I could give the dinner to thank both of them for stretching my awareness of music. Suba and Kevin have a connection at least through Suba s husband Dylan Bell: Dylan and Kevin formed part of the vocal band Cadence. Of course I don t mean to give priority to one or the other artist: each style and material is quite different. Kevin s bass voice shows well, whether he sings classical pieces or the many kinds of popular music, starting with the 1960s. One of his specialties is vocal imitation of musical instruments. Currently Kevin performs with the Swingle Singers, based in London, England, taking part in an extensive repertoire. I met Kevin first during a one-week course: he opened my ears to different music by leading a group of us in jazz singing. Bit by bit, I continue to listen and sing. Many people know Suba as the lead singer of Autorickshaw, the band using Indofusion music she started. Her voice, covering a DINNER GUESTS wide range, gives great pleasure. More important to me than listening to her band, was a workshop she led together with Ed Hanley, an Autorickshaw member who plays tabla classical percussion from north India. Suba shows the pulse (unusual to Western ears) with handclaps, and teaches the notes by rote. The afternoon with the two of them opened such a view to me: tradition going back thousands of years, with a spiritual component, music that s an essential part in the life of its audience. And then the performers can reach a great age and still retain the listeners respect. If one can no longer reach the required note, one points up or down. What would I feed them? As long as I dare ask them, it would depend on what I find at the St. Lawrence Market nearby. I d invite some friends too perhaps we could perform something among us. But I m dreaming forgive me. I owe it all to CAMMAC! Ellen Frei efrei@sympatico.ca AND/OR ADDRESS CHANGES Whenever your contact information changes, please remember to notify CAMMAC headquarters. 5 A CAMMAC (Canadian Amateur Musicians - Musiciens Amateurs du Canada) Toronto Region Event. Please copy and post. SINGERS & INSTRUMENTALISTS CAMMAC READING HAYDN: LORD NELSON MASS Date: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2009 Time: Conductor: Music: Biography: 2 PM SHARP. Please arrive 15 minutes early to set up. WILLIAM SHOOKHOFF Haydn's reputation was at its peak, but his world was in turmoil... For Haydn... writing the Mass in the late summer of 1798, the mood in Eisenstadt was one of foreboding, to the point of terror, and this is what we hear as the great work opens: Haydn chose to write the opening measures in the key of D minor. During the course of the composition the mood shifts as the predominant, and concluding tonality is D major. Haydn s names for this mass was Missa in Angustiis ('mass for times of distress'). (from Wikipedia) William Shookhoff has enjoyed an extensive career as conductor, vocal coach and pianist. He has served on the music staff of the Edmonton, Canadian, and Netherlands opera companies, was Associate Music Director for both Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables, and has worked with such notable singers as Richard Margison, Teresa Stratas, Samuel Ramey, and Joan Sutherland. As an educator, he has held positions at Wilfrid Laurier University, the University of Toronto, and the University of Alberta. He has conducted numerous orchestras and choirs throughout North America, as well as in Europe and China. Currently he resides in Toronto in semi-retirement, where he continues to be active as Director of Opera by Request. He has recently guest conducted with Brampton Lyric Opera, Bluebridge Festival, and Tryptych Productions, and will be conducting a new opera by noted British composer Robert Crowe in Vienna in October. Place: Singers: Instrumentation: Instrumentalists: Christ Church Deer Park, 1570 Yonge Street (2 blocks north of St. Clair Avenue) in Elliott Hall (enter from Heath Street). Choir (SATB). Flute I, oboe I & II, bassoon I & II, trumpet I & II, timpani, violins I & II, violas, cellos, double basses Please register in advance with Kathleen Mackenzie, , k_mackenzie@sympatico.ca so that we can bring enough copies of the parts! For further information call Ricci Balogh at Dates for the season: Oct.23 (coached tba.), Nov.20, Dec.11, Xmas workshop (coached tba.), Jan.8, Feb.5, Feb.26 (coached tba), March 19, April 16, Sunday, April 25, Spring Workshop (coached tba.), May 7, May 28 OBITUARY: GLADYS OLDFIELD GLADYS OLDFIELD, died early June, 2009, was born in 1930 in London, England. Gladys touched the lives of many through her love of music; piano, choral, harpsichord, violin and her involvement in CAMMAC, as well as through her proud nursing role at Women's College Hospital ( ). Although the last few months of her life were hard fought, her family and friends will remember her simple mannerisms and pleasures: Her causal address of those close to her as 'luv', the perfectly steeped cup of Earl Grey, the indulgence of the daily newspaper and her being equally swept away by a stirring chamber music piece and the theme from Hockey Night in Canada. A celebration of Gladys' life was held at the family home in Stouffville, Ontario. A NOTE TO ASPIRING VOCAL SOLOISTS Most of the pieces that we work on at our Sunday readings have vocal solo parts. Sometimes members of the choir sing these parts together. Sometimes the conductor invites his/her own soloists, sometimes we find people to sing these parts at readings. If you are an experienced singer and you d like to give it a try, please get in touch with the reading coordinator or with Kathy Gallyas at least a month ahead of the reading date so this possibility can be discussed. Kathy Gallyas, , kathy.gallyas@gmail.com PLAYING / SINGING OPPORTUNITIES RPS, See page 4 for dates and times of recorder players meetings and workshops. 7 CAMMAC - ONTARIO MUSIC CENTRE Once again, the Ontario Music Centre enjoyed a wonderful two weeks on the Lakefield campus, with an extraordinary faculty and a solid group of happy and productive campers, both new and those who were returning for another year. Participant evaluations were overwhelmingly positive and OMC committee members are now reviewing them as they make plans for next year s program. The committee met in September and re-elected Joy Simmonds as Chairperson. This year the committee structure has been enhanced and dynamic new members elected to provide the chair with extensive support and expertise. The Committee wishes to thank Barbara Adams for her long tenure as Chairperson of the Marketing Committee. We are thrilled that Michael Occhipinti, 8 time Juno nominated jazz guitarist will continue on as our Artistic Director. Prior to this year s camp, Michael was featured on radio and online, and we know that this media exposure had a positive effect on registrations. More of the same is planned as a lead-up to next year s camp. Stay posted for news on our 2010 season! Joy Simmonds Chairperson CAMMAC Ontario Music Centre joy.simmonds@sympatico.ca HEAVENLY SOUNDS St. Peter asks the person in front of the pearly gates, "What did you do in life?" The reply - I was a physician - brought a generous smile from St. Peter who said, "Very noble profession, you are welcome in heaven. Of course, there's nothing for you to do here as we have no illness of any kind, but you are most welcome in heaven. The bar on the left goes on forever, the buffet on the right goes on to eternity, and the pink fluffy looking cloud in the middle is where God hangs out; feel free to talk to God, eat and drink as much as you like; you are welcome in heaven." St. Peter asks the next person, "What did you do in life?" The reply - I was a lawyer - brought a disgruntled look as St. Peter rolled his eyes and said, "Well, everyone is welcome in heaven. Of course, there's nothing for you to do here as we have no crime or ill will or accidents of any kind, but you are welcome in heaven. The bar on the left goes on forever, the buffet on the right goes on to eternity, and the pink fluffy looking cloud in the middle is where God hangs out; feel free to talk to God, eat and drink as much as you like; you are welcome in heaven. St. Peter asks the next person, "What did you do in life?" The reply - I was a jazz bassist - brought an excited response of delight as St. Peter excitedly said, "You're going to love it here! The jam sessions go on forever! And you can play with Miles, or Trane, or Bill Evans. Duke Ellington writes a new piece for the band every day. There's plenty of solo space, no weird keys, nothing out of tune, no bad notes, no bad changes, and the timing is always rock solid - you're going to love it here! Oh, by the way, you didn't park out front, did you? Stay away from the bar and the buffet table - and don't try to talk to God - he's busy. Could you come in through the loading dock? And do you have a sound system we could use during breaks?" 7 THANKSGIVING WEEKEND AT LAKE MACDONALD Following the back-to-school frenzy, here is a grand pause for getting together with family and friends and rejoicing with music from Friday evening October 9th to Monday 2 pm October 12. Details of the program, teachers and activities are on the web as well as the prices and registration form. Spread the good news! Elizabeth Little, Artistic Director SUPERB SUDOKU Nine different letters are used in this SUDOKU. Each letter is used exactly once in each row, column, 3x3 box and the two long diagonals within the grid. To start, look in the most populated boxes, rows and columns for missing letters. If you end up with more than one possibility, use common sense to eliminate the extra letters. Keep in mind that no letter can appear more than once within a box, row, column or long diagonal! After solving the puzzle itself, there remains a second step: you have to find the one or two word musical terms made up of those 9 letters when placed in the correct order. Good luck!
