1 NEWSLETTER OF THE The Cantones March 2017 SVAS Next Meeting: Sunday April 2, 2017 at Harry s Hofbrau Richard & Larry Denier on the accordion with Dave Dally violinist. Richard and Larry began playing accordion in the early 1960 s at the Neronde accordion studio in Sacramento. Being of Swiss heritage, their repertoire included many folk songs from their home country. As youngsters they competed in both individual and duet categories at the Accordion Conventions prominent in those days. Their accordion playing continued in college, but when their business careers began, Larry found himself on the East Coast and Richard was traveling internationally. The accordions went on the back burners for about 25 years. Then about 15 years ago at their parents 50th wedding anniversary, Larry and Richard surprised them by bringing out their accordions and again performing duets of folk music from Switzerland. Since that time, whenever they get together they pull out the accordions. Larry lives in Santa Barbara and is a member of the Santa Barbara AIMS accordion club. Richard lives in Carmel and can be found every Thursday night performing at Lugano s Swiss Bistro, in The Barnyard at the mouth of Carmel Valley, just off Hwy 1. Dave Dally is an accomplished professional violinist that lives in Carmel Valley and leads the Monterey String Quartet. Dave is very sought after musician and has played at our Club with Joe Domitrowich, Mike Marrottta Band and others. We are very happy to have them back. I would like to take a survey on this meeting s arrangement. Do people like the featured professional performer early in our program? Please let us know, nothing is etched in stone these days and we can change things to the audiences convenience. us or let a Board member know. Ken Caple President We had the opportunity to bring in some small accordions for this event. These little guys usually don t get the show the big ones get. Thank you Norma and Bill for demonstrating them for us. If any one would like to purchase one or get more information call Joe Petosa of Petosa Accordions about the Little Pro (the red one) or Paul Pasquale about the Piermaria (red & white) or his sparkling black Colombo. If you need more play time check with me as I may still have them. All of them sounded great but did have differences that may matter to you. I hope you all enjoyed our Name that Tune game. It is a first for us and if it is known to be popular we could repeat it in the future. Let us know what you think. The Club is looking for a new Photographer. If anyone is interested in volunteering your time to help out the club this is an immediate opportunity. The first was that our featured performers, Due Zighi Baci, performed at 1 pm, because they had an engagement in Cotati later on that afternoon. Luckily many members had read the newsletter and website carefully and were on hand for the performance, which started off with accordionist Sheri Mignano Crawford playing her new B chromatic instrument. She told us that she was trying to challenge her brain by learning to play this instrument with buttons, rather than a keyboard for the treble notes. She also told us that she has acquired a diatonic Cajun-style instrument. Perhaps we will enjoy hearing that one the next time they visit SVAS. She played four songs: Calinda, City of New Orleans, Jambalaya, and While We Danced at the Mardi Gras. Then tenor singer Michael Van Why joined her for the rest of their program. He announced that this was their once-a-year program featuring Mardi Gras and New Orleans music. They started right off with Birth of the Blues. During this song, Michael played a kazoo with a horn attached. He later said that this was called a wazoo but as there is no relevant definition for this word on the internet I suspect he was pulling our legs. Their next number was one that was made famous by Edith Piaf. It was sung in French and was a delightful number whose title translated to You are My Own Carousel. Michael has several flip-chart books that contain the words to the songs they are performing, but he hardly has to refer to a book when he is singing. They followed with Take Me to the Mardi Gras, a song by Paul Simon. We learned that their next number, Roses of Picardy, was written during World War I to commemorate the Battle of Picardy. It was re-popularized in French by Yves Montand after World War II. I have always thought of this song as a ballad, but Sheri and Michael gave it a swing treatment, and Sheri even provided some dance moves by waving her feet. They followed this with a very dramatic rendition of The House of the Rising Sun. A jazzy interpretation of Mack the Knife included six key changes, and they followed that with The St. James Infirmary Blues, a very dramatic story-telling song, which only had four key changes. Michael introduced the next song as something entirely different and really weird, a quirky song in French by the title of Et si tu n'existais pas. This translates to If You Never Existed Why Would I Want to? Michael explained that in addition to immigrants from France, people from Italy also came into the United States through New Orleans. The number called Tuo Vu Fa L'Americano was sung in Italian, with quite a few recognizable words like rock and roll and not Americano. It was fun. Michael brought back his wazoo for the Ballata de Tromba (Ballad of the Trumpet) which was a cute number. They concluded their program with the well-known song When the Saints Go Marching In and some of the verses to this well-known song were not so well-known to me. Perhaps they invented them! Many of us enjoyed singing along on the verses we did know. We all enjoyed their performance very much. They have been performing together for nine or ten years now (Sheri says ten and Michael says nine. ) I ve enjoyed their performances several times previously, and this was my favorite one! After our break, we had the only routine part of our monthly program the raffle! The first two winning tickets and the final one all belonged to Ron Harris, who snagged three of the seven raffle prizes. Other prize winners were young Siyuan Donnelly, Elaine Cooperstein, Steve Marshall and Lou Jacklich. Then we were treated to a short performance by young Siyuan. He announced his own numbers, which included Waltz of the Flowers, Barbara Polka, and Battle Hymn of the Republic. The last song included a bit of a left -hand solo quite impressive! Since I last saw this boy play, he has graduated to a larger instrument, with 120 bass buttons and a full keyboard! I hope he can inspire other young people to take up our favorite instrument!

Bob Stanfield, Gloria and Bill Tapogna, and Ken Caple took turns trying to stump us with a Name That Tune game. Each would play the first few notes of a song and see if anyone in the audience could name it correctly; the first to do so got to choose one of eighteen bottles of wine that were the prizes. Sometimes it took more than the first three notes to get the name, and one song (played by Ken) was never identified. Here s the list. Can you guess which was the mystery song? 7 SILICON VALLEY ACCORDION SOCIETY MARCH 2017 Page 7 The mystry song WONDERLAND BY NIGHT 1959 Edelweiss Song History The Edelweiss is a small white flower that grows in the European Alps in the higher elevations. The Song Edelweiss is a show tune from Rodgers and Hammersteins musical The Sound of Music (1959).The show is about the Captain Von Trapp family s escape from the Nazi regime in Austria. The show s lead actress was Julie Andrews who sang most of the songs. The song was so popular that many people thought it was the National Anthem of Austria or an Austrian folk song which it is not. During the 1970 s this song became so popular that some churches began to use it in the benediction. In order to preserve the exact wording of the song, Rodgers had to take action against the United Methodist Womens Conference for changing the wording of the song. It now must comply with fair use rules per this action. Edelweiss is a beautiful slow waltz that is one of the show industries most memorable pieces. Siyuan Donnelly, The clubs youngest accordionist performed beautifully for us at this meeting. He is excelling in his abilities in playing this instrument. Not only can he play in the standard fashion of the melody on the right hand with the left hand bass, but now he can chord with the right hand as bass and play the melody on the bass buttons. Amazing for such a youngster. Happy Birthday Doris Doris Sprugasci and daughter Linda NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE Gordon Kohl Popular professional Accordionist and Teacher of the accordion will be performing for us in June. Gordon gives classes at many accordion conventions around the country and teaches in Southern California regularly. He and I will be meeting in Texas on Friday to discuss a class that I want him to give to members of our Club. This class will cost $ per person and he will provide hand outs and gives everyone permission to record the class time. If you are interested we will be asking for sign ups at the next meeting. It will be given at Harrys Hofbrau before the meeting on Sunday June 4, from 10:30 am and 12:00. - Ken
