This event begins at 1:00 and we will have all of our members play for entertainment. We will be playing as individuals and as groups. Bring your instrument and join the fun. Start practicing today. The food will be catered by Harry s Hofbrau. Lunch served at 1:00 pm. All the action will begin at 1:00 pm. Desserts are welcome. 2 SILICON VALLEY ACCORDION SOCIETY APRIL 2017 Page 2 Presidents Letter: We just experienced an great day of beautiful music from individuals to bands. Everyone sounded great. The audience was great and we all had fun. This is what it is all about. We had over 80 folks attend our meeting this time. To everyone s delight we saw a new young couple playing the accordion and violin beautifully. They were from Palo Alto and are the brother and sister group of Adam & Emma Dohner. We will try to get them back soon. I hope they join our club and we see them often. Ken Caple President The Denier brothers Richard and Larry were a class act with Dave Dally doing his usual outstanding job as a violinist but then Dave pulled a horn out on us and started impressing all of us with this hidden talent. What a great group. Next month is our Spring Festival. The food will be catered by Harry s like last year we will go Mexican. We need everyone with an appetite and an accordion to show up and play to your hearts content. The entry fee will be the same as last year of $10.00 and the Club will absorb the cost of the food over that amount. Anyone wishing to make and/or bring in a dessert will be appreciated by all. I am still looking for a club photographer. If anyone has the time to take photos at our meetings please contact me. We are looking for volunteers to help out with Club events from time to time. Bill Tapogna Master of Ceremonies It s difficult for this author to admit that the generous and much needed rainfall we experienced these past few months left me longing for the cloudless skies and warm dry days of my favorite season - Spring! MaryBarbara Zorio SVAS Reporter Bright and breezy are hallmarks of Garland Cheatham s musical style. Featuring his beautiful Ferrari Red Roland, he enthralled us with musical selections that included Baby Face, I Don t Know Why, Nothing Could be Finer and other tunes that were reminiscent of times and life experiences gone by. We all felt rejuvenated and ready for the warm summer months with Sue s selection of cheery tunes such as You are My Sunshine and The Happy Wanderer. At Norma s invitation, Adam and Emma Dohner performed at our April meeting. Wow! This was a performance not to be missed. This sister and brother duet has been playing together for 20 years. Considering Emma is 25, they ve literally had a lifetime to perfect their act! With Adam on accordion and Emma on violin they entertained our audience of nearly 100 with complex tunes such as Tarantello Napolitana, La Foule, Ava s Polka, and Indifference. This talented duo is part of a band called Garf s Uncle that performs at The Freewheel Brewery in Redwood City and at local farmers markets in the area. You can also hear them on youtube Anyone who attended Harry s April meeting quickly awoke from their long winter s hibernation at the first notes of Happy Days are Here Again. The Happy Days Band never fails to extend the invitation to come out and play after the long rainy months of February and March. Toes a-tappin and hands a-clappin to the strains of such favorites as Pennsylvania Polka and Waiting for the Robert E. Lee were the norm as these practiced musicians opened the meeting. No doubt even the robins joined our enthusiastic audience who couldn t resist singing along to T to w st W m in L M tr pu m w Welcome New Members: Pamela Tom & Luyuan Zhao

Thanks to Gloria and Bill Topagna for providing the prizes. he last time The Cantones visited SVAS they performed a selection of Swiss music. This time they geographically moved their reperire west to France. Brothers Richard & Larry Denier on accordions with Dave Dally on trumpet and violin introduced their performance ith the French national anthem, La Marseillaise. C est Magnifique, Fete Musette, Mr Sandman, La Vie en Rose, among other French andards completed their set. Richard informed us that How Ya Gonna Keep 'em Down on the Farm (After They've Seen Paree?) is a orld War I song that rose to popularity after the war had ended. The lyrics highlight concern that American soldiers from rural environents would not want to return to farm life after experiencing the European city life and culture of Paris. The Cantones can be heard playg every Thursday night performing at Lugano s Swiss Bistro in Carmel and at The Barnyard, also in Carmel. arry Dernier plays a MIDI accordion. What exactly is a MIDI accordion? IDI - the Musical Instrument Digital Interface - was designed to allow electronic music generating equipment e.g. a keyboard, to conol electronic sound generating equipment. MIDI accordions are standard accordions that have some form of key recognition electronics t in them that sends a signal (or message as MIDI signals are called) to a sound producing box. You can do all sorts of things with your usic once you have played it in MIDI form, you can store it i.e. record it and then edit it and then even print it out as a score and then hen you play it back, you can play it back using different instruments and orchestrations. o turn your face to the sun, dig in the earth, start planning and planting your gardens, and be sure to mark your calendar for SVAS s next usical meeting, the Annual Picnic, on Sunday, May 7!
