1 BINGO Copy information cards onto cardstock paper, or glue them on to 3x5 cards. Divide class into three teams and the members of each team with one of the three versions of the Bingo boards. Supply beans or papers to cover up answers. Have students alternate picking a card from the information deck of cards. All students should write the information read from the card in the appropriate place on their Bingo boards and then cover it with a paper. The team to first achieve 4 in a row calls Bingo. Continue to play new games until all of the information cards have been read and copied.

The Romantics said personal feelings and experiences were as important as reason. Romantic themes included the idea of nature unspoiled by human touch, solitude, the infinite and unatainable, and the supernatural. These are in the literature of Goethe and Ibson, as well as in romantic music. These themes contrasted with the dark mood in Europe after Napolean s French Revolution The romantic period had new forms. Lizst and Strauss wrote tone poems. These were one movement orchestra pieces that were descriptive or told a story. Irish composer John Field wrote nocturnes-a lyrical melody over an arpeggiated accompaniment. wrote nocturnes and short preludes too. While Mozart wrote a few, art songs became popular in the romantic period. Also called lieder, these were settings of fine poetry. Many piano composers such as, Schumman, and Grieg wrote lieder. Song cycles were a collection of several lieder on one idea to be sung together. Idee fixe means a fixed idea. Berlioz used it in his. It is a small melodic idea that comes back in each movement. In Berlioz work it represents the poet s beloved. Romantic pieces which are meant to depict something besides the music are called program pieces. is writing music that represents one s country. The classic international style was based on German and Italian music. Other countries made their own style using folk songs and dances (such as s), and different modes and scales. Dvorak, Grieg,, and Lizst are examples. is often called the bridge to the Romantic age. His early style period, though mainly classical, begins to show romantic tendencies. Works from his late period, such as the and Op 131 string quartets are fully romantic in their extended forms and use of harmony and color. was an important part of the romantic ideal. Prior to the 19th century old music was rarely performed. That Mozart s Requiem was played at Haydn s funeral is a notable event. In the 19th century concerts of older music became fashionable. Mendelssohn s Bach revival was the most important. In the 19th century amateurs had a great interest in music resulting in many public concerts and private salons, and large amounts of printed music. wrote works for amateur musicians but also for the great virtuosi musicians who were also flourishing in Europe such as. The keyboard was the most popular of instruments in the 19th century. The piano forte had supplanted the harpsichord and clavichord of the earlier century. The Viennese piano had a light, rapid, nasal sound. The English Piano produced the percussive and velvety sound associated with. often replaced the minuet and trio in his works with the scherzo (meaning joke) a quicker, more playful movement. Other dance pieces from society of different nations became the basis of musical works. These included the Waltz,, Polonaise, Polka and. was an imaginary musical society formed by Schummann to dramatize his crusade against the shallow music of his day. Schummann s fictional characters, symbolized his dual personalities, contemplative and dreamy, impetuous and passionate. European opera continued to be popular. Rossini s light, popular works such as the Barber of Seville further developed the opera buffa tradition. Mayerbeer wrote French Grand Operas, large spectacles taken from history,. Wagner further developed the mystical, chromatic German opera tradition. Some composers, like those in the classic period, continued writing for many types of ensembles, other composers like, who wrote mainly for the piano, became specialists. As a result, he exploited the possibilities of piano sounds, with his use of the full instrumental range, and of the pedal. Several contemporaries of such as also showed classic and romantic traits. wrote a lot of music for amateurs, often played at his, musical gatherings for his friends. He is most romantic in his use of harmoniy, displayed in his keyboard works and over 600 lieder. In the latter part of the century Strauss and Mahler followed in the tradition of more chromatic, free forms set by Wagner and Lizst, while followed the more classical style set by and Schumman. Brahms especially was a master of counterpoint and developmental techniques.
