for a slot in the auditions. The students will be adjudicated by three professional theatre continued on next page 2

3 SUMMER 2018 respondents on Friday and Saturday and be given a numerical score. Approximately 33% of the students with the highest scores will be forwarded to the 2019 Southeastern Theatre Conference in Knoxville, TN where they will audition for jobs in summer stock, theme park shows, cruise ship entertainment, and a myriad of other opportunities for summer High School and College Transfer Student Auditions Junior and Senior High School students will audition for more than 53 Colleges/Universities on Friday, October 26, for admission and scholarships. The students will present a monologue and may add a vocal selection. The College Transfer students will present their auditions on Thursday afternoon, October 25 using the same audition criteria as the High School students. The Colleges/Universities will Call Back those students who meet talent and scholarship requirements for College/University admission. The students and their parents will be able to talk to the professors at their Exhibit Hall booths beginning on Thursday, October 25 through Saturday, October 27. The Technical Olympics This event requires four representatives from each school and one alternate. Each contestant is assigned to a station. The station might be costumes, props, sets, or lighting. Register your school at the registration desk on-site. Only a limited number schools may compete, but there is plenty of room for spectators. First Annual Design/Tech/Management Review Student designers, technicians and stage managers will be given non-competitive and constructive feedback on portfolios, designs, or stage management prompt books. More information will be posted on Facebook and our website: Festival Workshops All of those attending the Festival can participate in over sixty workshops presented from Wednesday through Saturday afternoon. Workshops include improvisation, jazz dance, tap dance, audition preparation, stage combat, clowning, monologue selection/ preparation, choosing the best song for your auditions, the journey from stage to film, playing intentions, preparing for Cattle Calls, stage design, lighting design, costuming, and stage management. The weekend will conclude with the Closing Ceremony on Saturday evening, where all Festival group and individual awards, and Distinguished Career awards will be presented. Also, the final Scholarship Raffle will be held at the Closing Ceremony. 6 SUMMER 2018 New Opportunity for Design/Tech/Management Students at FTC 2018! This year, Design/Tech/Management students will have a new opportunity to receive feedback on their design and/or production process at the Conference. As theatre professionals, we know that students in Design, Tech and Management benefit from seeing each other s work and getting feedback on the process as well as on best practices for communicating those ideas in a professionally-minded way. Our team of professional directors, designers and technicians will work with participants by providing direct feedback on the submitted work. Conversations will focus on the communication process - verbal communication of the design idea, research methods, drawing, drafting and model making as well as construction techniques. This review will provide students with practice honing all of their communication skills as they look to college and beyond. Students will be able to submit projects for review in the following areas: Scenic Design Costume Design Lighting Design Make-up and Hair Design Properties Design Stage Management Students interested in this opportunity can bring projects in any of these areas for review but will need to submit them following the criteria below: FOR SCENE DESIGN and LIGHTING DESIGN SUBMISSIONS 1. Students should produce a display board (standard tri-fold display board - black or white) with compiled research images and they should be cut carefully and mounted to the board using double-sided tape or spray adhesive. All images should be labeled. A separate title label should include - student name, project name, year of production/project and school name and location. 2. For scenic drawings and models - all work should be in ½ or ¼ scale. The model should include a 6 tall scale figure inside the design. 3. For lighting design students will submit their light plot drawn to scale ideally ½ scale 4. All images should be cut carefully and mounted to the board using double-sided tape or spray adhesive. All images should be labeled. A separate title label should include - student name, project name, year of production/project and school name and location. 2.Costume construction or costume crafts submissions can be displayed separately on a dress form or other display as is appropriate for the item. 4. All design projects should include images of the completed production work if the show was realized. These production photos can be mounted on the same board along with research and should be labeled as production photos. FOR STAGE MANAGEMENT SUBMISSIONS 1. The student should provide several production photos on a free-standing display (this can be smaller than a standard tri-fold display board). All images should be labeled, and each image should be cut carefully and mounted to the board using double-sided tape or spray adhesive. A title label should include - student name, project name, year of production/project and school name and location. 2. The student stage manager s prompt book should include: - Contact sheets - Rehearsal reports - Sign in sheets - Script with cues - Props list - Blocking ground plans - Any additional production paperwork including Fly Charts, Shift Charts, Character Tracking Sheets, etc. 3. 7 SUMMER 2018 SETC Professional Screening Auditions Getting the Inside Scoop! BY MARCI DUNCAN SETC Florida Screening Coordinator & FTC Vice President Anyone who knows me knows talking about theatre is something I LOVE to do. I have performed in film, television, commercials and onstage, so one would also know that I also LOVE to perform. So, when I was asked to Marci Duncan serve as the on camera interviewer for an audition project, I gladly said yes. I serve as the Screening Coordinator for the Florida Theatre Conference which in turn allows me to serve as the Audition Committee Chair for the Southeastern Theatre Conference. In addition, I recently have been asked to serve on an Audition Task Force which seeks to enhance the audition process at SETC. In evaluating the audition process, we developed this audition task force to improve the screening audition process on a state level. One of the ways in which we sought to improve the screening auditions was to interview professional theatre companies to find out what constitutes a good audition. During this process I was able to hear very specific tips for actors and theatre practitioners alike for making the audition process a successful one for those participating in them. Because I serve on the screening audition task force I was able to simply ask the individuals who are casting, what they are looking for. I pulled the professional theatre companies aside and asked them very specific questions about the auditioning process. From these answers we formulated a video series with this vital information straight from the casting directors to you. It will serve as a great resource for auditioning for SETC for all theatre practitioners to use. An unexpected treat that came out of this interview process for me was the wonderful opportunity to interview professional actor and SETC s 2018 keynote speaker Chris Chalk. I asked Chris his perspective on what makes a good audition, from the actor s point of view. Chris was fun, energetic and full of applicable information to help artist give their best in an audition environment. As the chair of the audition committee for the Southeastern Theatre Conference it was such a great opportunity to meet some of the casting companies and talk with them about what they are looking for. This information helps me to insure that the audition process is set up in a way that both the actor and the casting companies get out of the process what they need. The goal is to apply this information to the screening auditions so that our process can be the best it can possibly be. Ten-Minute Play Festival at FTC 2018 We have been piloting a Ten- Minute State College play festival at FTC as a way for State Colleges to participate affordably as performers at FTC. We had great fun with three schools presenting last year, but we need to commit Terry Klenk to grow! Please consider bringing a ten-minute piece that involves your students as actors/ directors/designers in any combination. We have set a budget limit of $ per entry. Santa Fe will provide café table and chairs, 2 doorframes, and a set of acting cubes. (In addition, we will try to accommodate any request for set pieces.) Pieces can be lit with minor choices in a rep plot, and sound support is available in the E Auditorium Theatre. The presentations are on Thursday night (October 25, 2018) of the festival so that it will not interfere with transfer auditions. Make plans to be a part of this activity and have a voice at our STATE of the STATE Colleges meeting during the festival, co-chaired with myself and Jeanine Henry from Eastern Florida State College and FCSAA Theatre Representative. 9 SUMMER 2018 Florida Winners at SETC in Mobile, AL Once again, Florida was well represented at the SETC festival held recently in Mobile, AL, carrying away awards in almost all categories. In the High School competition, Boone High School won Best Play and Best Make-up for its production of Collected Stories, directed by Nadine Love. Sofia Deler won Best Actress and Megan Smith was voted to the All Star Cast. Gulf Breeze High School s Sam Kegley and Macy Mateer were voted to join the All Star Cast and Logan Reeder received the Judges Special Award for Best Monologue. In the Community Theatre category, Venice Theatre s Morgan Graves received Best Supporting Actress and John Andzulis won Best Lighting Design. The production was directed by Murray Chase. Rhonda Wilson of Star Center Youth Theatre received 2018 Sara Spencer Child Drama Award. 11 SUMMER 2018 Matthew Belopavlovich New FTC Board Member Matthew Belopavlovich was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin and holds a BFA in Acting from the UW-Milwaukee and Graduate Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorder Advocacy from Lesley University. His career highlights include performance work with Orlando Repertory Theatre, Walt Disney World, Broadway Dinner Theatre in the Dells, Skylight Music Theatre, and Prairie Fire Children s Theatre. Belopavlovich has worked as a theatre educator at Florida Studio Theatre, French Woods Festival of the Arts, Hartford University School and with Milwaukee Public Theatre. He toured for two years as a clown and pre-show host on the blue unit of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey. His original work was featured at the New York Clown Theatre Festival and has received the Jeff Norton Dream Grant. He is currently a member of the Patel Conservatory theatre faculty. Belopavlovich recently directed Smokey Joe s Cafe and wrote A Doo Wop Christmas for The Show Palace Dinner Theatre. FTC Scholarships for High School Seniors The Florida Theatre Conference is committed to supporting the continuing arts education of the youth of Florida. FTC will again give two $1,000 scholarships to deserving high school seniors who must attend college in the state of Florida. Students and teachers interested in these scholarships can find the forms on our website, on the secondary school tab. We will announce the winners of the Fran Walker and the Vern Bryant Scholarships at the closing ceremonies of our annual Festival. 11
