2 Dear Audience, Thank you so much for being here this evening. Please take a moment to thank the Orchestra Musicians who consistently contribute so many beautiful musical moments for Jefferson City and the mid-missouri Community. Would you like to become a Symphony Angel? Before our program begins we would like to take a moment to remember a dear friend... Richard Lynn Stokes February 22, 1937-December 29, 2012 Richard shared more than 20 years of his talent with the Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra. We are deeply saddened with his departure however he will always be remembered for his immense talent and kindness. He was a teacher, artist, pilot and musician all of his life, learning the art of fiddle playing at an early age and winning the state fiddlers contest at Nixa at the age of 16. He s played his violin for numerous charity and political events and was also passionate about playing music for individuals with special needs. Richard also played in the Jefferson City Symphony. To all who knew him and loved him, he loved his music. His violin will never be silent as his daughter, Paula and granddaughters, Nicole and Emily, share his same passion for music. - Excerpt from Jefferson City News Tribune, January 1, 2013 The Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra is comprised entirely of Volunteers who love to share music with our community. There are many costs associated with our performances, such as rental and purchase of sheet music, instruments and repairs, and even the cost of this program you are reading. We rely on family, friends, and businesses in the Jefferson City area to provide funds to continue bringing you beautiful and exciting music from around the world. If you or your business is interested in supporting the Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra please choose one of the options below: I would like to give a donation of $, the check is enclosed. 6 William Tell Overture Music Notes Fond childhood memories of the Lone Ranger or countless cartoons from Mickey Mouse to Bugs Bunny may seem familiar once you hear William Tell Overture. Rossini s famous Overture is prelude to his opera by the same name. The music sets the stage for the opera which takes place in the picturesque Swiss Alps. The entire Overture has four distinct settings; Dawn, Storm, Ranz des Vaches (Call to the Cows), and the March of the Swiss Soldiers Finale. Peer Gynt From the composer Edvard Grieg: "Peer Gynt, the only son of impoverished Norwegian peasants, is described by the poet as a personality suffering from an excess of fantastic imagination as well as from delusions of grandeur. In his youth he commits many a mad prank; he comes to a peasant wedding, abducts the bride and carries her up to the mountain heights, where he leaves her, to roam with wild shepherd girls. Soon he loses his way into the realm of the Mountain King, whose daughter falls in love with him and dances for him, but he makes fun of the dance and the...music, whereupon the mountain folk set out to kill him. He escapes, journeys to foreign continents. In Morocco he assumes the airs of a prophet and is greeted by Arabian maidens. After many a strange turn of fate he finally returns home as an old man, once more penniless, having suffered shipwreck on the way. Here the love of his youth, Solveig, who has remained true to him through the years, greets him; his weary head at last finds rest in her lap." Fanfare from La Peri This warm fanfare is the opening piece to the ballet La Peri which first debuted in 1912 in Paris. Translated the title means Flower of Immortality. The flower and the struggle to possess the power is the basis of this romantic ballet.
7 Harry Potter Music Notes This piece brings you along the journey of Harry Potter and his friends while growing up at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Close your eyes and imagine flying on your broom or fighting dangerous foes to keep you and your friends safe from Voldemort. Field Violins 904 Amethyst Lane Jefferson City, MO (573) Serving the stringed instruments needs of the Jefferson City area Funeral March of the Marionettes Two of the members of the Marionette troupe have had a duel and one of them has been killed. A party of pallbearers is organized and the procession marches out for the cemetery. The music soon takes on a more cheerful spirit, for some of the troupe, wearied with the march, seek consolation at a wayside inn, where they refresh themselves and also descant upon the many virtues of their late companion. At last they get into place again and the procession enters the cemetery to the march rhythm where the soldiers reflect upon the briefness and weariness of life, even for marionettes. Norwegian Dances Also from composer Edvard Grieg, this collection of dances from Grieg s native Norway was originally composed as a piano duet. Dance No. 1 was adapted from a tune called Sinclair s March. Dance No. 2 is a halling to the mountains that surround Oslo (Christiana during Grieg s time). The halling is a type of dance performed solo by a man that is kicking down his hat from a stick, or simply kicking his feet in the air.
