FLORIDATheatre is published three times a year and is free of charge. To be added to the mailing list, contact Robert Ankrom at rankrom76@ aol.com. President Rick Kerby Executive Director Robert E. Ankrom Editor Susan M. Smith Dianne Dawson received Best Actress for her portrayal of Dot in the Manatee Players production of Sunday in the Park with George, and Steve Dawson received an award for special male actor. At the Southeastern Theatre Conference held March 2-5 in Atlanta, the state of Florida triumphed yet again, winning the top awards in both the Community Theatre and Secondary School festivals. Among the 20 plays presented in the Secondary School festival, Gulf Breeze High School (Pensacola) received runner up for its production of the musical 13. The production was directed by Margie Timmons and three of the cast were selected as All-Star cast members Claney Outzen, Miles Patrick, and Josh Lawson. Gulf Breeze repeated last years success at SETC when its production of 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee was the runner-up. continued on Page 2

2 Manatee Players production of Sunday in the Park with George The story of 13 concerns the life of 13-year-old Evan Goldman as he moves from New York City to Appleton, Indiana, and his dilemma when the move conflicts with the celebration of his Bar Mitzvah. Winner of Best Production in the Secondary School category was West Orange High School, from Orlando, for its production of INDEPENDENCE Pop: 301, directed by Ken Rush. The leading female character, Lizzie played by senior Brooke Morris was named Best Actress. This production has been entered in three major competitions this school year and has taken first place at all three, with Brooke winning Best Actress at all three competitions as well. Tyrone Speller was named to the All-Star Cast and the cast and crew combined were given awards for Best Costumes and Best Load In and Load Out. The original script of INDEPENDENCE: Pop. 30, written by its director, Ken Rush, is set in 1919 in a rural Southern Louisiana town where the citizens are faced with a racially explosive situation when a young black man is wrongly accused of raping a local white teenage girl. Lizzie, the daughter of a local farmer, has been deaf since an early age. She establishes her independence when she faces the accuser in a court of law in front of her family and her town. Finally, Manatee Players, with Sunday in the Park with George directed by Rick Kerby, was the big winner in the Community Theatre competition. Cast and crew not only won six top awards, including Best Dianne Dawson, winner of Best Actress award, as Dot in Manatee Players production of Sunday in the Park with George Production, they will represent Florida and the entire 10-state Southeast region at the American Association of Community Theatres national festival in Rochester, 2

3 New York, in June. Manatee Players have had this honor for three of the last four national festivals. Their success is unprecedented in the history of the festival. The five awards in addition to Best Production were to Rick Kerby as Best Director, to Dianne Dawson as Best Actress, her husband Steve Dawson as Featured Actor, to Rick Bogner for Best Music and Vocal Direction, and an award for Best Technical Production. Bob Ankrom, FTC Executive Director, was sitting with the executive directors from the ten states competing in this category. When the many Florida winners were announced Bob said: I was pleased and proud to be associated with these gifted and creative people. We join Bob in congratulating all Florida participants at SETC. West Orange High School production of INDEPENDENCE Pop:301 L to R: Gulf Breeze High School students Miles Patrick, Claney Outzen, Joshua Lawson, were All-Star cast members at SETC s regional one-act competition held in Atlanta in March. FTC Festival 2011 FTC s 55th Annual Festival will be held at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, FL October 26 to 29,
