1 TORONTO REGION NEWSLETTER December 2011 January 2012 In this issue: Web: A welcome boost for Lake MacDonald 1 Playing opportunities 6 Readings and Workshops 2 Concert listings 6 CAMMAC RPS 2 Superb Sudoku 7 January Workshop Rodrigo Chavez 3 Advertising Rates 8 January Reading (J.S. Bach) 4 Regional Management Committee 8 February Reading (Guastavino) 5 A welcome boost for the Lake MacDonald Music Centre By Blair Mackenzie On October 30, CAMMAC heard the welcome news that the Province of Quebec has agreed in principle to provide a grant of $753,000 to CAMMAC. The purpose of the grant is to enable CAMMAC to expand its sewage and wastewater treatment system and to deal with a number of other issues, postponed until now for cost reasons, left over from the construction of the new Music Centre. The amount represents approximately 90% of the expected total cost of the work to be done. CAMMAC is now preparing tenders for the work. The issues are perhaps not glamorous ones, but they are nevertheless decidedly important. The grant is significant not only because it should enable CAMMAC to clean up a number of legacy issues relating to the Music Centre, but also because it represents a clear vote of confidence by the Government of Quebec and the Region in CAMMAC, its leadership, and its vision for the music centre. This is a message which can and should be welcomed by all of us. This vote of confidence is particularly welcome in the light of the very challenging circumstances which CAMMAC has had to contend with over the last six or so years. Good on you, CAMMAC. 1

2 SCHEDULE OF READINGS SEASON Once a month, CAMMAC singers and instrumentalists get together and read through a work for choir and orchestra under the direction of a professional conductor. 4 A CAMMAC (Canadian Amateur Musicians /Musiciens Amateurs du Canada) Toronto Region Event. Please copy and post. CAMMAC READING J. S. Bach: Cantatas 65 and 79 Date SUNDAY, January 22, 2012 Time 2 PM SHARP TO 4:30 PM (Please arrive 15 minutes early to set up) Conductor Mervin Fick Biography Music notes Mr. Fick is Artistic Director of the Mississauga Choral Society (MCS). He developed the MCS Young Listeners outreach program, an innovative program of music and art. He conducts the PCS Singers of Brampton, Toronto Beach Chorale, and Esprit Chamber Choir, and is Minister of Music at Bloordale United Church. Mr. Fick has led several successful European tours with a choir he formed for these tours. A graduate of the U. of T. Faculty of Music, he has diplomas in vocal performance and vocal pedagogy from the Royal Conservatory of Music, as well as a Colleague Diploma and a Certificate in Service Playing from the Royal Canadian College of Organists. Bach Cantata #65: This is a Christmastide cantata par excellence: splendid in its setting, festive in expression, with its dancelike character playing a splendid role. This Advent cantata, for the Feast of Epiphany, tells of the visit of the three Wise Men from the Orient, coming to present their gifts to the new-born Christ in the Bethlehem stable. Bach Cantata #79: The opening line of text comes from one of the most friendly and pastoral of all the Psalms, #84. "God, the Lord, is sun and shield" is a chorus more spectacularly military than any other piece in his output. It is one of the most energetic works he ever wrote. Place Christ Church Deer Park, 1570 Yonge St (2 blocks north of St Clair Avenue) in Elliott Hall (enter from Heath Street) Singers Choir SATB. (Note: singers do not need to pre-register) Instrumentation Flutes 1 and 2, bassoon, horns 1 and 2, trumpet, tympani, strings. CAMMAC READING Carlos Guastavino: Indianas Date SUNDAY FEBRUARY 12, 2012 Time 2 PM SHARP TO 4:30 PM (Please arrive 15 minutes early to set up.) Conductor Isabel Bernaus Biography Music notes Born in Catalonia (Spain) and trained as a musician in both Europe and America, Isabel Bernaus is an accomplished conductor and music educator. She has studied in Spain, France, and Quebec, where she attained a Master s Degree in Music Education at Laval University. More recently, she pursued choral studies at Rider University in New Jersey. Since moving to Toronto in 1999, Isabel has become conductor of two community choirs (Common Thread and Settlement Community Choir), and a chamber choir (The Jubilate Singers). She also teaches music at Sheridan College and at Haliburton School of the Arts at Fleming College. Enjoy the beauty and challenge of "Indianas", a set of six delightful songs for mixed choir and piano by world renowned composer Carlos Guastavino. The program will be completed with various Argentinian selections, including some of the "Piezas Sacras" from the amazing composer Fernando Moruja and some tangos arranged for choir. One of the foremost Argentine composers of the 20th century, Carlos Guastavino ( ) wrote over 500 works, most of them songs for piano and voice, many still unpublished. His style was quite conservative, always tonal and lusciously romantic. Place Christ Church Deer Park, 1570 Yonge St (2 blocks north of St Clair Avenue) in Elliott Hall (enter from Heath Street) Singers Choir SATB. (Note: singers do not need to pre-register) Instrumentation This is a reading for singers only.
