Montré December 2018 Page 2 AGO Chapter Programs Jim Walton, Sub-Dean Exciting Announcement! We have secured Tom Trenney to be our clinician for a Festival of Sacred Music to be held at First Church, United Methodist Sarasota on January 26, 2020! This event will include a large Festival Choir, brass, organ, and handbells to perform instrumental music, anthems and hymns. Tom is wellknown throughout the church as an exciting improviser, talented composer and sensitive and spiritual choral conductor. Those who have attended his sessions at Montreat Music and Worship Conference and elsewhere have raved about his direction, citing the experience as life-changing. Please reserve this weekend on your calendars and begin promoting this with musicians under your care. For more information on Tom Trenney, please follow this link. Upcoming December & January programs: Sunday December 9, 5:00 PM Sarasota Young Voices- Co-Sponsored event Christ Church, (Episcopal) 4030 Manatee Avenue West

Wow us with your broad knowledge of all things musical and take home the prize! What better way to unwind after the stress of December s music production than to have a fun evening with sympathetic colleagues? Our chapter will supply snacks to sustain you while you compete, and we ask for some volunteers to bring their showstopper cookies or bars to create a tempting dessert bar. Please contact Janet Davis to RSVP and to volunteer your goodies: , or janmato10@icloud.com. Easy test question: Why was the Orgelbüchlein called the little organ book? Tough test question: What is the composition and rough proportion of metals in spotted metal?
Montré December 2018 Page 4 Welcome to New Members Susan Crumpler I m beginning to think the word is out that Florida is a great place to live. Since November we ve added three new members. 6 Montré December 2018 Page 6 Mozart s The Magic Flute tickets For Chapter Members The Program Committee has planned a special event for next February, different from the normal offerings of organ recitals, choral/organ workshops, or worship planning. Richard Benedum will give a lecture on Mozart s last opera, The Magic Flute, written in the last year of his life. He has taught 15 seminars on Mozart s music, especially his operas, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and held in Vienna, Austria. The lecture will be at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 11, in Gillespie Hall at the Church of the Redeemer, and will give historical background, and briefly summarize the opera and introduce its characters, illustrated with selected recorded excerpts. He will also address the question of Masonic symbolism embedded in the plot and in Mozart s music. The Program Committee has also made arrangements with the Sarasota Opera for chapter members to attend the opera at a date convenient to their own choosing. Members can 1) call the Opera box office at (941) between 10:00 and 4:00 p.m.; 2) print the ticket order form included with this issue of the Montre, and send it to the address supplied on the form; or 3) order on-line again, see the URL listed on the order form. Tickets range between $19 and $145, so everyone should be able to find a seat in a preferred price range. The sooner you order your tickets, the more likely you are to get your first choice of date and seating location. And remember: the opera house is small enough so that there are no bad seats! Please see the ticket information sheet and seating chart at the end of the newsletter. Why not call an AGO friend and plan to go together?

Montré December 2018 Page 14 Top 10 Free Church Music Resources Amy Cerniglia, OrganistSRQ Those of you with unlimited budgets, feel free to skip this post. The rest of us will enjoy this list of organ and church music resources that won t cost you a dime. Particularly in the case of students, some may not feel comfortable composing or improvising original music. Whether you are a student yourself, or a teacher with students who would rather not spend the money, here are some websites that contain everything from handbell and choral music to hymn reharmonizations as free PDFs: 1. Joby Bell s Help Yourself In 2000, Bell received the Second Prize and the Audience Prize in the American Guild of Organists National Young Artists Competition in Organ Performance. Since 2004, he has taught organ and church music studies on the faculty of the Hayes School of Music, Appalachian State University. Bell pokes fun at the publishers who passed up his arrangements, explaining that this motivated him
Montré December 2018 Page 15 to supply them free of charge. Growing church musicians can not only practice these free arrangements, but also analyze chord progressions for application in their own reharmonizations. 2. Hymnsfororgan.org This minimalist site provides exactly what it promises: free introductions/reharmonizations of popular hymns for organ. The site offers no biography or explanation other than a residential address in Georgia, but this nononsense approach is easy to navigate. Pieces won t challenge seasoned organists, but anyone still becoming confident on hymns will appreciate their accessibility. 3. Free LDS Sheet Music Many congregations across the Protestant church sing hymns such as Be Still, My Soul that Latter-Day Saints sing as well. There are some hymns unique to LDS, of course, but church musicians of all types will find simple arrangements at this website. I ve linked to a piece specifically arranged for organ, but Free LDS Sheet Music provides music for SSA, SATB, and other ensembles. 4. Ashley Danyew I LOVE this blog not only for its printable schedules, vocal warm-ups, and handbell music, but also for generally informative and entertaining posts about church music. A Ph.D. student in Rochester, Danyew has the music and writing background that will leave you feeling inspired after reading her posts. She offers 62+ games for children s choirs, rhythm pattern cards, step-by-step guides to creating your own reharmonizations and instrumental arrangements, and more. Danyew s blog offers something for everyone. 5. UMC Discipleship Ministries New hymns, choral anthems, Communion responses, and more can be downloaded at this United Methodist Church blog. 6. Laurel Hunt Pederson The subheading for the website announces, free piano and organ sheet music, and you ll find everything from solo organ Christmas music to piano/organ duets and many international hymns. Even those with enough music can browse and learn about more global hymns! Where else will you find an arrangement of Jehova, se nuestro guia?
Montré December 2018 Page Cantate Domino Here, you ll find a collection of anthems and motets, services and settings, hymns and psalms, organ and piano music, and a large selection of carols. This site seems particularly useful for anyone with a wedding in a pinch. 8. Hymns by Carolyn Winffrey Gilette Rev. Gilette s hymns prove useful especially in response to a specific church occasion or current event, such as O God, We ve Prayed in Wind and Rain for victims of recent destructive storms. 9. Musescore Like shopping at Forever21, Musescore is cheap but risky. Some professionals do post compositions through Musescore, providing occasional gems. This site comes in handy when looking for particularly odd or obscure arrangements, such as the Hallelujah Chorus for a viola ensemble, which even the American Viola Society promotes. 10. IMSLP Would a list of free online resources really be complete without a shoutout to our favorite public-domain music provider? Many of you are already well-acquainted with this site, but I m always amazed to meet organists who are not aware of it. If you re looking for a piece by Bach, Buxtehude, or any other composer whose music is legally available in public domain, you ll find it right here. You do have the option of paying for a subscription so that you don t have to wait to download, and I recommend supporting this great website if possible.
Montré December 2018 Page 17 For sale: Rodgers Organ Model 578 Two manuals and pedal board, six years old and in perfect condition. The finish is a light oak and the instrument has been used in my home since I bought it new. Google this model and discover its many features (far too many to list here). The organ is located in Bradenton, Florida. This would be a perfect addition to any music room in a home, but also to a sanctuary in a church. A brand new Rodgers that is very similar to this 578, the newer 579, has a list price of over $40k. I am asking $17,500 but I'm open to reasonable offers. Please feel free to phone me at and come over with some music and try it out. You won't be disappointed. Lew Davies
