Eithe side of the oad thee wee tanks and guns, but as soon as the soldies saw who was in the ca, thee wee only gins and autogaph equests, and nothing to declae! They seek them hee, they seek them ee... eve watchful fans spot the ca and make a quick dash. Roflingout the Blaney Stone JUST PROR to the opening of the Bay City Rolles tou in Glasgow on Sunday night, thee wee mino iots taking place in Dublin and Belfast. They wee not because of any political distubances, but because pop fans n those two places wee able to do something that they dont get a chance to do vey often - watch one of the top pop goups in the wold. The goup? The Rolles. pefoming a couple of wam-up concets befoe the official open - mg, and poving beyond any doubt that Rolles manta is going to bécome dally news n the next few weeks as they tou the county. The Rolles gig n Dublin was thei fist live stage appeaance, apat fom TV wok, that theyve done since thei last tou, and the boys wee petty nevous at the stat. They neednt have woied. The two shows wee both sell-outs, and queues stetched aound the block on the off -chance of any spae tickets. South- en eland s a stange place as fa as pop music s concened, and thei chats eflect all kinds of music, but despite that, the Rolles ae still numbe one, and thei eception moe than Pictues by David Golumb poved t. Duing the second show, a lot of fans whod been unable to get tickets gatheed outside the theate, and a few onlookes stated thowing bottles at the police codon. At the concet hall, the cowds of Rolles fans wee watched caefully by an assotment of police and soldies, but thee was no touble. Appaently, the secuity foces ae delighted when a pop goup does play n Belfast, as t gives the fans a chance to let off steam without thee being any touble! Multiple seaches wee caied out on eveyone enteing the hall, but the most that was found was an assotment of teddy - beas that The Rolles tend to be given by thei fans. The audience esponse was exactly the same as in Dublin - cazy! t only, needed a wave o a smile fom any of the boys, and the fans went wild. R. o., ii; J i, is C. / o We thought:it w ould be nice.,fo people to hea we can dó something moe than justbash THEAES A lot to be said fo compute dating. Les Gay was a woied man until he discoveed it - handsome, lean, fit supe - sta equies pefect patne to allay feas of failue - a tough bill even fo a machine. - But the compute tuned up tumps and came up with something beyond even Less wildest deams - a numbe six position in its chat compilation, staight in afte only a week of elease. Oh Boy - what a elief. Ysee Les and the est of Mud believed in the song as an album tack but none of them wee too sue of ts possibilities as a single. So when the deale eaction came filteing though, and all the adio DJs wee going potty about it, fou happie men you couldnt have found. "We thought it would be nice fo people to hea that we can do something moe than just bash. Like we wee supised when it went in, we wee knocked out about it, because t pobably takes us into a new diection." That is new diection as in new diection fo Mud fans, but in fact the close hamonies an Oh Boy ae nothing new fo the lads themselves. Befoe they wee pesented with the keys to Chatdom, thei set ncluded a lot of Byds and Beach Boys mate - Mai. n fact the fist time head Muds vesion of Oh Boy was n the ba of a Hull hotel at something like one oclock in the moning duing an mpomptu sing - song, and it.sounded mighty impessive then, even without any backing. " think we stated belting Oh Boy off n the ca, pobably inspied by the Seeleye Span thing Rave On," added Les, "and we wee eally enjoying it. Somebody suggested it fo the album so we bashed though it once vey oughly, eveybody just taking a line. Mike (Chapaman) slung one n, and eveyone who was hanging aound slung one n. Quick mind "So when we came to the tack pope we eally woked on it and thought about it. Rob has a vey quick mind fo hamony which hes had to ove have the yeas. " At one point about thee yeas ago, when the band wee going though a boedom stage with thei Pesley outine, they stated to wok out a Buddy Holly medley slot, and Les eckons he ended up with half an execise book full of wods of Holly songs. t got só complicated tying to do it, in the end we dopped the whole thing all togethe," added Les. "We eheased t and eveything but it neve got on stage." n tact the Mud vesion of the song was ecoded with little efeence to Hollys oiginal. Les checked the wods out and the est came fom memoy, but the esulting tack s, Les eckons, the most technically poficient theyve done. "The band. think ae vey talented," admitted Les, and ae pobably not woking to thei limit at all. m not a musician, ve neve claimed to be - m an entetaine, but it might be vey nice fo them to get into that. " Okay, ao Mud have. stomed the chad and the ecod s an ovewhelming success. So what do they put out next and in what diection do they go? "Well watt and see what develops. We wont find out until pobably afte Oh Boy dops out of the chats and we elease ou next me when t will be a matte of eally thinking. Weve had to eally sit down and get ou bains woking. Now know an deal sang - know two ideal songs - that think would be beautiful followups, especially being summe. Theye old songs done in the same vein as Oh Boy. But is it too much! The sang it pobably vey successful because its diffeent but will people take two diffeent things one afte the othe tf we chant* again?"

The duskily lovely lady switched on one of the many diffeent adio channels and, quite coincidentally, head heself singing The Way We Wee. The gogeous soul laden tones poued out in steeo. And she laughed. Not just a laugh of self - satisfaction, fo the lady is vey modest indeed about he achievements. t was moe a laugh of disbelief. She stopped laughing, stated talking. "People think ve had -t this good by eve since stated singing. What they dont ealise is that weve been making ecods eve since 955. Now twenty yeas is a long, long time. t took six long yeas to make the chat in the U.S., and a whole lot longe to beak big anywhee else in the wold. "Those ealy yeas When nothing much happened may have been chaacte - foming, but they sue wee tough." Gladys and he family ae a vey eligious bunch of people. Thpt goes fo the goup - Pips Edwad, cousin of Gladys and fist teno; William, cousin and second teno; Bubba. bothe and baitone. " guess ou eligion sustained us n those ealy!days," says Ola. dys. They cetainly needed something. Fo when the Pips fist hit the oad. t was a tough time fo black entetaines. "Ou ealy gigs wee in the South. whee segegation was still so stong. We thought nothing of giving two sepaate concets to all - white and all - black audiences in the same building the same night. Well, guess we did think about it, but thee was nothing we could do to alte things. Not then,.." Pimitive And most of the easonable hotels wee closed to the goup. They wee all white establishments. So the Pips often stayed in dilapidated hotels and boading houses, most of them without even the most pimitive fom of plumbing. " often got a oom about the size of a match box, and would count myself lucky, because all the boys had to shg,e anothe oom. oughly the same size. Often those guys had only one single bed, and had to take tuns to sleep.". With Gladys being eally such a beautiful chick, and so nice and ;( Pete Jones fiendly with t, thee was also the poblem of unsavouy and leeing guys being aound to peste he. So the Pips sometimes had to take on the ole of potectos and bodyguads. They ae big enough and tough enough to do the job without unnecessay hassles. And should Gladys unexpectedly beak into an all - male ap session. its geneally enough fo a Pip to say: "Gentlemen. thees a lady pesent" fo the language to suddenly get puified! Honesty - Now it may not be fashionable in soul cicles to go on about eligion tut much, but Gladys Knight s the kind of lady who is moe inteested in honesty than being fashionable. "We neve once, duing all those yeas of waiting and the ups and downs of this business, figued on on beaking up. You have to ealise thee wee tough times even when we wee kids, but they wee neve TOO tough, because we wee togethe. Being togethe n spiit is what mattes. Given that, you can lick anything." Gladys has been woking since she was seven. They had this Amateu Hou, a kind of Oppotunity Knocks, on television fom New Yok. and Gladys mum was a fan. And she eckoned he little daughte, then aged seven, could sing the panties off most of the othelittie gils. Paental pide was to be tested. C delicious fied chicken and cake n a shoe box, and that helped make ou ide comfotable." And paental pide was to be justified. Fo little Gladys made the finals, singing Bahms Lullaby, plus Because Of You, and took the gand pize of 2,000 and a tophy with he vision of the old Nat King Cole hit They Ty To Tell Us Wee Tao Young. She ecalls: " eally was too young - too young to get scaed at the dea of singing to that 0 Radio FULL COLOU SLEEVE. * f huge unhidden audience. 21 RECORD MRROR, MAY 3, 975 it - sadnnlsihuin, F hlinsapnmlsaja. A TOUCH OF JET -LAG PLOT: "Second Flight" (EM EMC 3075). Pilot, to my mind, made the mistake of putting all thei cads on the table too quickly. Magic, admittedly, was a song that could have given almost anyone a hit, but Januay, with its stylised vocal and choppy phasing, was definitive Pilot and the elative failue of its successo, Call Me Round, shows that thees not much mileage left in that paticula fomula. Now, with this thei second album, it becomes all too clea that Pilot have few aces up thei sleeves at JMMY OSMÓND (MGM (. What, you may wonde, does small James know about The Good Old Bad Old Days? Vey little -no doubt, but it doesnt dete him. He puts moe gavel nto the Bicusse-Newley numbe than Hoveingham extact fom thei pits in a good week. - Still, one cant say the songs aent well -tailoed to little Jims peculia talents, if you can call them that. Thill to his vituoso endeing of Day 0 (Banana Boat), gasp at his dialogue with the Puple People Eate, and lap up his singles Little Aows and m Gonna Knock On You Doo once again., Funsville time is hee again. CARLY SMON: Playing Possum Elekta ) All-sta cast of thousands fo the long - awaited album elease fom Caly Simon, stating with Richad Pey as poduce and continuing though James Taylo, Caole King, Ringo Sta, Rita Coolidge and Docto John to name but a few. Calys sound is unmistakeable - which can also mean that on fist heaing you tend to think youve head most of the songs befoe. Afte a few plays, tacks begin to stand out in thei own ight, but basically thees an awful lot of deja -vu (o maybe deja -head) about he soud. Apat fom that, though, H you like Caly Simon, youll like this, the songs coming moe fom the No Secets ea than Hot Cakes. As fa as actual playing time is concened, you wont Tmd much moe than about 7 minutes pe side, which to my mind is a bit shot..s. B. this point in time. The whole of the LP is limited to what we aleady know only too well - Patons tight high little voice, the dinky Pilot catch -phases and the familia hythms, which, depending on which way you look at it, ae eithe chic o chi -chi. The songs ae all much too simila. Any numbe of them would do as singles, but taken altogethe, the fae is a bit too unvaied and soon becomes mighty tedious. Unless they can come up with some sweeping changes petty damn quick, dont think Pilot will be with us as a majo foce fo vey long. R.F.-C. J -._,^, AL GREEN: Geatest Hits (London SHU 848) Finally getting the public ecognition he should have been having fo a long time now, its a good time to elease a Geatest Hits album, although established Al Geen devotees will find all the tacks on this album (with the exception of Lets Get Maied, which couldnt find on any_ of my five albums) on peviously eleased LPs. The mateial goes back to 97 and comes ight up to 75 with the inclusion of Sha La La (Make Me Happy). The choice of tacks is good, showing the many moods of M Geen fom sulty to supesoumul, and includes one of the best songs eve, Lets Stay Togethe. Fo people just waking JMMY OSMOND up to Al Geen, go out and buy this and find out just what youve been mising. S. B. TS ALL PLATNUM (All Platinum ) Sample album fom All Platinum, at the nifty pice of 99p which cant be bad in view of the pesent economic climate. Fo you pennies, youll be the poud possesso of 2 tacks by an assotment of people like Sylvia (Pillow Talk), the Rimshots (Whos Got The Monste), the Moments (Love On A Two -Way Steet) and Donnie Elbet lwhee Did Ou Love Gol. Good value. S. B. THE OJAYS: Suvival (Philadelphia ntenational PR 80765) Although not such fequent visitos to the singles chat as they used to be, the OJays ae still poducing some of the best Philly sounds aound, and this album, pod u c e d by Gamble/Huff, shows them at thei best. What they show on this LP is thei ability to delive the whole ange of soul sounds fom out and out funk on Give The People What They Want to the quiete soul hamonies on Let Me Make Love To You. The title tack is a beauty, and d_ eseves a lot of listening, as does the whole album, but when youve got the talents of the OJays, Gamble/Huff and backings by TSOP combined, it should add to a petty good package. t does. S. B. f fita GLEN CAMP- BELL: Reunion (Capitol ESW336) A Glen Campbell sings Jimmy Webb album with aangements by Jim W. himself. On fist thoughts a maiage of Campbells voice to Webbs songs may not seem such. a good idea and, fo one, would have thought Campbell the genial - golfing maniac, fa too level - headed to identify much with the situations Webb descibes. How- eve, despite Glen sounding athe too homely at times, his, intepetative ange fa outstips what would have expected and he does have a feel fo Webbs tunes that sometimes supasses that of the compose. fldslfflhs i`;dmmsallxmt R. F. -C. p/s,ly, w PLOT KE ft TNA TURNER: Sixteen Geat Pefomances (ABC Recods 523) Anyone whos seen ke B Tina on stage will know just how much excitement they manage to geneate. The 6 tacks laid down on this album nclude a lot of thei classic stage numbes: ve Been Loving You Too Long, The Hunte and Youve Got Me Running. One thing you shouldnt expect to find on this album s any of thei moe ecent mateial, as these tacks stop at about 973. S. B. o CARLY SMON,t L AMERCA: Heats (Wane Bothes K565) Past -mastes at quiet hamonies and hythms, Ameica seem to have banched out a bit with thei latest album. Not necessaily in an unpleasant way, thees lust moe of á bite in some of the tacks put thee by slightly heavie use of the instuments. Geoge Matins influence is eve - obvious as poduce and aange, but its those familia acoustic guita iffs and vocal blendings that take oveall dominance. A good un. S. B. GREENSLADE: Time And Tide (Wane Bos. K5626) Recods Oh gawd, hee ae Geenslade getting on whee the Moody Blues got off. Theyve come up with these lofty one wod titles like Time, Tide and Catalan and bought in The Tevea Male Voice Choi to lend thei voices to the poceedings, but all the fa -la -las and stetchy chods in the wold wont disguise the fact that the music is just so much petentious hot ai. Elsewhee thees much scampeing about on a whole ange of n. stuments to little effect and some vocals that ank among the ugliest ve head this o, come to that, last yea. This s exactly the kind of stuff that makes musical snobs out of people..! -C. AL GREEN
