SUNDAY - JUNE 2-5PM CONCERT AT TAFT SCHOOL The culmination of an intensive weekend long workshop, a half dozen talented young singers will be coached in great songs from the 1920's, 30's, 40's, and 50's which are known collectively as "The Great American Songbook."The concert will take place on Sunday, June 2 at 5:00 PM at Woodward Chapel, in a Cabaret showcase featuring teachers and students in performance of the songs learned during the weekend.

4 So long as the human spirit thrives on this planet, music in some living form will accompany and sustain it and give it expressive meaning Aaron Copland For more than eight decades, the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra has played a role in the cultural and civic life of Waterbury and the surrounding communities. We are stewards of a longstanding, evolving tradition, holding true to the impact and excitement that live classical music brings to our greater community. Music Director & Conductor Leif Bjaland partners with the talented musicians of the WSO to uphold that tradition, in concerts ranging from classical masterworks, to multimedia and film presentations, to symphonic pops. These concerts often showcase celebrated guest artists who have helped to enhance the artistic legacy of the Waterbury Symphony through the years. These orchestral endeavors are paralleled by a series of intimate concerts in unique venues, bringing Music in Great Spaces to the neighborhoods in which we live and work. But the mission of the Waterbury Symphony extends beyond its concerts and into the everyday fabric of our region. The musicians that you see on stage are also members of our community. They are teaching artists in the Symphony s Bravo Waterbury! after-school music education program. They are mentors, guiding the next generation of young artists through in-school and side-by-side residencies. They are educators, laying the foundation for musical literacy. They are leaders, bringing individuals and institutions together through the enrichment of shared cultural experiences. The Annual Fund is a pivotal component in the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra s backbone of support. Matthew Daley, organist Matthew Daley has had a passion for music for his entire life. As a child, he began studing with the University of Maryland Professor, Dr.

5 Matthew Daley, organist Matthew Daley has had a passion for music for his entire life. As a child, he began studing with the University of Maryland Professor, Dr. Mikhail Volchok and then later with the Levine School of Music teacher, Grace McFarlane. In 2013, Mr. Daley received his B.M. degree with an emphasis in classical piano from the University of Maryland, College Park, studying under Dr. Larissa Dedova. In 2015, after continuing his studies with Dr. Dedova, he received his M.M. degree at the University of Maryland. While working on his two piano degrees, Mr. Daley simultaneously took organ lessons with Dale Krider, William Neal of the National Symphony Orchestra and later John Walker, Former President of the American Guild of Organists. By the time he completed his master s degree, his passion for the organ was driving him just as intensely as his passion for the piano. Over the course of his musical journey, Mr. Daley became proficient in several other aspects of music, including collaborative piano, voice, violin and the viola. As he has explored music, he has enjoyed sharing his music in various countries including Spain, Italy, South Africa, Canada, Lesotho, Puerto Rico, Australia and Jamaica. He has also enjoyed performing in concerts at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall s Perelman Stage and the Kennedy Center s Concert Hall. In addition to teaching piano, his greatest passion for music comes from playing in churches and he considers it a great honor to have served as one of the organists at Sligo Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Colesville United Methodist Church, Union Baptist Church, New Haven Seventh-day Adventist Church and National Presbyterian Church. In 2017, Mr. Daley accepted a full scholarship to study organ at the Yale University Institute of Sacred Music with Thomas Murray and is expected to complete his second Master s Degree this spring.

Landscape Listens IV. Shadows hold their Breath V. Illumination Prior to turning his full attention to composition, Douglas Hedwig was a professional trumpeter based in New York City. He was tenured with The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra (27 years; retired), and recorded over 40 albums on major international labels in many diverse styles and with many outstanding artists, including, Steve Reich and Musicians, Federal Music Society, Metropolitan Brass Quartet, and the 1977 Grammy Award winning recording of Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" with the Houston Grand Opera. This extensive performance background lends a unique approach to his compositional style. Performers of his composition have commented that the music is challenging, but always enjoyable and gratifying to play or sing. Audience members have described his music as an engaging mix of tension and released, dramatic in its impact. There is often a perceptible underlying "architecture" to his works that unifies diverse and contrasting sections and styles.
