She is part o the award-winning orchestra teaching team in the Logan City School District as well as a private teacher and requent perormer She was named the Secondary Teacher o the Year in 99 by the Utah Chapter o the American String Teachers Association and honored by the Utah Music Educators Association with their Superior Accomplishment Award or the year She is a past president o the Utah State Chapter o ASTA and was selected to be a participant in the apan ulbright Memorial und Teacher rogram or 00 Robert S rost earned his bachelor s and master s degrees in Music Education rom Utah State University and his doctorate in Music Education rom the University o Northern Colorado He has held leadership positions in state and national organizations most recently as resident o the Utah State Chapter o the American String Teachers Association (000 00) He has served as guest lecturer and clinician and has conducted honor and clinic orchestras at many state national and international music educators conerences Dr rost is retired rom the Cache County School District (Utah) ater dedicating 0 years as a string specialist having taught strings and orchestras at all levels He directs the Cache Symphony Orchestra maintains a private studio and is active as a composer arranger author clinician and adudicator He holds membership in NAME ASTA ESTA and ASCA Dr rost is the co-author o the All or Strings Artistry in Strings and Viva Vibrato Additionally he has over 50 published works to his credit including most recently String Techniques or Superior Musical erormance and Rhythm Techniques or Superior Musical erormance Dr rost and his wie Dona reside in Smithield Utah and are the parents o ive children The Arrangements Vive la Canadienne! ( Long Live the Canadian Girl ) was the Canadian national anthem in the nineteenth century until it was supplanted by O Canada In 99 it became the oicial march o the Royal nd Regiment and Canada s renchspeaking military regiment in Quebec The melody consists o two contrasting themes: the irst a march theme supported by strong-short ater-beats and the second lyrically played with more connected legato bow strokes oth themes provide strong cadences or appropriate phrasing A dramatic change in dynamics is essential at m on the repeat in order to allow or the crescendo that brings the march to a rousing conclusion An Emigrant s Daughter is said to be the true and tragic tale o an Irish immigrant in the 0s The original tune was the old English song The Grenadier and the Lady This haunting melody calls or well-developed right and let hand techniques a rich expressive vibrato in the let hand and a sensitive and controlled bow stroke to gently shape phrases Melodic lines need beautiul legato bowing izzicatos should be vibrated (m 0) with a eeling o strong/weak or phrase o typical in meter Harmonics require a very light LH inger touch with controlled bow weight and moderate bow speed Northland rolic consists o two Canadian olk tunes I se the ye is a raucous Newoundland song about a braggart who builds his boat then sails o to catch ish and a girl It s set in an era when cod was king boats were necessary or travel and maggoty butter was a act o lie The brisk meter with hooked bowings requires a ast bow stroke ( shoot the bow ) Grace notes moving to open string chords imitate bagpipes part o the Canadian heritage Make a real style contrast at m with expressive legato bow strokes Isolating the scale-like movement at m 7 beginning with the bass/cello will help students master the technical demands o this ast section SAMLE The Mouth o the Tobique (pronounced toe-beek ) is a rench-canadian reel the most popular tune type in the Irish dance music tradition Reels are ound in much o the music o Québec Reels generally have the same two-part structure an A and part consisting largely o eighth note movement with accents on the irst and third beats o the bar This reel is dierent It has an A and C part structure with strong syncopation in the C section Teach the irst melody together: /ass beginning at m 9 nd Violin/Viola at m 0 In any ast ingery section practicing with dierent rhythms (ex: long/short short/ long etc) will clean up technical passages ar aster than many repetitions as is Students need to be at the rog or each triplet pickup (ex: nd Vln/Vla at m 00) hrase o each o the couplets at m 0 The biggest challenge will be the syncopation beginning at m 7 Strong accents bowed near the rog are vital!
