1 Tidewater Chapter of the American Guild of Organists... fr o m the Dean Dear Tidewater Chapter members, September is upon us, and most of us are now gearing up for another season of music making! I hope you had a restful summer and had time for non-musical activities. On August 18 th, our Chapter hosted Pedals, Pipes, and Pizza for 15 enthusiastic piano students aged 9-18 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hampton. Special thanks to Marie Bliss for organizing such a wonderful event, to Marj Setnicky, Mark Biondolillo, and Andre Rakus for their teaching and playing, and to Martin Sunderland, Norman Elton, and John Dixon who volunteered to make the day special for our young guests. I hope that we can do this again soon! Our season has been announced and we have some wonderful events planned. Special attention was given to the venue of each concert, to represent the widest range of location. Our jobs and personal lives keep us busy, so concerts and events are a good way of keeping in touch with one another. Please mark your calendars now, and make every effort to support our fellow musicians. One event in particular I want to draw your attention to is Choral Evensong with the Installation of Officers on September 16th, 5:30 p.m. at Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg. This will be one of the last chances to hear the current organ before it is removed and the new Dobson organ is installed. If you have any concerns or questions, please don t hesitate to contact me at kevin.kwan@christandstlukes.org or any member of the Board, who will do all we can to assist you. Let s have a great year! Best wishes, Kevin Kwan Dean, AGO Tidewater Chapter Since 1954 September 2018 issue

3 Report from the AGO National Steering Committee By James Kosnik On Friday, July 6, 2018, I had the honor of attending the AGO National Standing Committee for Sharing Skills and Resources Session which was held at the recent AGO National Convention in Kansas City. The Session was led by Peter Bates, chairman of the Committee for Sharing Skills & Resources. Here is a brief overview: Peter outlined the history and context of the January Jubilee. He addressed the success of recent Jubilees, especially the attendance of AGO non-members who present possible future membership in the Guild. Peter mentioned the flexibility and variety of practical topics which could be included, such as organ registration, hymn playing, conducting from the console, etc. The Committee is concerned about the lack of definite commitments for subsequent Jubilees. Peg Evans implored us to examine the needs of small Chapters around the country; their enthusiasm and interest, in addition to the larger Chapters. Peter summarized the mission of January Jubilee with great enthusiasm, vision and energy. At this point in the session, Peter introduced Charlotte Kroeker, director of CMI (Church Music Institute). She gave a brief overview of CMI, its origins, history and mission. Charlotte then introduced Peggy Evans; Peggy coordinates the organ music subdivision of CMI; Peggy gave a superb presentation on her analysis of organ scores, chorale settings and levels of difficulty, even going so far as to examine individual movements from within a specific chorale partitas to assign their specific levels of difficulty. It is a great privilege for me to serve as a member of the National Standing Committee for Sharing Skills and Resources. Dr. Jim Kosnik SPC, AGO/NPM (dual member of Tidewater & Richmond Chapters) Trinity Episcopal Church, Portsmouth
4 Pedals, Pipes and Pizza! A Report from Marie Bliss Greetings to our Fanfare Newsletter Readers: On Saturday, August 18, 2018 the Tidewater Chapter AGO sponsored a Pedals, Pipes and Pizza program for our young musicians at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hampton, Virginia. A total of fourteen music students ranging in ages from nine to seventeen were greeted by our registration AGO volunteers Marie Bliss, Norm Elton and Marjorie Setnicky. The students were given a backpack that included items such as: The Young Musicians Guide to the Pipe Organ, organ music literature and colorful organ photos from around the world. Also, in attendance from the Tidewater AGO were members John Dixon, (past AGO Dean), Martin Sunderland, (past -immediate AGO Dean). During the first part of morning session, the students watched the video Pipe Organ Encounters followed by Marjorie speaking on the importance of the program, Pipe Organ Encounters. She emphasized these week-long events presented around the United States that positively engage serious-minded organ students toward a deeper understanding through practice and performance. Her talk sparked many new interests from our participating students. The students watched a short video of Olivier Latry playing (rather improvising) during a Catholic Mass at Paris Notre Dame Cathedral on the newly installed console. John Dixon spoke briefly with the students emphasizing the importance of improvisation at the organ within a church service and that reading music alone may not be enough when it comes to serving as a church organist and music director. [Sunday, September 19, 2010, Latry performed at Christ and St. Luke s Episcopal Church in Norfolk, VA. We hope to have him back in the near future to play on the newly refurbished organ once again at Christ and St. Luke s.] Each student also received a small souvenir organ pipe, courtesy of Mary-William Baines. We thank Mary-William for this wonderful contribution. Marie Bliss had the students play their pipes one at a time and then altogether which sounded like a train whistle. What a hoot! Peggy Reinburg (past AGO Dean) also offered several glossy photos of organs from around the world. The students used a paper map and a globe as a guide to find where these pictured organs were located on the maps to peak their interest. Martin Sunderland served as photographer capturing spontaneous and sometimes hilarious moments of our guest organists and students as they engaged in fun learning moments at the pipe organ. All our AGO volunteers enthusiastically interacted with students throughout the day, taking time to listen to students questions and sharing their musical experiences and expertise. Marie Bliss brought her two accordions and concertina for the students to try out and get a feel for traveling organ music. This was a fun lunchtime organ encounter all by itself. Our students and family members had the privilege of listening to three fabulous organists that engaged as well as educated. Our guest organists included: Kevin Kwan (current AGO Dean) - Christ and St. Luke s Episcopal Church, Norfolk, VA., who gave a thoroughly exceptional explanation of the organ console and demonstrated the power and versatility of the Charlie Kegg Pipe Organ with playing Bach s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor.
5 Mark Biondolillo - First United Methodist Church Fox Hill, Hampton, VA. Mark presented a lovely musical arrangement depicting the beauty of Paris Notre Dame Cathedral and its magnificent new organ console. He also used the familiar theme of Amazing Grace to connect this imagery. Beautifully done, Mark! Andre Rakus travelled the furthest for this event. He and his family drove from Beaufort, South Carolina where he is Organist/Choirmaster at Saint Peter s Catholic Church. Rakus entertained and delighted the students with the familiar movie theme music from Star Trek. He began his piece with the zimbelstern bells and sustained beautiful high reed stops that made you feel like were hanging on the edge of universal space. He explored the many Star Trek movie themes that made this piece almost a sing-a-long. Thank you, Andre for your wonderful sense of humor and gorgeous interpretation of one of our favorite movie themes. Even more, Andre was gracious enough to fit Pedals, Pipes and Pizza Saturday morning/afternoon program within an already busy performance schedule that included a Saturday evening recital at Bruton Parish, Williamsburg, VA, followed by a Sunday afternoon recital at First United Methodist Church Fox Hill. During our afternoon session some students played a piano piece of their choice and then went directly to the pipe organ to play the same piece on the organ console. Kevin worked so well with the students, creating registrations that brought their music alive like no other instrument had before. We even had an original composition by one student. What a delight to hear her music played with even more texture and dynamic variance than on the piano. I wish our readers could have seen the amazement on the student s faces as I saw them create what seemed like new music to their ears on this pipe organ. One participating student was from China and has resided only three weeks in America. From what we understand, she has never been in a church and did not even know a pipe organ existed. After the event concluded, it was said of this student that she was hugging the organ bench with one arm while leaning over to play the pedals with her hands. That is the enthusiasm and joy that we professional organists want to share with the younger generation. Hope to see you at our next Pedals, Pipes and Pizza! Thanks to All! Regards, Marie Elena Bliss Organist/Choirmaster, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 250 Fox Hill Road, Hampton, VA, Photos by Martin Sunderland
