Our glitz and glam gala gathering on 18 August 2018 The Doilie Foundation and the National Youth Orchestra share in the ideal that an arts education is vital for a healthy and happy society.

We want to assist the Doilie Foundation to support its three beneficiaries through their tertiary education, and to provide the basis for the National Youth Orchestra s Bursary Fund that makes it

2 Our glitz and glam gala gathering on 18 August 2018 The Doilie Foundation and the National Youth Orchestra share in the ideal that an arts education is vital for a healthy and happy society. We want every talented and driven young artist, regardless of geographical or financial barriers, to have access to a world class education. Why do this? We want to assist the Doilie Foundation to support its three beneficiaries through their tertiary education, and to provide the basis for the National Youth Orchestra s Bursary Fund that makes it possible for talented and deserving musicians that do not have the means to do so, to access education and career opportunities. These resources are desperately needed by our young artists, given that their plight for a conducive learning environment is still largely unattended and/or insufficiently catered for in the mainstream public education system. We are asking for your contribution, because it will make a lasting difference to these young artists lives, and because, as you know, each artist makes South Africa just that much better!

4 About the National Youth Orchestra Our green-and-gold symphonic team, the National Youth Orchestra, was founded in In its sparkling history it has hosted annual orchestra courses, concerts, international and national tours and workshops for young musicians, and has become one of South Africa s most successful music institutions. Our training pathway has been created to nurture the musical and personal development of South Africa s finest young musicians, from emerging gifted school-age students to those on the verge of a professional career. Along the way our concerts bring delight to thousands. Our alumni are placed in some of the best orchestras across the world, and they make up 70% of the South Africans in our local professional orchestras - many have gone on other career paths but retained the many soft skills learned through playing in an orchestra, including teamwork and discipline. We have performed with a diverse range of local and global artists and personalities including our patron Archbishop Tutu, Sir James Galway, Judith Sephuma, Osmo Vanska, Jimmy Nevis, Barbara Hendricks and Sir Roger Norrington. Currently the Foundation has three young men, at tertiary institutions, in its care - Naledi Dweba, fourth year BMus student at UFS, Thomas Dweba is in his first year at the Academy of Sound Engineering and Fanelo Ndweni is in his first year at Cape Academy of Performing Arts specialising in Classical Ballet.
