3 Music Technology Resources On A Shoestring Ear- training and literacy There are lots of excellent free ear- training and literacy games and resources available online. Here are my current favourites: The Music Interactive Link: The Music Interactive site has a range of fantastic downloadable games suitable for primary and middle school students (older students may enjoy them too). You ll need to sign up to their forum in order to get access to the download links. Some of their many games (more on the website): Staff Wars 1 Staff Wars 2 Jama Mambo (rhythm dictation for young students) Rhythm dictation (older students) Drawn to Keys Theta Music Trainer Link: Some good quality, innovative games available on this site. Most of the lower levels of each game are free and you can pay a subscription to access higher levels. The site also keeps track of your progress and suggests areas for improvement! Parrot Phrases (melodic dictation) Dango Brothers (tuning) Chord Spells (spelling chords) Chord Locks (type, position, number) Channel Scramble Speed Pitch (higher/lower/same) Plus more! 3

5 Noteflight Link: About Noteflight: Use online no need to download, need internet connection Students collaboration possible due to online nature Easy to use Best for young students and beginners Limited staves Excellent set of resources for educators Other links: Noteflight learning activities: Youtube videos: Blank Sheet Music Link: Create your own custom- designed blank manuscript paper: Print the paper as is, keeping the default settings Click on the Advanced tab and choose a different scale to increase or decrease the space between the stave lines. Hint: the largest size (2) is a useful for young students to write on Customise the manuscript further if you wish, by adding clefs, key signatures and time signatures and grouping staves together You can even keep your customised manuscript settings by creating a user name and saving your favourite set- ups in a folder 5
