Lesson 10 Creating a Pick-Up Bar The easiest way to create a pick-up bar (or anacrusis) is when you are in the Time Signature and Tempo window during the initial score setup process (m Refer back to Lesson 4 for more details), but in the event you forgot or you changed your mind, you can still add a pick-up bar in the following way: HOT KEY! Go to the main menu at the top of the screen and choose Create>Time Signature or type the letter T on your computer keyboard.

36 to SIBELIUS 6 In the Time Signature window tick the box Start with bar of length and choose the desired bar length from the drop down list, then deselect the box where it says Rewrite bars up to the next time signature and click OK. Next point-click on your score at the beginning of the first full bar

Lesson 10: CREATING A PICK-UP BAR 37 and Sibelius will insert the pick-up bar. Now select the time signature in the first full bar of your score and type Delete on your computer keyboard.

38 to SIBELIUS 6 I would like to make you aware of the fact that if you are creating a pick-up bar on a score that already has music written on it, as soon as you type Delete, a warning message will appear on the screen saying: Do you want to rewrite the following bars? ; answer No and move on. Notice that Sibelius automatically numbers pick-up bars as bar 0 and the first complete bar as bar 1, rather than bar 2 as it would otherwise be in a normal situation.

Lesson 27 Flipping Notes & Other Objects HOT KEY! If you find yourself in a situation where you need to reverse a note(s) stem(s) to improve the look of your score, select the note(s) in question then go to the main menu at the top of the screen and choose Edit>Flip or type the letter X on your computer keyboard.

122 to SIBELIUS 6 HOT KEY! Besides being able to flip notes stems, you can also use the Flip function to reverse the position of other musical elements such as slurs, ties, staccato marks, tenuto marks and other articulations attached to a note(s); simply select the object in question and type the letter X to reverse its position. Be aware that some articulation marks (e.g. up/down bow, marcato, ordinary fermata, etc.) are not allowed to be flipped because by default they are set to always be positioned above the notes, regardless of their stem direction. HOT KEY! To change the articulations default positioning behaviour, go to the main menu at the top of the screen and choose House Style>Engraving Rules (Ctrl+Shift+E or Cmd+Shift+E on the Mac). In the Engraving Rules window select the Articulation page, then from the Always above row, deselect the articulation(s) that you want to be able to flip (e.g. ordinary fermata).

Lesson 35 Creating Triplets & Tuplets DEFINITION: A tuplet in Sibelius is referred to as a rhythm that is played at a fraction of its normal speed, such as a triplet. It is drawn as a single number or a ratio above or below the notes, often with a bracket to show which notes it applies to. The word tuplet is actually a music software jargon, in the real music world tuplets are usually called irrational rhythms or irregular divisions and occasionally referred to as poly-rhythms or counter-metric rhythms (definition taken from the glossary section of the Sibelius 6 manual). CREATE A TRIPLET To create a triplet, start by inputting or selecting only the first note then go to the main menu at the top of the screen and choose Create>Tuplet.

146 to SIBELIUS 6 For example, if you want a triplet with a total length of a dotted quarter note (dotted crotchet), the first note to input should be an eighth note (quaver). In the Tuplet window type the number 3 and choose from the left-hand side column whether you would like the triplet to be shown with a number (3), ratio (3:2), ratio+note or nothing at all; use the right-hand side column to choose the desired bracket option. By default Sibelius creates triplets and tuplets with the Auto-bracket option switched on; this means that when you create a triplet the bracket disappears if there is a beam joining exactly the same notes as the bracket would. In the case of a tuplet, the bracket will disappear if it is at the beam end of the notes. Click OK and the triplet will be created with the correct number of rests; add the other notes as normal (m Refer back to Lessons 20 & 21 for more details on how to input notes). QUICK TRIPLET CREATION HOT KEY! The quickest way to create a triplet is to input or select the first note then type Ctrl+3 on your computer keyboard (Cmd+3 on the Mac).

Lesson 35: HOW TO CREATE TRIPLETS & TUPLETS 147 CREATE A TUPLET To create a tuplet, input or select only the first note then go to the main menu at the top of the screen and choose Create>Tuplet. In the Tuplet window type a number and choose the desired tuplet options like you did before; add the other notes as normal. Sibelius will warn you if you create a tuplet that is too long to fit into the current bar.

148 to SIBELIUS 6 QUICK TUPLET CREATION HOT KEY! The quickest way to create a tuplet is to input or select the first note then type Ctrl+2 through 9 (depending on the rhythmic value needed) on your computer keyboard (Cmd+2 through 9 on the Mac). CMD/CTRL+2 = Duple CMD/CTRL+3 = Triple CMD/CTRL+4 = Fours (often used in 3/4 time) CMD/CTRL+5 = Five CMD/CTRL+6 = Six CMD/CTRL+7 = Seven CMD/CTRL+9 = Nine HOT KEY! If after creating a tuplet you decide that you want to change its appearance on the score, first select the number or bracket then go to the toolbar at the top of the screen and click the Properties icon (Ctrl+Alt+P or Cmd+Option+P on the Mac).

Lesson 35: HOW TO CREATE TRIPLETS & TUPLETS 149 In the Edit Tuplet window select the Notes tab and then use the two drop down menus to choose the desired tuplet properties (e.g. number and no bracket, ration+note and bracket, etc.). HOT KEY! HOT KEY! HOT KEY! After creating a tuplet you can edit the bracket s inclination by selecting the left or right end and dragging it up or down with the mouse; alternatively use the computer keyboard s Up and Down ( / ) arrows. If needed, use the left and right ( / ) arrows to extend the bracket s ends to the left or to the right. Remember that you can also use the letter X on your computer keyboard to flip the bracket position above or below the notes (m Refer back to Lesson 27 for more details). To delete a tuplet, simply select the number or bracket and type Delete on your computer keyboard; this will delete the number and bracket as well as all the notes, because without the tuplet the notes would no longer add up to the correct rhythm. To copy a tuplet, select the number or bracket and copy it to the Sibelius clipboard using Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on the Mac), then select a note or rest where you want to copy the tuplet to and type Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on the Mac) to paste it from the Sibelius clipboard onto the selected note/rest. This method only copies the tuplet s number and bracket without the actual notes.

150 to SIBELIUS 6 ADDING BRACKETS TO TUPLETS Now let s look at how you can change the look or appearance of an existing or new Tuplet (when I talk about tuplets I am referring to Triplets, Quintuplets, etc. Basically irregular note groups). Now, by default Sibelius creates Tuplets with the bracket set to auto bracket, this means that depending on the tuplet duration (in notes value) the bracket may or may not appear on the Tuplet. For example any time you create a triplet which contains three eight notes, the bracket automatically disappears and only the number 3 is shown. At this point, if I want to have a triplet with the number as well as the bracket, first I need to click on the triplet number (3) then go to the Sibelius toolbar at the top of the screen and choose the Properties icon (the Properties window is the place where you can edit and change the attributes of text styles, notes, playback lines and so on. During the course of the book I refer to this window quit a bit). On the Edit Tuplet dialogue window select the Notes tab and then use the Bracket drop down menu and choose Bracket.

Lesson 35: HOW TO CREATE TRIPLETS & TUPLETS 151 Now the Triplet displays with the number as well as the bracket. Be aware that whenever you click on the Properties icon on the toolbar, the dialog window that appears on screen (see screen shot on page previous) takes the name from the score object that was selected beforehand, in other words, if I select a piece of text and then open the Properties dialogue window, this will take the name of Edit Text because a text style was selected prior to opening this window. In the case of the Triplet this window will take the name of Edit Tuplet. The Number drop down menu (see bottom left-hand side of screen shot on page previous) allows you to have just the Tuplet number or ratio or even ratio plus note. BRACKETS & RATIOS To shed some light on the ratio option: This is actually very easy to understand. The ratio gives you two numbers like 3:2 (in a eight note Triplet which equals 1 quarter note), the number 3 indicates that there are 3 eight notes within the Triplet duration while the number 2 indicates that normally within the same duration (1 quarter note) there are only 2 eight notes. Basically a 3 over 2 ratio. In this other situation I have one quarter note Quintuplet for the duration of a complete 4/4 bar: The number 5 indicates that there are 5 quarter notes within this Tuplet duration (quintuplet) while the number 4 indicates that normally within the same duration (a full 4/4 bar) there are only 4 quarter notes. Basically a 5 over 4 ratio.

152 to SIBELIUS 6 Triplet (3) Ctrl/Cmd+3 Quintuplet (5) Ctrl/Cmd+5 Septuplet (7) Ctrl/Cmd+7 Nontuplet (9) Ctrl/Cmd+9 TUPLET TABLE Too long to fit into the bar 5 Too long to fit into the bar Too long to fit into the bar Too long to fit into the bar

Lesson 65 Hide & Show Empty Staves HIDE SELECTED EMPTY STAVES Sometimes you may find yourself in situations where you have a stave(s) containing only bar rests that you want to hide from a particular system; in order to achieve this do as follows: HOT KEY! Double-click on the stave to select it (single stave system selection) then go to the main menu at the top of the screen and choose Layout>Hide Empty Staves; alternatively use the computer keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Alt+H or Cmd+Shift+Option+H on the Mac. You can also do this to several staves, a passage lasting as many bars as you like or even to the whole score. The staves will be hidden only on systems where they have no music or where all the music is hidden (e.g. cue passages).

302 to SIBELIUS 6 HIDE ALL EMPTY STAVES HOT KEY! To hide empty staves throughout the score, go to the main menu and choose Edit>Select>Select All (Ctrl+A or Cmd+A on the Mac) then choose Layout>Hide Empty Staves; all the unused staves will disappear and the whole score will instantly reformat to fit on fewer pages. HOT KEY! HOT KEY! SHOW PREVIOUSLY HIDDEN STAVES To re-show a stave(s) that you have previously hidden, click on a bar where you want to show the stave(s) then go to the main menu at the top of the screen and choose Layout>Show Empty Staves; alternatively use the computer keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+Alt+S or Cmd+Shift+Option+S on the Mac (refer to screen shot on page previous). In the Show Empty Staves window simply click OK to show all the hidden staves (all the staves are already selected by default) otherwise pick the desired one(s) you want to show and click OK (use Shift+click to select adjacent staves or Ctrl+click/Cmd+click for non-adjacent staves).
