2 The Composer Deborah Baker Monday currently teaches in the Logan City School District Orchestra Program in Logan Utah. She is a cello/bass specialist who works with 4th through 8th grade students in several schools. Ms. Monday received her B.M.E. rom Florida State University with an emphasis in strings and an M.M. in Composition rom the University o Alabama. She began working on a D.M.A. at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge while teaching string classes at the 4th through th grade levels. Ms. Monday is an active bass perormer and private teacher. She has served as an adjunct bass instructor at Utah State University or several years has been on the aculty o the Utah ASTA with NSOA Bass Fest and has served as a clinician at the Midwest Clinic ASTA with NSOA National Conerence and various state music educators conventions throughout the country. In 999 she was named the Utah ASTA with NSOA Elementary Teacher o the Year and she also received the award or Superior Accomplishment at the 003 Utah Music Educators Association Conerence acknowledging her exceptional contributions to educational music or young string players. Ms. Monday was declared winner o the 006 Utah ASTA Composition Competition or her composition Chant-Formations. Ms. Monday has many publications to her credit including three collections coauthored with Janice L. McAllister Strings Extraordinaire! Holidays Extraordinaire! and More Strings Extraordinaire! She is also coauthor (with Robert S. Frost) o Artistry in Ensembles. The Composition Antique Echoes is a resh approach to an old practice: writing in medieval modes rather than major or minor keys. Although this composition is not centered around one speciic mode it borrows rom the modal tradition by using a succession o whole and hal steps diering rom the major and minor scale system. While studying this piece conductors should take the opportunity to review the structure o scales and modes with an historical perspective. The piece consists o three sections each with a dierent meter but centered on the tonality o A. The style ranges rom very smooth and expressive to strongly rhythmic and accented and students will be required to execute the appropriate bow articulations. Young players may eel a sense o amiliarity with the modal lavor o Antique Echoes because o the wide use o modes in today s pop music.
